Most beautiful house downtown Cozumel
The space
Cozumel offers many options to its visitors, but nothing compared to this private residence already famous among the islanders for its façade, distinctive decoration and its main gate with mirrors that originated its popular name of “La Casa de los Espejos” or “The House of Mirrors”. Located downtown only 200 yards from the sea, it allows you to experience the way natives live, the real Mexican cuisine and the music and sounds that permeate the atmosphere every day and night.
The house was built in 1989 by Brazilian architect Douglas Cerqueira Gonçalves, who lived on the island for a few years and actually in the house while building it, having therefore the time to detail everything to a “state of the art” level. The property is just two small blocks away from the sea and from Punta Langosta, the main international pier in town and just three minute away from the town hall and the main square; also walking distance to the bars, restaurants, supermarkets and shopping strip.
The property consists of a beautiful tropical garden with pool and waterfall. It has two unique living spaces, a large two story house at the far end of the property and a totally independent bungalow in the pool area. Each of the three rooms has its own private bathroom and terrace, is fully air conditioned, has ceiling fans, TV/DVD/Sky TV, variety of pillows and high quality cotton linens. You can enjoy the large adjoining terrace to sunbath, morning coffee or afternoon Margaritas.
The garden and pool deserve a special mention, there’s no other garden in Cozumel that offers such a unique atmosphere; it is basically a palm garden with different palm trees, air plants, bromeliad, orchids and other unique plants that can’t be easily found elsewhere in town, combined with beautiful Mayan stone steles and various wood, stone and metal modern sculptures. There are also large trees that create shaded areas for private ambiances. The swimming pool is composed by two tanks, the large one with an extraordinary venetian tile sculpture representing the sacred Mayan serpent and a cascade that falls into the second tank where children or non swimmers can enjoy the fresh water. In case of need there’s also a wheel chair ramp.

Cozumel:
Cozumel is known worldwide for its crystal clear waters and rich underwater reefs and wildlife, but it also has superb white sand beaches and a unique ecosystem full of wetlands and lagoons where you can see a large number of protected species both endemic and migratory. The geographical position of the island together with its surface and underwater wealth couldn’t be ignored by the ancient astrologists and priests who chose it to erect the sanctuary to Ix-Chel, the most important female deity of the Mayan pantheon, goddess of the loom, the earth and fertility, making of Cozumel the most important pilgrimage destination for fifteen hundred years.
Cozumel has an heterogeneous and diverse community formed by the original locals and people from all over Mexico, the U.S., Canada, several European countries and also from Central and South America, all contributing with their own heritage and best efforts and resources to improve the tourist, human and cultural offer to place the island as one of the most attractive destinations in the Mexican Caribbean.
In 1956, Mexican film director René Cardona shot the movie Un Mundo Nuevo under the waters of Cozumel at what is now known as “Cardona Reef”. In 1957, the film was translated into English and broadcasted over the American television as A New World. Cardona’s movie is often confused with Jacque Yves Cousteau’s 1956 documentary Monde du Silence, but Cousteau’s film was shot entirely in the Eastern Hemisphere, therefore it was Cardona’s film that brought the crystal waters of Cozumel to the attention of the American divers. Cousteau did not visit the island until late 1960’s, years after Cozumel’s dive industry was well established. .
