  • What a fun rustic experience!

Mark's retreat gives you the chance to spend some time relaxing and getting back to nature.

Plus, we'd never fed chickens before. they were beautiful!

  • The house and property was fantastic. Great place for earth-friendly relaxing. Outdoor showers, fire pit, hot tub and chickens to eat all your scraps. Near some great hiking trails and restaurants/bars. It's important to know that there is a caretaker living on the property in a trailer. She is very nice and accommodating, but if you are expecting to have the property to yourself that won't be the case and at times we felt slightly unwelcome as it felt as if we were disturbing her. There are also other smaller rentals on the property. The property did have a faint sewage smell at times, but it was not horrible and worth the trade off of using grey water.

    Response from Mark:

Thank you for your feedback. The funky smell was coming from the neighbors animals. We had a serious talk with them and it seems to have been resolved. Grey water should never smell, if it does something is off. That caretaker is gone now. It is of the utmost importance that each and every one of our guests feels completely welcome. We have a new caretaker with a background in hospitality to ensure every guest feels completely comfortable and at home.

  • I stayed here with 4 other friends during our Christmas holidays. The grounds are just as described. We had a lovely time and felt right at home. We put the kitchen to good use for various yummy meals, enjoyed the hot tub, were gifted some eggs from the chickens by Magda (the caretaker) and went for a nice hike at cozy dell trail nearby. Mark and Magda are quick to respond with any questions you may have.

  • Meiners Oaks Retreat is a charming and cozy compound very close to downtown Ojai. Every detail of the house, out-buildings, and outdoor spaces is crafted with playfulness and joy. Definitely a one-of-a-kind location. Oh, and the chickens out back are very nice.

    November 2013
  • This review is long overdue - we stayed at the Meiners Oaks Retreat in October 2013 and were very pleased with our experience overall. We had a total of 7 people staying in the house - 4 adults, 1 teenager, and 2 children under the age of 5 - and the house was comfortable and roomy enough for all of us. Although there is only one bathroom in the main house, there are others on the property (some with showers/tubs) that we were able to use. The kids loved exploring the property, playing with the cat, and watching the chickens. The outdoor billiard table was nice for entertainment (there was no TV in the house). The full kitchen was also very nice to have because we were able to buy our own food and save some money after the road trip down from Northern California. The neighborhood isn't the newest or the nicest, but although we were a little nervous about leaving our cars on the street, we didn't have any problems at all.

The only negative thing I have to say about our experience is that the older-model oven in the kitchen smelled heavily of propane, which flowed throughout the house. When I asked the groundskeeper about it (who's name I regretfully forget, but she was very nice and accommodating), she simply said that this was normal for an old oven.

Also to be noted, this house shares a gated property with two other rental units (the outdoor bathrooms are shared with these) and a couple trailers (one of which was occupied by the groundskeeper) - I can see how this can be a little undesirable depending on who else is renting at the same time, but the lady who was there with us that weekend was very nice.

If you're looking for a rustic getaway instead of the same ol' hotel experience (and price), this is your place!

  • I stayed at Meiners Oaks Retreat last weekend with a group of eight other friends in town for a wedding. We also booked the cabin on the property. The place could not have been more perfect for our stay: Super fun, quirky, and colorful, we felt we got a real taste of Ojai. We enjoyed the outdoor showers, hot tub, and chickens (!). I should also mention that the place is clean and well-cared for, and Mark and Magda were very responsive. If you are looking for a unique place for a group this is it!

  • Three of us came to the beautiful Meiners Oaks Retreat house for the weekend to getaway from Los Angeles and have a little writing retreat. The house and grounds were great for this, especially the wonderful, brightly lit kitchen and dining nook--where we spent a lot of time reading and writing. We also used the desk in the bedroom next to the kitchen. The rest of the house was great for sleeping, but a little dim for hanging out in for the day. We read outside under the trees with lights, and soaked in the hot tub one night. The place was also walking distance to some great restaurants and a lovely, lovely bookstore in a renovated church called Book Ends (110 S. Pueblo). It is also a close drive up into the hills, where we walked to the reservoir. The caretakers Dazz and Magda were sweet [and gracious when we disturbed Dazz late one night to help us cool down the hot tub -sorry!], and live on the property in trailers. The other two small cabins were full, but all-in-all a lovely and peaceful trip. We could have easily brought a few more people with us and we hope to come back again.

  • This place was totally delightful. A funky, artist vibe with an outdoor shower and tub, a community of tiny buildings on the site, and creative and beautiful gardens. We had a truly lovely time. Everything we needed in the kitchen was easy to find, the beds were incredibly comfy, and the property manager, Daz, was super friendly and welcoming. We would definitely stay there again if we're back in Ojai.

  • Magical, beautiful, great location, tons of sleep space, all your dreams come true. Dazzle rocks.

    July 2013
  • Where do I start to describe this magical Ojai getaway? When we entered the outdoor living space (sweetly decorated with chandeliers hanging from the trees) we were pleasantly greeted by Daz (the caretaker). Later that night we met and talked with Mark (the owner) and discovered we knew a lot of friends in common - oh the serendipity of community connections! This place is so charming and cozy and is even better than the pictures suggest. We really enjoyed the communal vibe, as well as the artistic touches all throughout the property. My favorite aspects were the outdoor showers and (email hidden)d of course, the adorable kitty and friendly chicken in the back! The beds were luxurious and comfortable too, we slept like babies and all of us felt right at home here. We'll definitely be back on our next trip to Ojai!
