About This Listing
HIDDEN in the Redwoods of the Northern California Coast, just 6 miles from the Village of Mendocino, Big River Farm is a tranquil getaway just minutes from the Pacific Ocean, endless adventure, fine dining, and much more.
Big River Farm was once a Zen commune in the 60's. We have retained much of the flavor of that time. There are 4 dwellings on the property, strategically situated to have privacy from each other, but sharing the driveway, orchard & garden. The Zendo is a REDWOOD HOUSE nestled amongst the ferns and cherry trees, and can sleep 4 between its cozy BEDROOM w/ queensize bed and LIVING ROOM w/ kingsize pullout sleeper couch. There is a separate "bonus room" in the TOWER for yoga or quiet time. We added satellite wifi to the Zendo, so guests can check their email & surf the web. We have limited data, however, and streaming video or audio is not permitted.
LARGE KITCHEN is well-equipped for cooking and entertaining. A couple or individual could enjoy the spacious single bedroom house, or up to 4 guests can comfortably share an incredibly AFFORDABLE vacation house.
SURROUNDED by Big River State Forest land, Big River Farm is only 1 mile by hiking trails from the Big River, and hosts many enormous ANCIENT REDWOOD TREES.
Make sure to come in the summertime and fall too, when the BERRY BUSHES and ORCHARDS are bursting with ripe goodies!
Interaction with Guests
I have an art studio & cabin on the property, so I come and go as the creative urges (and garden watering) dictate. If you need help settling in, please let me know and I will arrange to greet you. I encourage people unfamiliar with woodstoves to let me know and I will give you a basic introduction. Please help yourselves to the herbs to the right of the garden gate & any fruit on the trees when they are in season.
We are surrounded on 3 sides by State Parks, so are really located "deep in the forest" while still having access to the paved road to town. We can walk down a trail to the river from the property, but it's very steep and most people enjoy going to the mouth of the river to Big River Beach and walking or biking up the Haul Road on the other side of the river. There are trail maps on the desk in the Zendo.
Unfortunately, there is no public transportation to the Zendo. Mendocino is 10 minutes away, mostly downhill so a car is a must, although we have had serious bicyclist visitors as well.
Other Things to Note
We now have unlimited internet so please enjoy! There is a house phone for those whose cell phones don't work well (AT&T, TMobile, Sprint). Verizon & USCellular work fine.
Please show respect to the house, the land, and the locals. Please enjoy yourself and your vacation, but keep the partying and noise within the immediate space of The Zendo at night, as the property is shared by other full-time renters.
Please help yourself to the fruit in the orchard and wild berries when ripe, but do not harvest in excess, leave some for others too. Feel free to enjoy the garden space, but do not harvest from beds or greenhouse as this is the fruit of others' labor. There are fresh herbs just inside the garden gate to the right. Please feel free to help yourselves!
Pets are allowed with a $25 pet fee. Please leave a check on the counter before you leave for the pet fee.
Check in is at 3pm and Check out is at 11am.
Staying at the Zendo was nothing short of transformational. Nestled quietly in the towering Redwoods, it feels like a place that exists without time. It was the perfect place for my sweetheart and me to get away and unwind together, with a well-stocked kitchen and plenty of space for prepping elaborate meals. Debbie was very communicative and a great host. It was a joy to visit, and I know we will be back.
Beautiful and secluded home amongst the redwoods, perfect for our first days outside the city in a while. Convenient to Mendocino, Ukiah, and all that lies between, with informative maps and guides to help us decide what to explore. Comfortable bed, very well-furnished kitchen and bathroom, and easy-to-use wood stove. Only glitches were spotty internet access (only worked our first day) and an intermittently-spotty left stereo speaker (which was otherwise offering excellent sound - maybe too good as we might have been playing music a bit loud at times). Would happily stay here again.
Glad you enjoyed the Zendo Ben! I didn't discover the internet glitch until we came to the property. Yes, satellite internet is not as reliable as cable and the technician is coming today to fix the problem. I will add a disclaimer about it to my description. Unfortunately cable is not available but mostly folks love to get away from it all under the redwoods so it's a trade-off I guess!
Staying at the Zendo was a wonderful experience all around. I was looking for a weekend retreat for a Bday celebration and this was just perfect in every way! Debbie was an excellent host providing all the necessary info and then some! She sent directions letting us know that Google maps might not be accurate and even recommended places nearby for dining! From the peacefulness of the Redwoods to the welcoming ambiance of the Zendo we just didn't want to leave! We will be back for more!
Debbie is a great hostess. She was very responsive to our questions and easy to work with. The cabin exceeded our expectations, which were a place to let down and soak up the woods. Would a wonderful private hideaway to recharge our batteries. I appreciated the fireplace stocked with wood and pre loaded with kindling and ready to light. Even my family who aren't as adventurous as I am were pleased with my choice.
We had a wonderful time at the Zendo. It's prettier than pictured, with striking internal features (floor to ceiling windows, great woodwork) and a great layout. It gives right out onto a walking trail that takes you all the way to the river. It's incredibly quiet -- you can hear a pin drop at night - while being just a short drive away from the Mendocino town center. Very nice experience, all around. I recommend it highly.
This is my second time at the Zendo, and I have thoroughly enjoyed both visits! Its a tranquil and quiet place for respite, and even more charming in person - the photos don't quite do it justice. To wake up surrounded by the giant trees in the comfort of this cabin is simply wonderful! Debbie is a gracious host.
The house was much better than we ever expected, it was a real treat to stay there for 4 nights. It was so secluded, quiet, breathtaking, clean, I could go on and on.
I will be back for sure :)
About the Host, Debbie
I am an architect & artist :) I have owned Big River Farm since 1984, guiding upgrades and renovations to the beautiful redwood cabins there. I gardened, raised my children, juiced apples, made cherry pies and now create art in my newly renovated studio, the Butsu. I am bringing back the Zen feeling that the original builders created by encouraging a peaceful and appreciative environment to flourish among those who come to spend some time there. We are now surrounded on 3 sides by Big River State Park so the redwood trees will always be with us, whispering in the wind.
