Utilizing 1/5 of an acre with an Eco/Permaculture Design ethic, nestled in the desirable Meiners Oaks section of Ojai. This private gated property features a 3BR main house, 2 rental cabins, and beautiful gardens.

The Space

The Main House features 3 bedrooms and 5 beds: Bedroom 1 has a queen bed, Bedroom 2 has a queen bed, Bedroom 3 has 1 king bed and 1 twin bed. There is also a queen bed in the living room that can be used as a day bed or lounge area. Please see photos for details. The house has a full bathroom with shower and tub, and complete kitchen.

All of our cleaning supplies are eco friendly and natural, and our gardens are organic. We have premium beds and 100% cotton linens. We do our best to choose the healthiest and most sustainable option available. There is filtered drinking water in the kitchen.

Guest Access

Guests have shared access to wireless internet, hot tub, pool table, outdoor kitchen, 3 outdoor bathrooms, and 2 outdoor showers (1 has a claw foot bathtub!). There is ample street parking, bicycles, and library/video check out. Our chickens and gardens provide fresh eggs and produce when available.

Interaction with Guests

We have a caretaker on site who can help arrange bicycles or assist with other needs. Please let us know what time you plan on arriving so we can let you in and give you a tour of the property.

The Neighborhood

The property is 2.5 miles from downtown Ojai and close to hiking/mountain biking trails, local hot springs, and local wine tasting. We are walking distance to organic restaurants, yoga classes, Aikido lessons, and bars.

Getting around

Many things are within walking distance and we do have bikes for guests to borrow. The Ojai Trolley goes from Meiners Oaks to downtown Ojai.

Other Things to Note

Meiners Oaks Retreat does not allow pets. While pets are never allowed in the house, we keep chickens and one sweet kitty lives outdoors on the property. There are dogs, cats, chickens, horses, and other animals in our neighborhood.

We generally have a 2 night minimum, but exceptions can be made, so contact us with any questions.

See "Meiners Oaks Retreat" on the internet for more pics and info. Please note, all reservations must be booked through airbnb.

In an effort to make the place the best retreat possible, it is currently going through some renovations. There are some renovation materials still on site. We make every effort to work around bookings to keep the place as comfortable and quiet as possible for our guests.

Cabins also available for additional fee. Each Cabin sleeps 2 adults on 1 Queen bed. More info on cabins here:

  • Lovely neighborhood in Meiners Oak -- 5 min to central Ojai.

Very lovely and accommodating hosts - the house is pretty funky and has unique charm. We especially loved the chickens, friendly cat and outdoor shower. They also let us use their bikes for a quick spin to the Farmer + the Cook -- the best smoothies on the west coast!!!

The other little houses where other guests stayed were close enough to hear if they were outside but couldn't hear a peep otherwise, it felt private enough staying in the main house. It was really great for 6 friends!

  • It's been simply amazing.
The venue was unique and the house was perfectly set up to accommodate all of us. Hosts provided all what we could've needed (towels, sheets and canvases, a fully equiped kitchen... we didn't miss anything!). When me and my friends planned the trip, we couldn't even imagine how that place was going to help us to unwind and enjoy. The hot tub at the end of the day or the pool table for those lazy times are definitely the best.

I'm already convinced to go back someday as I honestly have no bad words for the place whose price, by the way, was also great even for such a big group as we were (8 people).

Thanks a lot Mark and Sara for giving this opportunity, hope to be back soon! Regards to the chickens and the cat, too :D

  • Four of us women in a local weaving class rented the Meiners Oaks house together for the week. When we arrived, some of us loved it and some of us were uncertain. It's a unique place. By the end of the week, everyone wanted to come back next year when the class returns to Ojai.

Mark was truly wonderful! He responded quickly, graciously, and generously to an abrupt change in our groups' circumstances, and he made it all work out for both sides. He and the caretaker were responsive to our needs and questions.

I would definitely return to the Meiners Oaks house for a stay. It was great for our needs.

  • Great house! Everything was clean and as described. The courtyard area with chandeliers hanging from the trees was the perfect spot to relax with a glass of wine at night after a long day of hiking or getting massages in Ojai. The Deer Lodge (just up the street) is a great place for dinner and later on, drinks and live music. A quick and easy drive into Ojai proper will get you into the farmers market, spas and all of the other things Ojai has to offer. We'd definitely stay here again.

  • What a fun rustic experience!

Mark's retreat gives you the chance to spend some time relaxing and getting back to nature.

Plus, we'd never fed chickens before. they were beautiful!

  • The house and property was fantastic. Great place for earth-friendly relaxing. Outdoor showers, fire pit, hot tub and chickens to eat all your scraps. Near some great hiking trails and restaurants/bars. It's important to know that there is a caretaker living on the property in a trailer. She is very nice and accommodating, but if you are expecting to have the property to yourself that won't be the case and at times we felt slightly unwelcome as it felt as if we were disturbing her. There are also other smaller rentals on the property. The property did have a faint sewage smell at times, but it was not horrible and worth the trade off of using grey water.

    Response from Mark:

Thank you for your feedback. The funky smell was coming from the neighbors animals. We had a serious talk with them and it seems to have been resolved. Grey water should never smell, if it does something is off. That caretaker is gone now. It is of the utmost importance that each and every one of our guests feels completely welcome. We have a new caretaker with a background in hospitality to ensure every guest feels completely comfortable and at home.

  • I stayed here with 4 other friends during our Christmas holidays. The grounds are just as described. We had a lovely time and felt right at home. We put the kitchen to good use for various yummy meals, enjoyed the hot tub, were gifted some eggs from the chickens by Magda (the caretaker) and went for a nice hike at cozy dell trail nearby. Mark and Magda are quick to respond with any questions you may have.

  • Meiners Oaks Retreat is a charming and cozy compound very close to downtown Ojai. Every detail of the house, out-buildings, and outdoor spaces is crafted with playfulness and joy. Definitely a one-of-a-kind location. Oh, and the chickens out back are very nice.

  • This review is long overdue - we stayed at the Meiners Oaks Retreat in October 2013 and were very pleased with our experience overall. We had a total of 7 people staying in the house - 4 adults, 1 teenager, and 2 children under the age of 5 - and the house was comfortable and roomy enough for all of us. Although there is only one bathroom in the main house, there are others on the property (some with showers/tubs) that we were able to use. The kids loved exploring the property, playing with the cat, and watching the chickens. The outdoor billiard table was nice for entertainment (there was no TV in the house). The full kitchen was also very nice to have because we were able to buy our own food and save some money after the road trip down from Northern California. The neighborhood isn't the newest or the nicest, but although we were a little nervous about leaving our cars on the street, we didn't have any problems at all.

The only negative thing I have to say about our experience is that the older-model oven in the kitchen smelled heavily of propane, which flowed throughout the house. When I asked the groundskeeper about it (who's name I regretfully forget, but she was very nice and accommodating), she simply said that this was normal for an old oven.

Also to be noted, this house shares a gated property with two other rental units (the outdoor bathrooms are shared with these) and a couple trailers (one of which was occupied by the groundskeeper) - I can see how this can be a little undesirable depending on who else is renting at the same time, but the lady who was there with us that weekend was very nice.

If you're looking for a rustic getaway instead of the same ol' hotel experience (and price), this is your place!

  • I stayed at Meiners Oaks Retreat last weekend with a group of eight other friends in town for a wedding. We also booked the cabin on the property. The place could not have been more perfect for our stay: Super fun, quirky, and colorful, we felt we got a real taste of Ojai. We enjoyed the outdoor showers, hot tub, and chickens (!). I should also mention that the place is clean and well-cared for, and Mark and Magda were very responsive. If you are looking for a unique place for a group this is it!
