The Space

Hyacinth House in the village of Penestanan, is located in the rice fields, just outside of Ubud, the cultural heart of Bali and a short 15 minute walk away. We are on a small walking path just 10 steps up from the main road and 300 meters into the ricefields.
Close enough to take advantage of all that Ubud has to offer, but far enough away to ensure peace and tranquility.
This is a charming, 2 story, 2 bedroom home with a plunge pool, gazebo and garden.
Your own, self-contained lushly landscaped Paradise with views of the rice fields, close to a great Yoga Studio and many wonderful small, local restaurants.
This is a Balinese style house, recently refurbished with comfortable sofas (indoors and out) a wonderful covered veranda for outdoor dining and relaxing, ethnic artwork, new linen, towels, flat screen TV, DVD player, wireless internet and a full kitchen.
A stay at Hyacinth House includes a full breakfast of fruits, toast and homemade jam, eggs, coffees or tea. It also includes, WiFi, daily cleaning and utilities.
This is a perfect getaway for a single, couple or family with 1-2 children.
The upper bedroom has a queen size bed and small balcony with views over the rice fields plus a toilet and sink. The lower bedroom has a queen size bed set in a small private alcove.
There is a full garden bathroom downstairs with a shower, tub, toilet and sink.
The veranda is large and fully covered and has a sofa and armchair for lounging or reading, a dining table with 4 chairs and a small desk.
There is a great flow to this house between the outdoor and indoor areas, with lots of light, air and gentle breezes.
The garden is fully enclosed to guarantee your privacy.
Please come and enjoy our 'little piece of Paradise".

Guest Access

Guests will have access to all amenities including full use of the kitchen for additional meals.
Many local restaurants will deliver food and organic gardens can deliver produce.

Interaction with Guests

We visit with our guests every couple of days to insure their comfort and answer any questions that they may have about Bali, the culture and what to do and see during their visit.

The Neighborhood

The neighborhood is very convenient to everything in Ubud and is a microcosm of the best that Bali has to offer. A walk out to the rice fields will enable you to experience the daily life of the farmers in this agricultural community. Watch the ducks as they clean the rice fields and get them ready for a new crop; see locals washing their laundry in the streams; visit with local artisans in their homes and really get a sense of what Bali is all about!

  • Villa Hyacinth absolutely surpassed our expectations. We had a lovely stay at the house which is a nice distance from the hustle of Ubud. It's in a gorgeous smaller area with great restaurants and lovely narrow paths to explore. The house is comfortable with everything you might need. Ketut and Pia really took care of us, even entertaining our baby while we ate breakfast. Thank you for a great stay!

  • Having studied and compared tons of Ubud villas with my husband, we finally chose Hyacinth. The first step into the house, we simply SIGHED… thinking we made the right decision. Absolutely elated! After (only) 3 wonderful, relaxing nights from 3-5 June, we were genuinely sad to leave, we wish we stayed much longer. My husband and I with our close friend Ksenia were spoiled with the tranquility and serenity of the surrounding, orchestra of the animals that accompanied us at nights and greeted us in the morning, the hearty yummy homemade breakfast from the local fruits. Super cozy, comfortable sofas and beds, especially the ‘gazebo’ at the top corner of the garden overlooking the plants and ricefields, which was perfect to chill, contemplate or daydream. Within just stone-throw away were nice restaurants of local/international food, also Yoga and Spa. What more do you want? The long narrow pathway to the villa starting from the alley next to the BINTANG shop was always a fun lil journey to us as it was surrounded with dense tropical plants and trees, ricefield, and singing birds. The location can’t be better, a healthy happy lovely nature walk (at least for us who are used to walking in Europe?) of 20-25 minutes to the Ubud Center. Getting snacks and drinks were so easy, just walk a bit to that Bintang shop that was open until 10 PM. Barbara and Henry took care of us with their warmth and friendliness, made us feel like a family. We miss them and the fun exciting chat we had. They also have a couple of fantastic housekeepers. The creative, initiative Made Pia who spoiled us with her homemade baking goodies, and Ketut with her sweet sincere heart who helped us around with shopping and cleaning. They’re the best! Will definitely come back again. Can’t wait. We have found our home in Ubud. Thank you guys for the lovely, unforgettable stay! Missing you a lot. Kathy, Joel & Ksenia

  • Hyacinth House is an ideal place to enjoy all that Ubud has to offer while at the sametime being far enough from the busyness to have a relaxing holiday. There are a number of really good restaurants nearby- be sure to try the Yellow Flower and the Elephant. The walk to the house with a view of the rice paddies adds to the authentic Balinese charm and is a definate plus. We were well taken care of by the friendly housekeepers with a delicious breakfast each morning. Highly recommended!

  • What a fantastic stay we had at Barbara and Henry's Hyacinth House. The house is really cute with its own small pool, perfect for a dip after a walk in the rice paddies or as a morning wake up. The staff are excellent, in particular Ketut who taught us how to dance and make offerings! What a sweetie. The breakfasts are fresh, huge and delicious. And you have the house cleaned from top to bottom every day! We loved our pot of coffee on the verandah upstairs off the bedroom. Penestanan is SUCH a better place to stay than in noisy, crowded Ubud. But of course it depends what you are wanting. If you want peace and natural beauty just a 20 minute walk into Ubud, Hyacinth House is the perfect place. If you take a taxi from the Bintang supermarket, its 5 minutes and the equivalent of $4 AUS. There are excellent places to eat within a 1 to 5 minute walk from the house. Yellow Flower cafe, Elephant cafe and Vespa cafe which is a 15 minute walk but well worth it for the coffee! We will definitely be back! Thanks Henry, Barbara, Milo the adorable Pug, Ketut and Pia for your wonderful hospitality. xxxxxx

  • We stayed at Hyancinth House for four nights in April 2014. On the whole, we had a good stay. The house is quaint and somewhat rustic (i.e. it is not one of the modern cookie-cutter concrete villas that are becoming so common around Bali). It is located in a quiet area beside some rice fields, yet is a short walk from a supermarket with all conveniences. It isn't quite as private as we had hoped, as there are a few places where one can be seen by passers-by, and the neighboring villas are so close that we were sometimes unsure whether sounds we were hearing were coming from next door or downstairs. However, the garden and the plunge pool are great, and there are several nice little spots around the house to relax.

I have to agree with Yasmina's statement that it is a rather precarious walk to the house with a steep drop on one side and no safety fence. It was a little unsettling if arriving back at the house a little after nightfall, especially when raining -- this is certainly not a place I would want to go with small children prone to running ahead excitedly. However, the rest of Yasmina's rant in the visitor reviews below does not match with our experience (nor, it would appear, anybody else's) -- we found the owners and caretakers of the house were honest and professional.

    Response from Barbara:

We requested a copy of your passport in order to comply with the law and protect you and your property.
If anything were to happen, the police would have a record of your stay with us. We register all our guests and pay the fee for their registration.
Since you didn't have a copy of your passport, we gave you an opportunity to make your own.
When you didn't, our housekeeper brought your passport over to our main house where we have a copy machine, copied it and then quickly returned it. If you had wanted to you could have come over to the house with her....so that your passport would remain in your possession.
    Happy Travels

  • We had an awesome stay at Hyacinth House. Everything was so easy. The property is just so serene and the staff Pia and Ketut were very accommodating. We will stay again for sure.

  • We had a wonderful stay at the Hyacinth house! Everything was as described and as shown in the pictures and better. The hosts were lovely and so were the ladies who cleaned the house and cooked us breakfast every day.

We loved being amongst the rice paddies, falling asleep and waking up to the sounds of nature. I could have stayed there forever and will definitely come back.

If you're looking for privacy, beautiful surroundings and a home away from home, this is your place.

  • Our stay in Ubud in this wonderful home has been nothing short of thrilling! With morning swims, surrounded by tropical vegetation, followed by most delicious breakfasts, and short stroll to the paradise of Ubud, the whole stay certainly exceeded our expectations, and would certainly love to come back again soon.

  • Hyacinth House exceeded our expectations in every way! The two story layout gave us room to spread out and enjoy a variety of experiences. It was the little thoughtful touches that made a difference..Flashlights for returning late at night, good lighting on the property, local cell phone with important numbers already added, etc,, And the Staff!! Ketut made yummy breakfasts and cleaned. Pia acted as out Balinese Concierge, checking with us everyday to help us plan, making phone calls for us, etc.. Blue, the driver, was professional, helpful and a wealth of knowledge.
The owners also are lovely people, and gave us lots of recommendations to get us acclimated. Because of all this, (and the dipping pool, and the great location) we stayed and extra 4 nights.
The location is a 10 minute walk into Ubud, away from the hustle and bustle of the tourist scene in a relaxed residential area of Penestanan. There are a plethora of cafes and restaurants here and many near by spas for massage.
    This place is a gem!!

  • This special spot is absolutely perfect. We arrived, as most do to Bali, after a long day of travel. Our driver Blue took us to a local organic cafe so we could pick up dinner before taking us to the house.

The house is located on a walking path- meaning no cars or motor scooters- just the sounds of the garden ponds and the local wildlife of roosters, ghekkos, crickets, and birds.

The house is beautifully decorated and so comfortable with a gorgeous outdoor, rain protected living area. The upstairs bedroom has great views and the screens on the windows are a much appreciated touch, allowing us to sleep with the windows open and not need the mosquito net.

We were here working part time and playing the rest. Barbara and her husband Henry came to by to check on us and offered great recommendations of places to visit and where to eat. We truly felt like their guests and they went above and beyond to ensure we had everything we needed.

Made Pia was there with a smile every morning to make us breakfast and did a remarkable job of getting creative in making us gluten-free breakfasts. She was also a wealth of knowledge around Balinese customs and traditions and her own list of recommendations of where to go.

The house is in a perfect location- a 25 minute walk into Ubud and a quick 10 minute walk along a foot path (again, no cars or bikes) to Alchemy Bali and Sari Organik. Loads of amazing (and cheap) spas in easy walking distance and Intuitive Yoga- a 3 minute walk away where we enjoyed classes by the studio owner and also fabulous Balinese teachers.

All around- this place is absolutely perfect. Our only regret is that we did not book it for longer (by the time we tried, it was already full).

This is a perfect spot to base yourself to explore Ubud and the surrounding villages.

About
My husband and I have had a love affair with Bali for many years, buying our Villa Sunrise on the beach in 2004, opening an Indonesian furniture and art gallery in Santa Fe New Mexico, organizing yoga and meditation retreats, and now having built our Villa in the ricefields of Ubud. Villa Semua Suka and Bungalow Jepun were built in 2011 to western standards with a Balinese esthetic. We have decorated the villa with high quality Balinese art, furniture and artifacts. Villa Sunrise, Villa Semua Suka and Bungalow Jepun are our 'homes' not 'hotels'........welcome Home!
