The East Village
The East Village is famous as the birthplace of cultural and artistic movements in New York. Today, the neighborhood has many artistic attractions, perhaps more importantly some of the best value bars, restaurants and boutique shopping in Manhattan. The demographic is a mix of older Eastern Europeans, NYU students, actors, artists, musicians and young professionals.
There are 2 Subway stations within a 3-5 minute walk: Astor Place (4,5,6 trains) or 8th Street Station (N,Q,R trains) which serves all of New York. Alternatively, you can walk to the following areas: Greenwich Village in 15-20 minutes, Soho, Little Italy & Chinatown in 15 minutes, Union Square, Alphabet City & Lower East Side, in 10 minutes.
There are 2 Wholefood supermarkets within 10 minutes walk for all your high-quality groceries; however you will most likely use any of the half-dozen quality bodegas within a 3 minute walk. There is dry-cleaner directly across the road and Laundromat around the corner.

Martha was overseas during our stay, but she sent a lovely, helpful friend to check us in and out. She was available by phone should we need anything. The apt is clean, spacious and beautifully decorated. I would happily stay here again. It has everything you need to stock the fridge and cook your own breakfasts and dinners. Not that you really need to in such a great neighbourhood full of awesome restaurants, bars and cafes. The main bed is extremely comfortable and the shower is good too. I would highly recommend staying here, especially for one or two people. That said, there is plenty of room for 3 or 4, we just took turns taking the (less comfy) sofa bed for the night. Our flight out of NY was cancelled due to a snow storm, and Martha was fantastic - I was able to contact her via phone even though she was overseas, and she arranged for us to stay in the apartment until we were able to fly out a few days later. It really saved us from having to scramble to find last minute accommodation and lug our suitcases around in the snow to get there. Thank you Martha! We had a really great stay.

My husband and I recently spent two weeks at Martha's apartment in the East Village. The apartment was everything we expected, great location, spacious, clean and well equipped. We were warmly greeted by Martha's mother who assisted us with checking in and organised a limousine to return us to the airport at the end of our stay. We were celebrating our 40th wedding anniversary and Martha had left a bottle of champagne for us to enjoy, which was most appreciated. This was our first experience with airbnb and if our next experience is as good as our time at Martha's apartment then we will be very pleased. Thanks again Martha for allowing us to use your apartment.

Family and I stayed in Marthas place for 7 nights, we are regular visitors to NYC and really wanted to stay in this neighborhood .......we loved both the accommodation and the area, Martha was a lovely host.....makes her household rules clear from the start ...yet makes you very welcome.
The accommodation was spotless and aesthetically pleasing and it was nice to have a kitchen area as some evenings we stayed home and cooked and really enjoyed this too.Martha arranged for a car to pick us up and take us to the airport and made everything easy and stress free.....would stay again.
This Apartment is luxurious and the pleasing truth is, it is what it is described to be. Our past experience is that photo’s and descriptions often don’t portray reality, but rest assured this place is Class. We spent a wonderful month in Martha’s apartment and soaked up all that East Village has to offer. The apartment is extremely well appointed with quality furnishings and a superbly well equipped kitchen that makes it just so easy to cook your own meals as required. The apartment is both open and bright with a great outlook to East 7th Street . The three large windows give you the opportunity to soak up plenty of fresh air and the atmospherics of this bustling community. In the evening, we closed the windows and found the apartment extremely quiet, an obvious benefit of its location on the 5th floor.
On reflection, we found its location just "sensational" l for we were centre place to virtually hundreds of the finest eateries East Village had to offer and this provided us with easy access to soak up the atmosphere of this vibrant part of New York. A few minutes walk [yes only a few] is the Astor Place Subway Station from where you can travel just about anywhere you desire in New York. We used both the Subway and Metro buses with great ease from this East Village location.
Martha is a wonderful host who respects your space, is always on hand to assist if help is required and is rightly very proud of her Apartment in this wonderful location.

Nice, clean apartment in an excellent location. Bright and airy space. Only issue we had was that the internet did not work while we were there so we had to go to coffee shops to get connected. But Martha said she is going to get it fixed. A great option in the East Village.
Martha's place was just wonderful, immaculate, with everything you'd need. We loved the location , especially Abaco coffee across the street!
What a perfect apartment! Exactly what we were looking for in a more genuine NYC experience - quiet street in a bustling neighbourhood, with all New York's quintessential best on your doorstep. The East Village is definitely the place to be!
Martha was extremely helpful during both the lead up and during our stay. We had two couples sharing this apartment and there was enough room that we didn't feel on top of each other. Apartment was very clean, well maintained and a great oasis to escape to after a busy day in the city.
Couldn't have asked for a better NYC experience - would definitely stay there again without hesitation.
