About this listing
HIDDEN in the Redwoods of the Northern California Coast, just 6 miles from the Village of Mendocino, Big River Farm is a tranquil getaway just minutes from the Pacific Ocean, endless adventure, fine dining, and much more.
Big River Farm was once a Zen commune in the 60's. We have retained much of the flavor of that time. There are 4 dwellings on the property, strategically situated to have privacy from each other, but sharing the driveway, orchard & garden. The Zendo is a REDWOOD HOUSE nestled amongst the ferns and cherry trees, and can sleep 4 between its cozy BEDROOM w/ queensize bed and LIVING ROOM w/ kingsize pullout sleeper couch. There is a separate "bonus room" in the TOWER for yoga or quiet time. We added satellite wifi to the Zendo, so guests can check their email & surf the web. We have limited data, however, and streaming video or audio is not permitted.
LARGE KITCHEN is well-equipped for cooking and entertaining. A couple or individual could enjoy the spacious single bedroom house, or up to 4 guests can comfortably share an incredibly AFFORDABLE vacation house.
SURROUNDED by Big River State Forest land, Big River Farm is only 1 mile by hiking trails from the Big River, and hosts many enormous ANCIENT REDWOOD TREES.
Make sure to come in the summertime and fall too, when the BERRY BUSHES and ORCHARDS are bursting with ripe goodies!
Interaction with Guests
I have an art studio & cabin on the property, so I come and go as the creative urges (and garden watering) dictate. If you need help settling in, please let me know and I will arrange to greet you. I encourage people unfamiliar with woodstoves to let me know and I will give you a basic introduction. Please help yourselves to the herbs to the right of the garden gate & any fruit on the trees when they are in season.
We are surrounded on 3 sides by State Parks, so are really located "deep in the forest" while still having access to the paved road to town. We can walk down a trail to the river from the property, but it's very steep and most people enjoy going to the mouth of the river to Big River Beach and walking or biking up the Haul Road on the other side of the river. There are trail maps on the desk in the Zendo.
Unfortunately, there is no public transportation to the Zendo. Mendocino is 10 minutes away, mostly downhill so a car is a must, although we have had serious bicyclist visitors as well.
Other Things to Note
We now have unlimited internet so please enjoy! There is a house phone for those whose cell phones don't work well (AT&T, TMobile, Sprint). Verizon & USCellular work fine.
Please show respect to the house, the land, and the locals. Please enjoy yourself and your vacation, but keep the partying and noise within the immediate space of The Zendo at night, as the property is shared by other full-time renters.
Please help yourself to the fruit in the orchard and wild berries when ripe, but do not harvest in excess, leave some for others too. Feel free to enjoy the garden space, but do not harvest from beds or greenhouse as this is the fruit of others' labor. There are fresh herbs just inside the garden gate to the right. Please feel free to help yourselves!
Pets are allowed with a $25 pet fee. Please leave a check on the counter before you leave for the pet fee.
Check in is at 3pm and Check out is at 11am.
House was much bigger then I expected. It was very clean as well. It's about a ten minute drive him the town of Mendocino, but it is beautifully set in a private forest with redwoods surrounding your. Had a good experience, highly recommend it.
We very much enjoyed our stay at the Zendo. The accommodation was very comfortable, had everything we needed, and is in a splendid setting amongst the redwood trees. The surrounding area is magnificent and justifies more than just a few days, with plenty in the way of history, art, national parks etc. Debbie and Aaron were very friendly and attentive hosts, but without being intrusive. Special thanks is due to them for helping us out at the end of our stay.
I am reluctant to write a review because I would like to keep this hidden jewel a secret. I encourage anyone who is considering staying here to do so!!! It is a short drive to Mendocino and Fort Bragg and it nicely secluded.
I proposed to my girlfriend the night before we arrived so we spent our engagement weekend / Labor Day weekend here. Unbelievable. The cabin is perfect and has such great character. Debbie has included all of the amenities of home; plenty of dishes, cookware, DVDs, firewood. Debbie met us at the cabin with charcoal, half and half, and tea. Super accommodating!
There is one thing that I feel I must mention which I was not expecting. I went outside on our last night at the cabin, looked up, and could not believe how many stars were in the sky. Literally no blank space, all stars. No light pollution whatsoever. Coming from the city, this was a real treat. You can't pay or plan for the type of stuff which is one additional thing that makes this place great! I hope to come back again soon and spend a little extra time in the area.
Thank you Debbie and Zendo!
We loved the location of The Zendo, right in the middle of the redwoods and in close driving distance to Mendocino. Debbie showed us around and the few times we ran into Aaron, he was warm and friendly. We really enjoyed the quiet of the property and the home was comfy and private - and well equipped in the kitchen with appliances, silverware, glassware and plates.
The Zendo was rustic, yet clean and well-appointed. Debbie's directions were spot on and our dog loved the grounds and smells. The perfect get-away, yet less than 30 minutes from towns on the Mendocino coast. Well worth it and we hope to return.
We loved our stay at "The Zendo." It's the kind of experience that made me start using Airbnb. Beautiful, peaceful, and unique, it was great for our getaway to the Mendocino area. The location was wonderful, and the atmosphere both inside and out was just what we were hoping for. Debbie was a great host--proactive about making sure we had a great stay at her place. The extra fold-out bed was made ready for our arrival. That was really nice.
In addition to being beautifully rustic, "The Zendo" is also complete with all the amenities and comforts we could want for our stay.
The Zendo offers rustic charm, in a setting of peaceful solitude among the redwoods. The kitchen is well equipped, the house is spotless, the beds and furniture are wonderfully comfortable. High quality linens are provided; excellent wifi connection is available. Debbie sent excellent directions for reaching the Zendo, and helpful advice on area restaurants and attractions. Debbie welcomed us warmly when we arrived, & made us feel at home.
About the Host, Debbie
I am an architect & artist :) I have owned Big River Farm since 1984, guiding upgrades and renovations to the beautiful redwood cabins there. I gardened, raised my children, juiced apples, made cherry pies and now create art in my newly renovated studio, the Butsu. I am bringing back the Zen feeling that the original builders created by encouraging a peaceful and appreciative environment to flourish among those who come to spend some time there. We are now surrounded on 3 sides by Big River State Park so the redwood trees will always be with us, whispering in the wind.
