I only met Peter when I checked out but he has been great in communicating throughout the booking process and my stay there. The flat is in a great location (Central station, shops, UTS, Sydney Harbour, Darling Harbour, and parks are all within walking distance) and it is good value for money. The flat is small (good for a maximum of two people who are close, I’d say) but it has all the facilities you need for cooking etc. (except an oven). The wifi was very fast and reliable and allowed me to (website hidden) home with video every day without any problems! A few points for feedback that influenced my stay and my review:
My first few days were a bit bumpy as there had been a scheduling mistake and I was asked to stay in a different room (in the same building) for the first night and relocate for the remainder of my stay. I had to leave the first room at 10.00 but could only check into the second one later during the day, so it was suggested I left my key and luggage at the coffee shop downstairs. There they did not seem to know about any such arrangement and were not keen on me leaving my luggage, and were unable to put it somewhere behind the counter. I ended up leaving it in a corner outside in sight of the counter which really did not feel safe to me. Fortunately it worked out and my suitcase had been carried to the new room for me when I came back.
The flat was not the cleanest. It was very dusty and there were used tissues under the bed. Although the bed had been made and clean towels were provided, it looked like the clean-up after check-out of the previous guests had been a rushed job as there was a dirty cleaning towel in a bunch on the kitchen counter. The bathroom looks a bit dilapidated.
The bed was very hard which I managed to solve by using the extra duvets provided as extra padding. There were DVDs provided but no DVD player. And, as other guests have said as well, laundry machines were coin-operated instead of free, but after asking Peter he transferred some money for laundry via PayPal.
There were construction works going on in the building (which is of course out of control of the host) which meant that on weekday for at least half of the 3 weeks I was there workers would start drilling into walls at 7.00 AM, which was very loud! They were also installing a new fire alarm system so on one day I had to leave the door open so that the workers could get into the flat – this didn’t feel safe to me either!
So all in all, a small but sufficient flat in a convenient location but you can’t be too picky about cleanliness.
We had a great stay in Peter's flat. The location is very practical to visit Sydney. The flat is small but confortable. We recommend this adress for a couple.
Perfect zone and apartament! And thank you for your fast and easy communication!
We had a wonderful experience in Sydney!
Great location and very comfortable
Our stay didnt start that well due to a miscommunication of sorts and we ended up waiting outside for 2 hours before someone came to let us in to the apartment. But after that our stay was pretty much perfect. The place is very small but perfectly doable and everything is provided as per the description. The kitchen is well equipped and there is free (fast) wifi and cable tv. The bathroom was a bit run down but perfectly fine and Peter was excellent at getting back to me about any issues. If you want to do your laundry just let peter know and he will send you money via PayPal so you can do your laundry for free!
thanks so much for a great stay!
Great location! Nothing too fancy, but everything was as it should be.
Peter was wonderful to deal with, his responses very quick. Check in process was very easy. The flat was clean and is in a great location. I would definitely stay in the area again. However, During the second day of vacation, while my mum was napping, a woman unlocked the unit door with another person behind her holding luggage. I think there may have been a mix up with the room bookings as she seemed very confused as to why we were there. It made us quite uneasy for the rest of the trip, particularly because there was no latch or lock on the inside of the door for security. Having said this, Surry Hills is a great location with wonderful restaurants and coffee shops all around :) I do think the double-booking of the room was a rare mistake, and hopefully will not happen again. Thank you Peter for your prompt replies and for a clean unit in an amazing location!
This place was amazing! The location was perfect and the apt was clean. What struck me first was how perfectly the bed was made. I felt as though Peter took the time to make sure my stay was comfortable. I would highly recommend this flat! It is walking distance to absolutely everything.
Overall, this flat was an adequate place to sleep, but not suitable for a comfortable extended stay (23 days in my case). Extremely noisy renovations (jackhammered tile floors, drilling, & wall demolition) on adjacent flats/shared walls that began at 7am (6:30am on one Saturday) & building water shut off without notice were large annoyances, but Peter could not have foreseen those problems. For any potential tenants: these issues should resolve themselves when renovations are completed. I hope your stay is quieter than mine.
The listing advertises a kitchen, but there is no oven and two plug-in electric range/burners. For such a long stay, I expected to cook my own meals. Peter had another flat with an oven listed (on this website) as available after a certain date, but when I inquired about changing flats, Peter said he had a long-term tenant there. He offered to reimburse me for an electric (toaster) oven, but I could not find one in the stores he recommended.
The hot water in the shower lasts for 3min and 30-45 seconds, with an extra 30-40 seconds of warm water, if you completely shut off the cold. It was like clockwork, regardless of the time of day I showered, so take quick ones!
Many lights didn't work (1 out of 3 bulbs in the bathroom, 2 out of 4 in the living area), but the wifi was fantastic and fast. The neighbors smoke, and the smell of cigarettes constantly wafts through the vents or windows (even when shut). I'm extremely sensitive to smoke & would wake up stuffed-up with a raw throat every morning because of it. That's the main reason I wouldn't return.
Most horrifyingly, 3 days before I left, a man arrived with orders to shut off the power to the flat because the electric bill hadn't been paid. I explained that I was renting the flat short-term and begged him to leave it on. I even told him that, if he returned on my final morning, I would let him in to shut off the power then, instead. He was nice enough to leave it on. I immediately emailed Peter with the information, but I never heard back from him. That was unusual and concerning because Peter had previously been so accessible via text and email.
Overall, the flat was adequate. I suppose for the price, it's what can be expected. It was clean enough, but could use a fresh coat of paint, some dusting on the blinds, the dead bugs vacuumed out of the kitchen drawers, and some rust scoured off the exposed pipes in the bathroom. I would recommend it for a short stay, but no longer than a week.
The saving grace was it's location--mere minutes away from Oxford St/Taylor Square, Hyde Park, George/Pitt Streets, etc. The excellent location made the stay worth all the fuss.
Overall, this place was a good pick for us. In the ways that mattered, it had what we required, and was what we expected.
Here's our rating, starting with the best:
Location - really, really good. Near to everything, but in a very quiet, peaceful enclave next to the Surry Hills Police station.
Value - on par with cheap hotels, but more personable, and trustworthy.
Internet - what the hell? It's better than what I have at home, and I'm paying for the highest plan! Very fast, never dropped once.
View - we got a room on the 12th floor, so our view was really nice. Helped a lot, considering that it's a small space and a little bit cramped.
Quiet - in three nights, we had peace and quiet, though if your neighbor is noisy, you'd probably hear it. Luckily, the neighbors were all very good during our stay.
Shower - The water pressure was super. Hot water was industrial strength.
The bed was good - very clean, good quality pillows and mattress. That's important!
The amenities were adequate - especially appreciated the hot water kettle, and the kitchen wares. Not terribly clean, but not so bad. Fridge was good. We didn't touch the TV/DVD/cable, so no comment. It looked like it was in perfect shape.
Overall, the place has some worn edges and could use a renovation, but no worse than you'd get at an equivalent hotel. The building is old, but that's life in the big city, so no surprise.
Peter was very responsive, especially via email, to whatever questions or concerns we had. Our stay there was good!
