About This Listing
Located in the heart of the Tuscan countryside, the Agriturismo Castiglion Alberti offers a place of rest and authentic harmony with the surrounding nature. The guesthouse stands on a priviledged position, on the top of a hill covered by oak woods and fields of olive trees. A white road crosses the woods and gets to the house after about 3 Km from the main road linking the Valdarno area with the Senese countryside.
Castiglion Alberti is located in the neighbourhood of three of the most famous Tuscan cities: Firenze, Arezzo and Siena. But there are also many little chacacteristic bourgs, wine cellars with the Chianti label, and the Rapolano Thermal Spas are only 20min driving from the guesthouse.
But the isolation is just apparent. The small bourg of Castiglion Alberti is in reality animated by the activity of the ceramic workshop of the artist Chrstiane Perrochon, located in the old little church, and by the organic farm and guesthouse of Frédéric von Arx. This young farmer dedicates himself to the breeding of Garfagnine cows, horses and little farm animals, grows organic vagetables and produces a 100% organic extra vergine olive oil.
In addition to the rent of the guesthouse, the Agriturismo offers the possibility to taste the genuine products of the farm in a confortable and familiar context. Frédéric has previously learned as a cook in a very renomated Osteria from the area, and now prepares special meals for his guests (on demand), principally using the fresh products from his farm, and sets beautiful tables with the colourful ceramics from the workshop.
Both the ceramic workshop and the Agriturismo have belonged to the von Arx family for over than thirty years, when they discovered this magic place in a state of neglect and decided to give new life to the small bourg.
The two little apartments availables for rent are adjacent to the main house, a traditional country house in stone, and they both have private access to the surrounding garden. They are furnished very simply, but have all the necessary comforts:
- the "Studio" is an independent unity next to the house, consisting in a little kitchen, a bathroom with coloured sanitary fittings from the brand NIC Design, a large bedroom/leavingroom, and a second bedroom with two single beds (optional).
- the second apartment is called "The room with the arches", and it is composed by a main room with two large crossing arches in red bricks. There is a double bed and optionnally a single bed for an other person. This bathroom too is furnished with NIC Designs sanitaries, the result of a collaboration between Christiane Perrochon and an italian factory. There is also a piano for music players and a little library with books in different languages.
The Agriturismo offers the services of half-board and full-board, in addition to the rent of the apartments (breakfast is included in the base price). It can welcome from 2 to 7 people, distributed in the two unities. Even if there isn't a swimmingpool at the house, there is a little pool for children with some other garden games, and in the next village, Capannole (only 3km far from Castiglion Alberti), there is a very nice open air swimming pool. And still the thermal centre of Rapolano is only 20 minutes driving from the house.
Everyone who wants to fill Toscana not like a tourist - choose this place. Old and very cosy house, that would be full of friendly dogs and cats just after you have crossed the threshold; hospitable and cheery owner; beautiful ceramic dishes selfmade; and a huge space of real Toscana - all these you can find here.
We are very happy to find this place and hope to come back sometimes.
The location of this BnB is really beautiful and very convenient for visiting Florence, Sienna etc. Kaspar, the host's father, gave excellent directions and is very warm, friendly and kind. So, if you are looking for basic accommodation in great location, this is suitable.
My partner and I were really very disappointed with our stay here however, because we chose it on the basis that it's listed as an 'Agriturismo', with possible half-board. The food and animals in the photographs looked so beautiful, the description was great and we were keen to stay on a farm. We had enquired about meals when booking but got no answer. We only found out on arrival that the place is no longer an agriturismo and that the farmer/cook/host Frederic was away, so we were not to experience what was listed on the site description or what we had paid for.
The room we were in was in a nice old building and whilst it was cleaned after the last rental, it seemed like it hadn't been touched since. There were pieces of plaster on the floor, dust, cobwebs, dead insects.... We arrived late and tired in the evening and had to try and clean out all the insects - mosquitos, flies, spiders, crickets and a baby scorpion in the shower. What was annoying was that we had been charged a considerable 'cleaning fee' for 2 days yet no one had checked the place before we arrived.
The breakfast that was left the first morning was fine, but the bread was stale and nothing else was left on day 2, so we were hungry!
So, if you just want something basic in a good location with a really friendly host, this place is very nice. But do not expect what is there in the listing, it needs to be updated and the prices should be lowered accordingly. It's a shame, because from the previous reviews it sounds like it once was a fantastic place to stay. Also, be prepared for no wifi and bring plenty of mosquito repellent if you want to able to sleep!
Beautiful area. Kind people. Rooms with VERY spacious and clean.
This is a great place to stay if traveling with friends. All the rooms are connected.
They cooked lunch for us which was amazing. I now look at spaghetti in a brand new way.
Great place to relax!
One last note! Must love animals. (It is a farm after all). Thankfully we do, and we absolutely adored all the cats and dogs. They were always friendly, and wanting to say hi or play fetch.
Castiglion Alberti completely lived up to our expectations. The photos that appeared in the web listing were very appealing and the real thing was even better. You pretty much need your own car to get up the hill on the gravel road that leads from the main road to the farm. It's not that far (couple of km) but I wouldn't want to walk it. Once you get there you are transported into an idyllic environment of forests, pastures with cows, grape vines and olive trees. In the center are the old, and well cared for stone structures. We enjoyed a lot of privacy in the courtyards surrounding our apartment. The family dogs and cats were quite friendly and welcoming. As we are cat and dog lovers, this made us feel very much at home. The hosts were helpful and responsive and we were lucky enough to be able to join them for a fabulous lunch under the trees one afternoon.
We had a really good time staying here- the house is large and gorgeous and has all the necessary elements to make a person feel comfortable (including a great kitchen and homemade olive oil). The family is very nice and hospitable (visitors should know that the rental is located beneath the family's home which makes it not particularly private). I would emphasize that there are a lot of animals at the property and so it is best for people enjoy being around cats and dogs.
Disappointing. We were a group of six and wanted to discover beautiful Tuscany and stay in a great and peaceful agriturismo.
The house is quite beautiful and in the forest, but we were overall disappointed by this place because of its lack of privacy! The owners live upstairs, right above the rentals, and their pets (three cats, two dogs) kept entering our bedrooms / kitchen, also annoying us while we were having dinner outside... If you are allergic to pets, do avoid!
The owners are nice people for sure, but we thought their attitude was not professional since they organized a party with their friends in the garden and were noisy all night long, even using "our" kitchen to cook and store their drinks etc.
Last but not least, the immediate surroundings (Bucine, Montevarchi) are not really nice, you have to drive 40 minutes before reaching beautiful parts of Tuscany like incredible Sienna...We will go back to Tuscany but stay somewhere else.
this home is amazing!! located on the top of a hill that overlooks tuscany, you do need to be just a bit ready for the gravel street drive up there. but it was not bad at all in our little coupe rental car! it is beautiful. the family is just so kind and so lovely!! they are amazing hosts. the home was clean and cute and quaint and had the perfect amount of charm. there was food awaiting us in the fringe and bread and honey on the counter. it was delicous. pauline was so easy to get a hold of and so quick to help with directions, help to the nearest market and she even provided great info on the area and good restraunts near by! she was the perfect host and we fell in love with here family there!!! my mom spent the day walking around the farm and groves. she watched the family make their pottery on the wheel and even had dinner with the family that lives in the main house. they were so kind!! i will stay there again and again!! you should too!
