Other Things to Note
We look forward to hosting people from all over the world, but some information will insure that you will be fully happy with the accommodations.
No building that is over 160 years old in constant use is without quirks.
For instance, in exchange for a grand-fathered high water-pressure in the shower, you will notice the tub drains slowly. This is not due to the filter or a clogged drain; the plumbing was recently "snaked" three times by the same good plumber. The pipes are simply from before the 1920s, extremely narrow, below the tub, and, unfortunately, utterly unreachable for replacement. The ventilation fan next to the deck is noisy when it starts up. And every time I paint a patch, another patch or scuff mark shows up (although the entire premises are freshly painted now).
If something serious breaks, we will do our best to fix it or make it right. Smaller things (but not insignificant! we go through a check-list for every guest) -- a light bulb out, a door knob loose, a wobbly chair -- can either be fixed for a modest deduction from the deposit or will need to wait. Otherwise, the base rent would have to be raised significantly higher, affecting everyone who visits.
If you would like the high maintenance of a luxury hotel -- and there is absolutely nothing wrong with that -- this will not suit you.
But despite these "infelicities," you are getting a classic dwelling from a bygone era in a unique location and in awfully good shape. You will not find a better deal in Manhattan for this class and location of accommodations.
Lastly, because this is a not-for-profit enterprise, we are just barely covering our costs. As such, we may need to ask that your reservation-request fit the dates left without "unrentable" gaps (shorter than our 4-night minimum). This is a little awkward to explain, but if, for instance, only May 10 to 20 was unrented, and you wanted to rent 4 nights from May 13-17, we may not be able to accommodate because that leaves 6 nights unrentable, 3 nights before and after, and your 4-night fee will not even cover the base cost of the ten days, even before our other expenses.
There is no smoking whatsoever in the apartment, but you are welcome smoke out on the terrace provided you use and empty your ashtrays. The fireplaces are now decorative and originally designed for coal; they cannot be used.
We have recently had some problems with a guest who thought this was a hotel and he a rock-star. You are very welcome in my home, and I look forward to hosting you. You will be house-guests, not renters in a hotel or bed&breakfast. The space is a completely furnished apartment in a landmark building in a great location, and the accommodations will be offered to you cleaned and prepped. Just as house-guests, you should leave the premises in the same condition you enter them, except for the normal wear of the duration of your stay.
We provide fresh clean linens, two sets of keys, some kitchen staples, and, naturally, clean rooms and empty waste cans. During your stay, you will be responsible for your own linens (i.e., no service comes in during your stay to clean the linens or make the bed), food, key-handling, and garbage removal (again, no one will be coming in and emptying the trash during your stay--your privacy is maintained).
Conditions where the premises require more than regular laundry and cleaning -- examples being music CDs scattered on the floor through the apartment, garbage over-flowing in its containers or on the floor, covers of furniture removed, linens permanently stained -- will be remedied at your cost by an outside service who handles these problems for me and others locally. Please do not spoil your stay or my hosting by treating these choice accommodations at a fantastic location in a disrespectful manner. I would be very grateful for your cooperation. We are really not up-tight hosts; we're just still reeling from a pretty bad, recent incident.
Thanks a great deal, and we look very much forward to welcoming you in our home.
Scott’s apartment is lovely, very comfortable and in a very convenient location close to lots of excellent cafes, bars and restaurants with very good transport links.
Scott was an excellent host, welcoming, professional, flexible and considerate and he responded promptly to all of my enquiries. He also gave us a lot of recommendations for very nice places nearby.
When we plan a return visit to New York we would be very happy to stay at Scott’s again.
Me and my son had a great time in Scott's appartment and we highly recommand it to anyone looking for a characteristic place in a beautiful neighborhood. But not just for the appartment itself. Our contact with Scott was outstanding. His response was quick and he really made an effort to make our stay as pleasant and smooth as possible, giving us good advice and nice tips. Margaret was welcoming us in person, showing us around the place with the bed made and fresh roses. Although outside it was freezing, inside it was pleasantly warm. We felt genuinly welcome and at home. If we ever come back this is the place I would like to stay again.
It was really a pleasure to have Moniek and her charming son stay with us. Margaret was really taken with the duo and her girls loved the treats. Thank you, Moniek! We were very glad to welcome them and hope we may host them in the future. We would be glad to see them any time.
[Public & Shameless Plug: Moniek, perhaps join so many of your countrymen in Bali & come visit us at our new eco-resort; your son will love it!]
This brownstone was a fantastic place for my stay in New York. It felt very roomy and had a lot of character, plus a great location with so much in the neighborhood. It was nice to be on the ground floor and the deck was an extra lovely feature.
While I didn't get to meet Scott, he called to walk me through everything and made me very welcome, periodically checking in to make sure I had everything I needed.
Overall a top-notch place and host to stay!
Thank you, Jeffrey, for your review and stay. Jeffrey was a great guest and was really calm and easy to work with. I was on the West Coast welcoming another guest but found Jeffrey a real pleasure to host. The reservation came in the day before, so my colleague, who always covers for me and meets personally and orient guests, was away for the weekend and unable to re-schedule. But I hope we get a chance to have Jeffrey stay with us again in the future. I could not more highly recommend a guest.
I recently moved from NY to LA and this was my first trip back. My 'hood is the West Village so I knew this apartment was in a very prime location which drove my decision. You are near two major subway lines and within a 10 minute walk to 3 more lines. The apartment itself is absolutely charming. It's an old brownstone and has the feel of old NY inside. It was immaculate. The kitchen and bathroom are older but as I didn't cook a thing at home, no problem for me, although everything you would need seems to be there. The bathroom isn't updated, but the shower is hot and water pressure great. Again, everything was extremely clean. There is a restaurant under the apt and I heard some noise as they were closing around 10:30/11pm, but nothing disruptive, just a bit of noise. This is NY, there will be noise anywhere you go! Pre arrival communication and check in was super smooth. You can bet I'll be back at Scott's for my next visit home.
Thank you, Cathy. We were very glad to hosting you back at your old haunts. You were a great guest, and Margaret really enjoyed meeting you.
The brownstone is a landmark building, so updates are tricky. The kitchen faces outside, and as such, any renovations must be approved by the City. The building owner has been zero for three. And if we modernize the bathroom, we lose the grandfathered high water-pressure. NYC can be a challenge.
We look forward to welcoming you back soon.
Great location, charming apartment and very accommodating host.
My friend and I stayed in Scott's West Village apartment for five days, and it was a perfect experience. During that time we held a small reception for our New York friends, and everyone raved about the spaciousness, the well-appointed furnishings, and---of course---the deck! Upon our arrival we found bouquets of red roses placed tastefully throughout the apartment. Although we didn't get to meet Scott himself, his friend Margaret gave us a warm and thorough orientation to both the apartment and the neighborhood. In our one phone call to Scott (with a question about lighting the oven), he was very cordial and quite thorough in his instructions. I have stayed in about a dozen different Manhattan locations over the past few years, and this was the most quiet as well as having wonderful ambience. HIGHLY recommended!!!
This was our second time back to this lovely apartment this year. As before, the main attractions are the neighbourhood, the deck ( which in winter gives much needed light) and the generous proportions of the apartment itself. We really like this place; it's comfortable and spacious for sitting, dining, relaxing and sleeping. Though we didn't use the deck, given the temperatures outside, just opening the doors and having it there adds tremendously to the overall enjoyment of Scott's place. We had a regular visit from the neighbourhood squirrel each morning. Scott is a very attentive host and responded immediately to some issues we had with noise emanating from the radiators which were working overtime given the external conditions. One must expect and accept certain idiosyncrasies from an old house. We will return for sure summer or winter.
