About This Listing
Located in the ex bell tower of a XIII century nunnery, completely and recently remodeled, the 2 bedroom apartment offers luxurious accommodations in the centre of the 2500 year old Umbrian village of Spello, that shows many evidences of its glorious past (roman and medieval archs, mosaics, churches and walls).
The whole apartment is very luminous and suggestive, but especially particular is its terrace located on the top of the bell tower, with a fantastic view on the countryside and, in the distance, the cities of Spoleto, Montefalco and Trevi.
There are 2 bedrooms, both of them with a master king size bed with cotton sheets. There is a fireplace, a newly remodeled kitchen and a modern bathroom with shower.
The apartment opens up to a private courtyard full of flowers in the middle of the nunnery (which is not inhabited except by the landlord's family.)
The quiet village of Spello offers relaxing walks through the nature and excellent restaurants.
There is a medieval walking/ bicycling trail to Assisi and a beautiful trail along the roman aqueduct which leads up to a tiny town in the mountains called Collepino.
During springtime Spello's visitors can pick up wild asparagus, herbs and mushrooms to fix delicious regional dishes or meet the inhabitants while collecting the flowers to use for the famous "Infiorata". That is the most important event every year during the weekend of the Corpus Domini, in which the people from Spello are all involved in creating beautiful flower-carpets all along the streets of the town (search key words: infiorate, spello).
For all the other many cultural, religious, gastro-oenologic, fun and free time opportunities and happenings at Spello throughout the year, search key words: spello, comune.
And if all this is not enough for you yet, or if you just look out for a place to relax and once do nothing, you might just stay in and "rent an italian mamma" to cook for you or teach you whatever you especially prefer of the italian kitchen.
The landlord's family will organize all this for you.
DURING THE WEEK BEFORE THE INFIORATA FESTIVAL WE RENT THE APARTMENT ONLY FOR A MINIMUM OF A WHOLE WEEK!!!
Our guests have access to the courtyard and the sitting possibilities they find outside. The washing mashine is in common, so of course you can use the little laundry room and the washing horse.
Moreover, we have a ping pong table in the basement and on request you can play there, too.
Interaction with Guests
Since we're living also in the Nunnery, we're always available for our guests. You will be given local assistance, if you wish so, for whatever question or doubt might come to your mind: from suggestions for day trips, best local restaurants or also regarding particular souvenirs to take home.
Already Spello itself is a jewel, conserving its history in every corner of the town. Moreover, during the whole year there's lots of special events going on, such as the Infiorata Festival at the weekend of Corpus Domini where all the streets get covered by unique and beautiful flower carpets. In august is taking place the roman festival featuring the town and its roman past with gladiator games and dinner banquets of ancient times. At about the same period "Incontri per le strade" is a cultural highlight with music and theatre events same as expositions of paintings and sculptures. The feast of the oil is celebrating the olive harvest in novembre, while in winter the people from Spello open up their houses to visitors, showing them beautiful and individual creations of the crip.
Since Spello is in the neighbourhood of Assisi, Trevi, Spoleto, Bevagna and Montefalco, there's certainly always a full programm garanteed for our guests.
Other Things to Note
Like to try Umbria's wine or be introduced to the secrets of local kitchen? Want to discover Spello and surroundings in bicycle or participate at the Infiorata Festival? This is a new service we are offering to our guests. Kitchen classes or visits at some of Umbria's most particular wineries, a truffle hunt up on the mountains or bike tours in a group or by yourself - our local assistant will organize everything for you.
If then you want an "italian mamma" to come over to your house and cook for you, this will just make your holidays an unforgettable trip...
Actually, there's no hard house rules to obey coming to the apartment:
We always recommend to our guests to make sure the front door that leads from the street to the courtyard is shut, so that no stranger can get into the house.
The apartment itself is a NON smoking area, and we'd like you to always shut the shutters when you're going out. In Spello strong winds can come up from one minute to the other and to make sure nobody gets insured in the rare case they should bang and fall down on the street below, we always recommend this.
From Jun 1 - 14, 2015 the minimum stay is 7 nights.
everything was absolutely amazing.
Spello, the apartment, the hosts- just perfect!
will hope to come back
We stayed at the Spello Nunnery apartment for one week mid-July. It's a beautiful flat with all the amenities you would like. It has fantastic views over the hills of Umbria and the rooftops of Spello. Spello itself is a very quaint town with lots of Italian charm, great restaurants and friendly people. We very much enjoyed our stay with Anja and Paolo. They are incredibly helpful and friendly hosts and always available for questions. The apartment has a lovely roof terrace, which unfortunately we weren't able to use much because it was just too warm the time of year we went. We loved everything about the flat. The only one thing I would note is that there is no air-conditioning, but the windows do all have nets so the mosquitoes stay out when you open the windows. All around a great place for a relaxing week in Umbria.
Dear Rianne and George,
thank you very much for the comment you left on airbnb about us, the apartment and Spello!
See, we both wrote about each other that comunication functioned well, and now had to find out that still it wasn't perfect: As we advertised on airbnb, we do have airconditioning! It's just that it's a mobile one, which we didn't put into the house from the beginning, since now and then it was raining and not that continiously hot this summer and during your stay! So we didn't immagine you wanted it and you didn't ask for it!
We're thinking of installing a fixed airconditiong next year, but since this needs an output visible on the outside, we'd need an authorization of the Comunity we still don't have.
Sorry for how this was going, we hope you had a nice day in Rome and will come back one day!
Anja and Paolo
Oh, what a lovely week we spent in Spello at the Nunnery Apartment this spring. Anja and Paolo are kind, generous hosts and the apartment could not have been more perfect for the two of us: quiet, commodious and spotlessly clean.
The main bedroom is delicious, light and airy with a very comfortable mattress and lovely bed linens. It looks out to the courtyard of the abbey which Anja and Paolo have planted beautifully. The second bedroom has an incredible view out to the surrounding countryside. The bath and kitchen are modern and well-appointed and the heating system is super-efficient. The kitchen is equipped with everything one needs to fix and enjoy a simple meal as well as some basics like salt, pepper, oil and vinegar which were very much appreciated. But first, foremost and above all, it is the roof terrace which made the Nunnery our favorite vacation apartment of all time.
High above the rooftops and chimney-pots, we spent countless hours watching the shifting shadows on the surrounding fields and hills. The views are spectacular and, from this glorious perch, one can see each of the celebrated hill towns of the Via Flaminia: Trevi, Montefalco and Spoleto. Beware of the tranquility of your little aerie; it can seduce you away from the serious business of being a tourist and leave you contented simply to watch the soaring swallows all afternoon.
I would strongly recommend this apartment to anyone who wishes to experience the delights of Spello and l'anima verde d'Italia.
Dear Carol and James,
thank you so much for this beautiful review! I think, it is the most complete we've ever received, and without considering that you're writing about my place, every line tells me that you had a fantastic, relaxing and appreciating week in Umbria.
And that is a compliment I made to this place on earth, choosing my home here, but you were able to put it in those most beautiful words.
I wish to you that you can live on those new memories for a long time, and whenever you come back to Italy and in this region, please stop by for a Hello!
A big hug
from Anja and the boys
I can’t emphasize enough how great Anja and Paulo are, and the Spello Nunnery apartment. We were “high maintenance” guests… asking for much assistance ahead of time, including help purchasing tickets to a soccer game, answering questions and getting restaurant reservations. They were extremely helpful and very welcoming. Spello is a small, fun community to stay in for some time, to just explore every street and get lost in. There are great restaurants nearby, and the apartment is a great spot to stay and discover Spello. The views from the top are stunning. It was a shame for us that our weather wasn’t better so we could enjoy more but such is April. A few things to note for guests that I wondered ahead of time: They have a hair dryer! The master bedroom has essentially blackout shades so it can be very dark if you would like it to, or lighter if you would prefer. The kitchen has some basics like salt, pepper, olive oil, a coffee press, pots and pans, etc., much of what we needed for breakfasts and to cook dinner at night. They have two sweet cats, that along with Anja, Paolo and the kids, become like family, very hard to leave. We would return to the Spello Nunnery in a heartbeat. This was my first Airbnb experience and I am excited to try it again.
very welcoming and a great view from the top of the nunnery, we were there for easter and although Paolo and Anya were very busy with family they still found time to ask us to join them for coffee- and let us try out our bad italian. Many thanks Richard and Liz
What great hosts Paolo and Anja were .
Our time at their place was magical. The nunnery apartment is extremely clean, airy ,very well equipped and charming. The kitchen window's view
alone is a postcard itself.
The bell tower deck with 360 degree Umbrian vistas were our favorite spot.
Starting from our first meeting them,Paolo helping us with our big suitcase up to all the steps, their suggestions of places ,to see and eat ,their Father's Olive oil shop, kids Giulio and Pietro, gave us memories we will never forget.
"il Buchetto " the restuarant they recommended was incredible.
Hoping to visit them soon again
The best place on our trip, best hosts we met.
About the Host, Paolo
The Spello Nunnery Appartment is run by me, Paolo, and my wife Anja. Anja is from Germany but came to Italy for her law-studies, and that's where we met. I am a lawyer in the meantime while Anja is working as a translater and looking after our little sons, Giulio and Pietro.
Together we live in the Nunnery which is an old convent from 1200 right in the middle of the historic Centre of Spello where I've lived with my family ever since. While the Nunnery Appartment is set up in the old bell-tower, we are living downstairs. There's indipendent entrances of the homes shared by our private courtyard on the inside of the building.
So if our guests want to get for example further informations about Spello, Umbria or also about the italian-lifestyle or just need to get in contact for anything else, it's possible to just meet us outside or knock on the door. With the guests we had until this day, we often exchanged experiences and points of view. We love to get to know things about different cultures and styles of living, also because we're travelling, now that the boys are small, more in our mind than for real.
Personally we love to do sports and enjoy everything Spello is offering such as the possibility to go on long walks on the Mount Subasio Spello is next to, or going on Mountain-bike or run, or also participate at the different events throughout the year as there is the Infiorata-Flower Festival, the roman Festival, Incontri per le Strade, the Festa of the new olive-oil and the tour of expositions of Christmas Cribs.
