The house is situated in the old residential area of Sliema and where the real people from Sliema live. Just 100m away from the sea, the promenade, the shops, the restaurants, the cafes and transport connections to the rest of Malta.
Just 100m outside the door you'll find the first of many bus stops and a number of taxis as well as the ferry boat which will take you directly into the heart of the capital city, Valletta!......Sliema is the touristic centre of our island and also the most popular walking area in Malta....everywhere is just a short walking distance away.
Please no smoking inside....there is a Roof-Top terrace where you can smoke....and enjoy the stars at the same time!
Our first impression of the house was great. The house has got four floors which gave us a lot of privacy. We loved the roofterrace (also easy for the laundry). The design of the house is very authentic. The location was close to the ferries, busstops and other facilities like supermarket and shops. It was a pity that there wasn't a beach near by, only a place were you can go into the water with stairs. When we had some questions we could always come in contact with Noel very easily.
Noel was very prompt at confirming our reservation and contacting me with details prior to our arrival. He collected us from the airport and took us to the house and showed us where things were. The house is more spacious than pictures suggested on Airbnb (I will try to upload some I took onto tripadvisor). The house could not have been better located for our purposes – local but busy vibe and close to everything - 2 minutes from the Valetta ferry. The kitchen was well stocked and it was enjoyable to cook there. On the ground floor are the kitchen and living room and a toilet. Upstairs is the twin bedroom and then there is the very narrow spiral staircase to the roof. In the basement there is a large dressing room, bedroom and en-suite. As an old house expect to bump your head on the doorways / fall down the stairs / fail to open the incredibly temperamental front door lock – but this is all part of the charm! I know Malta quite well which is why I wanted to stay in the area and I was not disappointed – plenty of restaurants and coffee shops and relatively easy to find a parking space. Cab prices were reasonable to everywhere too. However, in the interests of an honest review, I must concur with some of the previous comments in regards to the basic facilities and in particular, the damp issue in the basement bedroom. I appreciate that as a historic building a damp problem would be expensive to the treat; however the downstairs floor was so humid nothing dried there ever and the smell never went away. The bathroom would be soaked after use for the rest of the day. Due to the humidity the shower curtain and shower area had become mouldy – these are probably regularly cleaned / changed but so severe is the damp problem nothing will help the situation. If opened, the windows looked out onto a mouldy area under the road. There is a de-humidifier in the room but this is old, loud and the main effect is to blow hot air into the already boiling room. We moved the fan from the living room into the downstairs bedroom which made sleeping possible, though we ended up on the sofas a lot, but the room should at the very least have its own fan. Noel had offered us use of the air conditioning for 5 euro per day, however the unit was only in the kitchen where the temperature was fine, and would not have helped in the problem areas so we didn’t bother him over it. The roof terrace could be more inviting – there are outdoor seating pads for the floor and a table but nothing to make it a nice place to sit or shelter from the sun. This is probably due to the fear of pigeon mess which means everything has to be stored indoors when not in...
A personal pickup at the airport by our host and a mini tour of Sliema was very enjoyable and greatly appreciated. Arranging transportation back to the airport at 4:30 in the morning was a tremendous help.
The traditional townhouse lived up to it's billing. In the heart of a an old style residential neighbourhood you felt like part of the community. It certainly did not have a touristy feel. A minute's walk brought you to small local stores and pubs away from the usual tourist or trendy venues. You got to say hello to your neighbours who always returned the greeting.
The apartment was clean and spacious and had all the amenities needed to live in and make yourself at home. The open balcony on the second floor was great to keep in touch with the happenings on the street and the terrace on the roof gave interesting views across the roof tops of Sliema and down to the harbour. A great place to hang out and hang up the laundry.
For location the property can't be beat. Two minutes walk down to the Sliema waterfront with fantastics views across the harbour to Valetta. The ferry to Valetta, the bus terminal giving access to all points of the island, the hop on hop off buses and the various cruise boats were literally at the end of the street.
Trendy retaurants and all the shopping you need is an easy walking distance from the townhouse. The Bank of Valetta is right at the bottom of the street making it easy for currency exchanges. It was closed on Sunday's.
A couple of minutes up the hill and down the other side of the peninsula and there is the sea wall and promenade taking you to St Julian's and beyond. Lots of places for a good swim, and great places to sit, have a drink or a meal, take in the people and have some great views of the crystal clear waters of the Mediterranean.
We fell in love with Malta. The history, the people and the scenery are fantastic. From the bottom of our street is was easy to get to Valetta, The Three Cities, Mosta, Mdina, Marsaxlokk, Gozo and Comino. Our only regret is that there are places we did not have time to get to.
Best of all you were never far from some great tasting Gelato.
Everywhere we went, we felt safe and we felt welcomed by all the people we met. The townhouse location was a great blend of peace and quiet but close to all the action. We would definetly return to Malta and we would definetly book with our host again in this beautiful part of Sliema.
Noel greeted us as promised and we were shown around his beautiful town house in Sliema. My wife and I have been to Malta quite a few times but wanted our daughter to be able to show her boyfriend the bright lights and big city that Sliema has to offer. They weren't dissapointed of course and we were able to find a nice quiet bar to retire to. I really would recommend the Haze bar in Baluta as it overlooks the bay and the food is good. For a special evening meal I would also recommend Wigi also in Baluta, but you've got to book!
Excellent spacious property in a great location. Great for groups of friends travelling together. Excellent ambiance inside the house and amazing rooftop terrace.
Thank you Noel for the wonderful stay at your place. The house is great, elegant and cozy! For us the position was great and lots of restaurants in the vicinity. Excellent location also for the morning breakfast. Everything was there for the house to be used, linnen, towels, kitchen utensils. Excellent Welcome at the airport ! Great Time ! should I need it I will certainly come back to you!
