Spello Nunnery Apartment

Apartment - Entire home/apt · Via Giulia, Spello, Umbria 06038, Italy

The Space

Located in the ex bell tower of a XIII century nunnery, completely and recently remodeled, the 2 bedroom apartment offers luxurious accommodations in the centre of the 2500 year old Umbrian village of Spello, that shows many evidences of its glorious past (roman and medieval archs, mosaics, churches and walls).
The whole apartment is very luminous and suggestive, but especially particular is its terrace located on the top of the bell tower, with a fantastic view on the countryside and, in the distance, the cities of Spoleto, Montefalco and Trevi.
There are 2 bedrooms, both of them with a master king size bed with cotton sheets. There is a fireplace, a newly remodeled kitchen and a modern bathroom with shower.
The apartment opens up to a private courtyard full of flowers in the middle of the nunnery (which is not inhabited except by the landlord's family.)
The quiet village of Spello offers relaxing walks through the nature and excellent restaurants.
There is a medieval walking/ bicycling trail to Assisi and a beautiful trail along the roman aqueduct which leads up to a tiny town in the mountains called Collepino.
During springtime Spello's visitors can pick up wild asparagus, herbs and mushrooms to fix delicious regional dishes or meet the inhabitants while collecting the flowers to use for the famous "Infiorata". That is the most important event every year during the weekend of the Corpus Domini, in which the people from Spello are all involved in creating beautiful flower-carpets all along the streets of the town (search key words: infiorate, spello).
For all the other many cultural, religious, gastro-oenologic, fun and free time opportunities and happenings at Spello throughout the year, search key words: spello, comune.
And if all this is not enough for you yet, or if you just look out for a place to relax and once do nothing, you might just stay in and "rent an italian mamma" to cook for you or teach you whatever you especially prefer of the italian kitchen.
The landlord's family will organize all this for you.

Guest Access

Our guests have access to the courtyard and the sitting possibilities they find outside. The washing mashine is in common, so of course you can use the little laundry room and the washing horse.
Moreover, we have a ping pong table in the basement and on request you can play there, too.

Interaction with Guests

Since we're living also in the Nunnery, we're always available for our guests. You will be given local assistance, if you wish so, for whatever question or doubt might come to your mind: from suggestions for day trips, best local restaurants or also regarding particular souvenirs to take home.

The Neighborhood

Already Spello itself is a jewel, conserving its history in every corner of the town. Moreover, during the whole year there's lots of special events going on, such as the Infiorata Festival at the weekend of Corpus Domini where all the streets get covered by unique and beautiful flower carpets. In august is taking place the roman festival featuring the town and its roman past with gladiator games and dinner banquets of ancient times. At about the same period "Incontri per le strade" is a cultural highlight with music and theatre events same as expositions of paintings and sculptures. The feast of the oil is celebrating the olive harvest in novembre, while in winter the people from Spello open up their houses to visitors, showing them beautiful and individual creations of the crip.
Since Spello is in the neighbourhood of Assisi, Trevi, Spoleto, Bevagna and Montefalco, there's certainly always a full programm garanteed for our guests.

Other Things to Note

Like to try Umbria's wine or be introduced to the secrets of local kitchen? Want to discover Spello and surroundings in bicycle or participate at the Infiorata Festival? This is a new service we are offering to our guests. Kitchen classes or visits at some of Umbria's most particular wineries, a truffle hunt up on the mountains or bike tours in a group or by yourself - our local assistant will organize everything for you.
If then you want an "italian mamma" to come over to your house and cook for you, this will just make your holidays an unforgettable trip...

  • Spello Nunnery apartment was a real gem. The location was on a quiet street but well located for easy access to everything in town. Views from the terrace were spectacular! Anja and Paolo were wonderful hosts. They were there to greet us when we arrived and to help with luggage and parking. They were also there to assist when we left.
Any questions we had about the area were answered promptly. They gave us great suggestions for restaurants, walks and festivals in the area. We are planning a return visit to Spello Nunnery next year.

  • My husband ans I are travelling around Italy with another couple for 3 weeks. We wanted to visit a small town and get a taste of Italian life that was less touristy than the well known places. We were very lucky to have chosen Spello and extremely pleased to have booked the Spello Nunnery, with fantastic hosts, Paaolo and Anja. From our arrival they were very welcoming and nothing was too much trouble. They gave us lots of information about the town, the surrounding areas and places to eat. They organised bike hire for us, told us about walks and often sent us directions by email about how to get places after talking with us. The apartment was perfect. The 2 bedrooms were a good size, kitchen very adequate and well equipped and it was all very clean. The best feature, however, was the wonderful rooftop terrace which became our rooftop bar every evening for drinks before going out for dinner. The views over the Umbrian countryside are unforgettable. We had an unforgettable stay for 5 days and were sad to leave such a beautiful place and such warm people. We feel like we became part of their family and will certainly return if we get the chance again one day. I would certainly recommend Spello and the Spello Nunnery to anyone who would like a taste of real Italian life and the chance to meet wonderful people.

  • We spent 8 nights in the lovely, clean apartment. Anya and Paolo were wonderful hosts, and had several great recommendations for us, e.g. cities to visit, restaurants to eat at, and hikes to take. Anya is originally from Berlin, and spent a year in Grants Pass, Oregon. So her English is perfect.

Spello is a great alternative to the bigger and more touristy Umbrian cities of Assisi and Perugia. We particularly enjoyed our visits to Montefalco, Bevagna, Spoleto, and Gubbio.

My husband likes to hike, and there are several lovely hikes from Spello, e.g. the easy/scenic hike along the ancient Roman aqueduct. At the end of the aqueduct trail, there is another trail (steeper) up to city of Collepino, a lovely little town with a great view of the valley below, and with a small cafe to grab an espresso before heading back down to Spello. It is also possible to hike to Assisi, following paths of any difficulty that you would like. You can then take the train back to Spello.

My husband and I have been coming to Italy, once or twice a year, for several years now, and almost always rent apartments in the small hill towns, like Spello. We typically have breakfast and dinner in the apartment. During the day, we travel around stopping in one of the small towns for lunch. The Nunnery apartment fit our needs perfectly.

Watching the sunrise from the terrace was quite spectacular on several mornings.

  • Spello is a magical place and staying at Paolo's and Anya's just completes the experience. The apartment is comfortable, spacious and as pictured, with own compact but private terrace and breathless views from some of the windows. There can be occasional noise on weekends from street on weekends or from courtyard (if you keep windows open) but in no way did this affect the quality of our stay. It also distinguishes airbnb from hotel stays: one experiences local life and rhythms. The hosts are amazingly helpful and caring! I would recommend this lovely place without hesitation and would happily return.

  • The Nunnery in Spello is a very special little place, we loved the roof top terrace with fabulous views across the Umbrian countryside, perfect for a pre dinner cocktail. Paolo and his wife were very friendly and helpful, giving us good advice on restaurant selections. There are lots of nice restaurants within easy walking distance. A hidden gem.

  • We have just spent 3 months in the Nunnery Apartment in Spello. Spello was a perfect base for touring Umbria and the Nunnery Apartment was a perfect place to stay. The apartment is spacious, spotlessly clean and modern with all of the facilities we could have wanted - a kitchen area to try out our new Umbrian recipes and to entertain friends, a comfortable living space, large bedrooms, a modern shower room and - to top it all - a rooftop terrace with spectacular views. We could not have been happier with our location. The host family were so helpful, with tips on things to do and places to see. We enthusiastically embraced the Italian life, picking petals for the Infiorata festival and making friends in the town. It was hard to leave but it will not be difficult to return. We have left a little piece of our hearts in Spello!

  • This is a really special apartment owned by a lovely family in a gorgeous Umbrian town. Paolo and his wife Anja were so helpful and friendly. They helped us arrange a very special celebration for my sisters 50th birthday in a lovely local restaurant. It is easy to visit Assisi and other Umbrain towns from here and there a far fewer tourists in Spello. Amazing views from the rooftop balcony and from each room. Apartment was spotlessly clean. Thank you Paolo and Anja!

  • We were very pleased with the appartment and its perfect location right in the middle of the historical centre of Spello. We spend 5 nights here and enjoyed Spello but also the national parks in the area to go hiking. Paolo and his wife were very helpfull with tips on restaurants and places to visit.

  • We had a wonderful time in Spello! Great apartment, loved the roof-top terrace and used to read up there in the evenings and had wine and cheese the nights we decided not to go out. Great restaurant recommendations by Anja who was just so wonderful and helpful and Paolo is a true gentleman. What a wonderful family! We hired bikes and also did a walk to Assisi and back. We found a pool one day as it was really hot - August is hot in Umbria! Read lots and relaxed a lot. Highly recommend this experience. Very accessible from Rome also! Thank you so much Anja and Paolo ;)

The Spello Nunnery Appartment is run by me, Paolo, and my wife Anja. Anja is from Germany but came to Italy for her law-studies, and that's where we met. I am a lawyer in the meantime while Anja is working as a translater and looking after our little sons, Giulio and Pietro. Together we live in the Nunnery which is an old convent from 1200 right in the middle of the historic Centre of Spello where I've lived with my family ever since. While the Nunnery Appartment is set up in the old bell-tower, we are living downstairs. There's indipendent entrances of the homes shared by our private courtyard on the inside of the building. So if our guests want to get for example further informations about Spello, Umbria or also about the italian-lifestyle or just need to get in contact for anything else, it's possible to just meet us outside or knock on the door. With the guests we had until this day, we often exchanged experiences and points of view. We love to get to know things about different cultures and styles of living, also because we're travelling, now that the boys are small, more in our mind than for real. Personally we love to do sports and enjoy everything Spello is offering such as the possibility to go on long walks on the Mount Subasio Spello is next to, or going on Mountain-bike or run, or also participate at the different events throughout the year as there is the Infiorata-Flower Festival, the roman Festival, Incontri per le Strade, the Festa of the new olive-oil and the tour of expositions of Christmas Cribs.
