About this listing

Beautiful old stone built Manor house situated among vineyards and fields in a small quiet ancient hamlet on outskirts (1 km) of small country market town.
The hamlet was originally the site of a Roman villa in the 3rd century AD, said to be the home of the pro-consul Cassius -hence Fons Cassius (the fountain of Cassius) later corrupted to Fouscais.
The house now comprises 6 bedrooms (all with ensuite bathrooms) and an old orangerie in the grounds converted into a twin bedroom with kitchen & bathroom. There is a big family kitchen/ dining room with large cooking range, family size fridge and dishwasher, a salon (living room) with English cable TV, an office with wireless internet, and a laundry.
Sleeps 10 comfortably- 13 at a stretch

The house is furnished with decorative bygones -the owner is a designer/decorator in London), and is comfortable though not ultra-modern ,and more suitable for reasonably laid back people who prefer ambiance, style and history over highly efficient modernity. It is situated amongst vineyards and conveniently close to (500m) exit 57 on the A75 autoroute, 22 kms from the Mediterranean and in the centre of the beautiful countryside of the Languedoc region-

The hamlet was originally the site of a Roman villa in the 3rd century AD, said to be the home of the Roman governor of the province of Gallia Narbonennsis, the former pro-consul and historian Cassius Dio -hence Fons Cassius (the fountain of Cassius) later corrupted to Fouscais.
The house now comprises 6 bedrooms in the main house (all with ensuite bathrooms) and an old orangerie in the grounds converted into a twin bedroom with kitchen & bathroom, which is located next to the swimming pool and ancient bath-house. On a lower level is the main house with walled garden and terrace leading to a big family kitchen/ dining room with large cooking range, family size fridge and dishwasher, a salon (living room) with English cable TV, an office with wireless internet, and a laundry. Upstairs are the 6 bedrooms.
Sleeps 10 comfortably- 13 at a stretch !
In the grounds are a swimming pool, the orangerie ,an 18th century bath-house, terrace and barbecue, large courtyard with moveable table-tennis table, walled front garden, back drive & car park and other features.

The owner normally lives at the house so its not a holiday home. -and rents it only by personal arrangement.
The character of the house and grounds are not ideally suitable for families with babies or even very young children- though as this is not a rigid rule, it could be discussed further,

Guest access

The entire house and grounds with swimming pool (in use in high summer only) are available with a whole-house weekly rental , and there is a guardian close by the property to help with any problems.

Interaction with guests

A family member lives nearby and can be contacted at any at time for help.

Other things to note

This is an old 'maison de maitre'- similar to a manor house. It is comfortable but not ultra modernised. The owner is an antique dealer and the house has a lot of 'ambiance' and is furnished with a mixture of decorative furniture mirrors paintings etc. Its certainly more suitable for people who are appreciative of faded elegance, are quite laid back and not ultra demanding about modern efficency.

I'm a Mother of 3 - I'm charming, active, empathetic, and helpful. I've got a small bed room on the garden floor in our family 2-floor flat in Camden , and a family house in France that we rent out on a weekly basis at certain times of year.
My husband is a schoolteacher and my father, Malcolm, who lives on the lower floor of the flat , is a decorator/designer, also helps with the lettings and looks after the guests.
