About This Listing
CASA DE LA TREPADA is an ideally located, comfortable cottage - fully equipped in the middle of the surrounding rainforest - just 300 meters far away from the wonderful beaches of Punta Uva and the Caribe Sur.
La Casa de la Trepada is a great vacation getaway for couples, families and groups of friends. It’s a rustic, two bedroom, two bathrooms, two storey house, fully equipped kitchen, ceiling fans, telephone, possibility of internet and a wonderful beranda...
The cottage is situated 200 feet above beach level, enjoying refreshing breezes, and the gentle sound of the ocean. Innovatively and designed by the owners, the cottage is light and airy, featuring many architectural details and warmly decorated with Spanish tile tecnic called TRENCADIS. You will enjoy beautiful sunsets sitting in the beranda, which is an ideal place to take a rest, write a book or do just nothing.
Seven kilometers away is the nightlife of the buzzy little town of Puerto Viejo and 5 kilometers down at the end of the road, the colorful beach village of Manzanillo.
Two minutes walk down the hill from our front gate and you are surrounded by virgin rainforest. The beaches are a 3-4 minute walk downhill - or drive and park right next to the water at one of several spots where the sea is safe for swimming and snorkeling in the reefs just offshore. Monkeys, sloths, toucans and parrots are all regular visitors, and you will wake up each morning to the sounds of rainforest wildlife in all its glory!

This may be our favorite place to stay in the world so far. The home is beautiful and very well laid out. It's a perfect counterpoint to the very busy Puerto Viejo—quiet and a little secluded, and just minutes from Punta Uva, which was our favorite of the beaches we visited.
It's also very close to a national refuge and a national park, both of which are nothing short of amazing.
We hope to stay here again sometime. Spend a week here—or two!—you won't regret it.
My mother and I stayed at Casa de la Trepada for 4 nights and had a wonderful stay! The house is gorgeous, and it was amazing to wake up to the sounds of the jungle every morning. Mario & Do provided me with plenty of information prior to arrival, so we found the house easily. Puerto Viejo is a vibrant, fun, laid back little town - a great place to spend our evenings. And the beaches near the house are absolutely gorgeous and empty. I would highly recommend Case de la Trepada to anyone visiting the area (and the area is well worth a visit).
For anyone on the fence about whether or not to visit the Caribbean side of Costa Rica due to guidebook reviews portraying Puerto Viejo, etc. as a drug-filled orgy, ignore them. The community is a bright spot of how, with the right planning, ecotourism can work. Yes, you can find dope if that's your thing, but as parents of a two and seven year old, we had multiple spontaneous play dates with families across the globe in the mellow waves of Punta Uva.
Casa De Trepada was great for hanging out in during the warmer part of the day. Cool breezes are able to run through the house in the several outdoor, shading porches. Loved the unique trim, location away from traffic noise, and the huge tree that shaded the majority of the house. Jaunt up the hill was great exercise. For those wanting to rent bikes, take the advice posted on the frig and rent from Judy down the hill (sometimes hard to track down though). Instead of trudging bikes up the hill, she allows you to park them at her place.
Great place! Great town!
We loved staying in Punta Uva. The beaches in the area are beautiful and a little more private than those closer to Puerto Viejo.
The open air design is nice and allows for lots of patio space. I especially loved reading in the hammock.
Mario and Do were quick to respond and easy to communicate with upon booking. Xelo was available to give us keys and show us around upon our arrival.
I would definitely recommend this beautiful, isolated getaway.
Do was very helpful in helping us to find the place; she provided photos, a map and directions to the house. She connected us with Xelo who provided the key and some advice on how to get there and what to take. It was easy to find Xelo in Puerto Viejo to pick up of the keys for the house when we arrived.
The house was very cool. Lots of space to spread out and relax. It was safe, secure, clean, fully loaded with kitchen supplies and a washing machine. The design of the place is unique and lots of open air spaces (patio and kitchen). The bedrooms and bathrooms are well enclosed and secure so you can rest easy at night and not worry about insects or wildlife.
The wildlife around the house was fantastic. A sloth came right into the lower patio area and spent the morning hanging out with us there. Monkeys, birds, frogs, and insects were easy to spot everyday. We saw more there hanging out in the hammocks than when we hiked in the jungle because we could just lay around comfortably for hours and watch things go by.
The beach is not too far from the house, but still far enough that we felt it was a bit tough to just run back quickly to the house if we needed something. So we would just take the things we needed for the day and walk the endless beautiful beaches! The water was really rough because of the recent heavy rains. Daunting and sometimes dangerous. And there weren't many spots to lay on the sand because the water was so high.
We felt pretty isolated there, which is a positive for the most part because we wanted to escape crowds of people and be in the jungle with the wildlife. There were very few restaurants, stores, etc. nearby so you do have to be prepared to haul stuff to the house and find transportation to and from Puerto Viejo.
Bicycles are easy to rent just down the road from the house at the corner of the highway. Its a great place to cruise around on bikes! We found a taxi driver that lived just across the highway down the road to the beach. He drove us to town for a good price. We rented scooters in Manuel Antonio which were fun and good for exploring. We went to Manzanillo on the scooters and hiked down to the viewpoint.
We are very glad we stayed at La Casa and would highly recommend it. Thanks to Do, Mario and Xelo for being such great hosts. We will never forget our breakfast with the funny sloth!
