I had a great experience at David's place, even if it was only for one night. The cottage loft itself is lovely, spacious and truly comes with everything you need. The fridge was well stocked, and the included breakfast was simply fantastic. The property itself is lovely and walking around was a pleasure. Overall, some of the best value I have found on airbnb. NB. The road to get there is a bit rough but a car can make it, just keep in mind that a taxi driver will certainly charge extra due to the condition of the road. Concerning the private beach, it is absolutely fantastic but it is 5km away (as David said) and usually requires a four wheel drive vehicle if you plan to drive there. Walking there is an option however, but this is no short walk.

We returned to Sussex after our previous excellent experience, and felt immediately at home in "our" cottage loft on this idyllic pimento plantation. It is so cool in the hills overlooking St Ann's Bay, and the views from our balcony are breathtaking. We love walking on the trails with the dogs, and exploring in the bush, cooling off in the pool, and snorkeling off the private beach (usually we are the only ones there!) We like to look after ourselves, and are up to a little bit of adventure off the beaten track! The road up can be alarming on the first visit, but we have always made it all the way up in our tiny Yaris rental car. Be sure to ask David for a rental car recommendation, you'll need a car to get around. Groceries are so easy to get from Ocho Rios about 20 minutes away, but the market at St Ann's Bay is even quicker. I love cooking with local products, the flavors are so different, and although I love to cook, we also love trying some of the great restaurants nearby, like Toscaninnis. The cricket is on in Kingston at the end of the month, and we are looking forward to using the new highway to get there, it should cut the trip down to about an hour! Our hosts and their staff are always welcoming, and make sure the fridge is stocked with fruit, juice and eggs all grown on site! We will return to Sussex, because it feels like home.

The host and the staff experience were polar opposite! David (host) was not at the property for the first 3 days, so our only interaction was via airbnb messages. Fine, except the friend who was "looking after the property" was absolutely clueless about the listing. We were then made to feel embarrassed when asking why the satellite tv wasn't working (only one channel worked - fox news type channel) "you're not in America anymore" was his response to us (we're not from America). When we finally met David, our encounter was incredible awkward and unfriendly. This said, the staff was incredible!! All very kind and helpful. They even went out of their way to accommodate my diet and help us get set up. This listing is wonderful in person, but also we found it misleading. You MUST have a car if you stay here!! Or get ready to spend a fortune on taxis. We made a big mistake thinking taxis would be affordable (we had spent 6 days in Negril prior with the greatest taxi driver). The road leading up to the property is ridiculous at one point, like driving a dried river bed and we thought our driver was lost. 4x4 highly recommended, or be gentle if you have rental - no joke. The 5 km private white sand beach is NOT walkable, and when I checked maps it is 15 mins drive (90 mins walk). We felt trapped on a gorgeous property. The 3 dogs were friendly, but when we tried to leave the cottage at night, we were met with aggressive barking and them showing their teeth. I am an animal person, so I could see this was all bark and no bite, but my partner is more nervous around dogs and was again uncomfortable and felt trapped. The cottage itself is lovely, the staff were beyond amazing and kind. I would just recommend being more prepared than us (car, groceries, and/or be rich). Despite losing our paid last day, we still felt we would be better of staying elsewhere and left a day early.

David was a phenomenal host from before we arrived until after we left. The cottage is a beautiful, lofty space, which is located on the second floor of David's office and has all of the amenities you need (fans, shampoos/conditioners, silverware, dinnerware, coffee maker, oven, etc.), not to mention freshly squeezed juice, fruit, and muffins each morning. There is no air conditioning, but the loft is very spacious and there are ceiling/floor fans you can use to keep cool. We had a wonderful time lounging at the private pool, which was exactly the right temperature. Please note that there are roosters/chickens/turkeys on the property, which we enjoyed and added to the authenticity of the plantation. David was extremely kind and professional. He was so kind to go out of his way to contact his sister-in-law so we could have lunch at the Goldeneye. And, get this, my boyfriend and I forgot at our passports in the nightstand drawer and didn't realize it until we were at the airport to fly home. David went above and beyond to help us and had his driver drop off our passports at the airport. Now that is amazing. Overall, we had a wonderful experience at David's and would go back in a heartbeat. Can't wait for our next stay!
