The most famous and important monument, the starting and ending point of every sightseeing tour is the Amphitheater, popularly called the Arena of Pula, which was once the site of gladiator fights.

Diana
From Diana's guidebook
The Amphitheatre is a must-visit attraction. This well-preserved Roman amphitheater is one of the largest and most spectacular in the world. Take a guided tour to learn about its history and enjoy various cultural events and concerts hosted within its ancient walls. Additionally, the nearby Arch of the Sergii provides a glimpse into the Roman era and is worth exploring.

Jenny
From Jenny's guidebook
The Arena in Pula is definitely one of the most famous monument in Pula. Situated on the Pula's Riviera, it was built in the 1st Century by the Roman Empire. Back than it hosted the gladiators fights and animal hunt, now it hosts the Film Festival in July and concerts. In the 18th century, researchers of Roman art became interested in the Arena, partly because it is the only amphitheater to have four rectangular towers built into the outer wall. From June to August is opened from 08:00 - 22:00.

The most significant tunnel is underneath Kaštel hill and the Venetian fortress of the same name, and in 2011 it was renovated and opened for public exhibitions, and is now called Zerostrasse. One entrance is by the Twin gates and Archeological museum. The other is on the rise near Kandler Street. Large underground gallery is right beneath the fortification, with four corridors leading from it: rise towards Franciscan monastery, ex-gallery Nemeš near taxi station, Technical school (Cvevčić rise) and Twin gate. Besides the tunnels there are many smaller rooms.

Kristina
From Kristina's guidebook
The underground galleries were built during WW1 to shelter people, Pula being a big military port at that time. As it is a network of underground tunnels, there are many entrances and exits. You have to buy a ticket to visit the galleries. As it is relatively cold and humid inside, it is recommended that you do this on a hot summer day, so you can escape the heat for some time.

Sanin
From Sanin's guidebook
Zero Strasse in Pula is a fascinating underground tunnel system that offers visitors a unique journey through the city’s history. The route includes an exhibition inside the tunnels and ends with an elevator ride up to the old fortress on the hill, where you can enjoy beautiful views over Pula’s harbour and surroundings. It is especially pleasant to visit during the hot summer months, as the tunnels provide a cool and refreshing escape from the heat. Combining history, atmosphere, and panoramic scenery, Zero Strasse is a memorable stop for anyone exploring Pula.

Marvel at 250+ species, from sharks to seahorses, including a special spot for rescuing sea turtles. Enjoy hands-on exhibits, a butterfly garden (seasonal), and stunning rooftop views of the Adriatic. Why not let the fish be your tour guide for a day? (They never get lost!) Perfect for families and anyone who loves history, or just a great sea view.

Not just any fish tank, this extraordinary aquarium occupies an entire 19th-century military fort – one of 55 built to defend the Austro-Hungarian Empire's main naval base. There are even sharks in an old artillery unit. The displays are well laid out and themed, with an emphasis on environmental issues. The aquarium does its bit, operating a sea-turtle rescue centre. Other attractions include rays, crabs, eels, starfish, anemones, seahorses, jellyfish, caimans, octopuses and a huge Indian python. Ref: Lonely Planet

Aquarium Pula is a destination that will attract children as well as adults. Alongside the aquarium display, that in a uniquely interesting and educational way presents natural and cultural history of Croatia, the aquarium setting itself is remarkable. Namely, its home is an Austro-Hungarian fort Verudela, built in 1886. and registered as a protected cultural heritage. The fort is in a constant process of revitalization starting in 2002. More than 1500 m2 of aquarium space and 5000m2 of outside area is adapted to suit the needs of the aquarium and the visitors. IMPORTANT: no credit cards accepted, only payment in kuna is accepted.

Pula Castle Kaštel Pula Castle “Kaštel” is an old fortress built by the Venetians, situated on a hill in the center of Pula. It is interesting to point out that there are evidence that hill fort of the Histri was once in the same location. Because of its dominating position, the fortress was always used for defense of the city, bay and port. The Castle was built between 1630 and 1633, based on a design from French military engineer Antonio De Villa, so it belongs to the French style. It was always an important defensive point for Venetian control of the Adriatic. The stone from large Roman theater was used for its construction, along with the one from other quarries around Pula.

Jolanda
From Jolanda's guidebook
From the upper circular street one of the perpendicular paths leads to the top of the central hill of the city where a star-shaped castle with four bastions was built in 1630. Wishing to protect the city and its harbor, because of it great significance in maritime trade in the North Adriatic, the Venetians commissioned the building of the Castle from the French military architect Antoine de Ville. This was most probably the site of an earlier fortress dating from the pre-Roman and Roman period. The Histrian hill-fort was primarily built for defensive purposes, whereas in the Roman period a small military garrison was stationed here. Today the Castle houses the Historical Museum of Istria.

Fronted by a high porch supported by six Corinthian columns, this small but perfectly proportioned temple was built sometime between 2 BC and AD 14. It survived the Christian era by being converted into a church, only for it to be destroyed by a bomb in 1944. The subsequent stone-by-stone reconstruction has brought it back to something closely approaching its former glory, and it now houses a small archaeological display. Ref: Lonely Planet

Erica
From Erica's guidebook
The Temple, situated in the Forum, is dedicated to goddess Roma and Emperor Augustus. It was constructed between the year 2 BC and AD 14 when the Emperor died. According to its shape it follows the typical pattern of temples. The function of the Temple changed through the years: with the ending of the pagan ancient era its original pagan function ceased and the temple was afterwards used as a church, granary, and in the beginning of the 19th century it was a museum for stone monuments. In 1944 it was hit by a bomb and completely destroyed. It was reconstructed between the years 1945 and 1947 and nowadays it houses a collection of ancient stone and bronze sculptures. The other twin temple, of which only the back wall is preserved, is believed to have been constructed at the same time and in the same style and was called the Temple of Diana

Family day out Glavani park is an ideal place for a fun, reasonably-priced family day out. The high ropes can be enjoyed by parents and children alike, and maybe even grandparents. A typical timescale for completing the whole course is between 2 and 3 hours but you can take as long as you wish, and, as an organised party can go round as many times as you wish. In addition to the easiest rope route, the younger members of the family can enjoy playing on the wooden bouncy animals in the childrens playground, petting the sheep, goats, rabbits, etc in the farmyard, bouncing in the nets, etc. There are also shady woodland walks if you want a cool stroll through the countryside.

The novelty of four tall standing logs at Glavani, only six kilometers distance from Barban and ten from Vodnjan-Dignano, is sure to attract your attention because of its extraordinarity. This theme park is one of Croatia’s largest adrenalin parks and its surface area stretches for 1,5 ha. Its experienced staff will teach you how to wear and use your equipment and how to operate the carabineers and rollers. With their help, you first have to complete the two-meter high yellow route, then the six-meter high blue route, and finally the ten-meter high black route. To boost your adrenalin level even higher, both the blue and the black routes end in a 113-metre zip-line taking you from the first to the last platform. As icing on the cake, you can descend through 120 meter long zip line which highest part is situated 20 meters above the ground. After it, you further continue with the most demanding part, suspension bridge with a unicycle. The whole part, zip line and suspension bridge is named the Devil's passage. At the end, you should try out the greatest attraction in the park, 11 meters tall swing which will put a smile on your face. Besides the adventurous part of the park, you can visit a small animal farm or relax in a hanging net. Brijuni National Park is an oasis of the magnificent harmony between man, animal and plant life. There are almost 700 plant species and about 250 bird species on the islands, whereas the mild Mediterranean climate makes it a pleasant health resort. After leaving Fažana, the line of green islands viewed from the boat, transforms into Veliki Brijun, the largest of the 14 islands. The traces of dinosaurs, remains of Antiquity and later periods, achievements of modern times are all present in this area, whose development as an exclusive resort starts in 1893 thanks to the “old Austrian”, the industrialist Paul Kupelwieser, owner of the Brijuni Islands. This fashionable seaside resort and one of the leading health resorts started developing and gaining popularity all over Europe and worldwide, but this unfortunately ended with the beginning of World War I. From then on Brijuni were mostly known for the political activities of Marshal Josip Broz Tito, the president of former Yugoslavia, who arrived on Brijuni for the first time in 1947. The usual, short introduction to Brijuni is a tour by tourist train that takes visitors through all the different natural beauties; through the safari park, by the Byzantine castrum, Roman residential villa in Verige Bay and many other interesting sights. Right by the harbor, close to hotels "Istra", "Neptun" and "Karmen" is the church of St. German from the 15th century which houses an exhibit of Istrian frescoes and copies of Glagolitic monuments. Nearby is the natural science exhibit, archaeological museum and exhibition "Tito on Brijuni".

Stefan
From Stefan's guidebook
Brijuni Islands is an extraordinary combination of natural and cultural heritage. The mild climate and favorable geographical conditions, deep bays and well defended high altitude locations, ensured the continuity of human activities on the island from prehistory to recent times. The relatively small islands, covering an area slightly larger than 7 km2, have about a hundred of sites and buildings of archaeological, historical and cultural value. From ancient Roman villas, palaces of the Illyrian, Byzantine fortresses, a medieval church to the luxurious presidential residence, which was visited by the most powerful politicians and the most famous stars of the 20th century. A mild Mediterranean climate makes it a pleasant and healing place. Here there are almost 700 species of plants and 250 species of birds. Brijuni consists of 14 islands of which the largest is Veliki Brijuni. The usual half-day introduction to Brijuni is conducted on a tourist train through the different natural beauties, through the safari park, the Byzantine castrum, the Roman residential villa in the Verige Bay and many other interesting sights. Along the harbor, there are the hotels "Istra", "Neptune" and "Carmen" and the church of St German from the 15th century in which there is an exhibition of Istrian frescoes and glagolitic monuments. Nearby is the natural, archaeological museum and the exhibition of "Tito on Brijuni".

Brijuni National Park is an oasis of the magnificent harmony between man, animal and plant life. Away from the crowds you can enjoy peaceful nature. You can reserve by telephone but you should do it at least a day in advance. Your visit includes the services of an English-speaking guide and a mini-train to take you around. The price depends on the season but note that you pay the same price whether or not you take the tour. There are a number of daily boats back and forth between Fazana and the National Park. Nothing stops you from staying on after the tour and exploring on your own or lolling on the beach. In fact, it's highly advisable! You can easily rent a bike or a golf car to tool around. The water is unbelievably clear and the fish life is abundant. It's a great place for snorkelling. During the summer Small Brioni island become a theatre under the stars where theatre group Ulysses every year present something very interesting. The problem for the foreigners is that the theatre is mainly in Croatian. Rade Serbedzija, a World famous actor, is one of the main drivers of Ulysses’ group. If you are lucky you may also assist to the World famous guitar players like Vlatko Stefanovski and Miroslav Tadic or violin player Stefan Milenkovic. It is worth to check every year at the beginning of the summer what shows will be presented on Small Brioni. http://www.ulysses.hr/en/

This hilltop village is just adorable. Labin is a charming town made mainly of pastel-painted cottages on a magnificent hilltop. The tiny, twisting lanes of the town conceal numerous attractive spots, shops, and ateliers. It is also the location of the greatest pizza (perhaps in all of Croatia). Pizzeria Rumore is set on a beautiful patio with views of the rolling green hills of Istria and the Adriatic Sea in the distance.

Escapian
From Escapian's guidebook
Bistro-pizzeria Rumore in Labin is one of the most famous pizzerias in Istria and in the wider region. Their pizzas are good, of high quality, and the guests recognize that. Pizzas are made from top-quality ingredients, but the emphasis is on making the dough, which must rest for 24 to 30 hours. Because of their way of working, they received a certificate of authenticity of Neapolitan pizza, which was awarded to Rumore by the AVPN (Associazione Verace Pizza napoletana). The pizzeria is located on the San Marco promenade in Labin, nearby the restaurant Kvarner, so the chef Josip Gobo can easily oversee both kitchens. The interior is modernly decorated, in warm tones, and the space is dominated by the golden Stefano Ferrara bread oven, one of the most famous Italian oven manufacturers. Fragrant pizzas come out of it. Margherita is the same as in Naples, with a delicious and extremely well-made dough that does not leave a heavy feeling in the stomach. We were delighted by the new pizza called 5 bianchi (5 white), with 5 types of cheese: cream cheese, ricotta, gorgonzola, Fior di latte and provola (smoked mozzarella). Cheese lovers will enjoy this unique taste. Rumore also offers burgers and various salads. Be sure to try their delicious, light and not too sweet cannoli - Sicilian rolls made of crispy dough filled with ricotta and candied fruit. If you are in Istria and you like pizza, you should not miss the Rumore pizzeria in Labin.

A popular destination in Istria is the Brijuni National Park , near the resort of Fazana . It is an archipelago of 14 islands or islets, which has been a nature reserve since 1983. Daily excursion boats and a ferry bring visitors to the largest island, Veli Brijun. Here you can visit some highlights, such as the local safari park with llamas and zebras, a bird sanctuary in the south of the island and interesting archaeological sites. Sanin

Brijuni National Park is one of the most beautiful excursions in Istria, known for its unique combination of unspoiled nature, rich history, scenic landscapes, and relaxed island atmosphere. A visit to Brijuni offers a memorable experience of walking through peaceful greenery, discovering cultural heritage sites, and enjoying spectacular views of the Adriatic Sea. The most famous and most visited part of the park is Veliki Brijun, the main island, where visitors can explore historical landmarks, landscaped paths, archaeological remains, and the well-known Safari Park. One of the most popular ways to discover the island is the official excursion that includes a boat transfer, guided tour, tourist train ride, and access to key attractions on the island. The guided excursion to Veliki Brijun includes the boat ride from Fažana, guidance by a professional guide, the tourist train ride around the island, a visit to the Safari Park, museum exhibitions, and the return boat transfer. An important thing to know before planning your visit is that entry to the actual main island of Brijuni should be booked through the official National Park sales channels. The park states that individual visitors buy tickets through its official webshop, and it also publishes the official boat schedule for departures from Fažana to Veliki Brijun. Visitors should be careful with the many tourist boat offers available along the coast. Although some excursions may advertise a “Brijuni trip,” they often do not include entry to Veliki Brijun itself, and they usually do not include the official island program such as the Safari Park and tourist train ride. If you wish to escape from the swarming streets and sweltering heat of the city on a summer afternoon into a colorful autumn or a scented spring morning you should go to Šijana Forest. Surely you won’t regret it. Only two kilometers from the very center of the city you will find heaven for your body and soul. The narrow winding labyrinth-like paths at every curve reveal surprises, a small animal or a beautiful specimen of forest flora. Through the tall tree tops the sunrays shyly protruding just to enable you to see where a certain path leads. It is equally nice here in spring when the soil is covered with fragrant carpets of cyclamen and in autumn when under the fallen leaves you can discern caps of many species of mushrooms. Admire them in their natural habitat, rather than picking them! All flora and fauna in this forest is protected, so all you can take home are memories of such lovely sights.

– This small resort is the gateway to Cape Kamanjak. Some good restaurants and a few shops, however as you drive through the village, go straight on as the road narrows, rather than following the signs for the campsite and you will come across Kamanjak. Great for walks, but most pay the entrance fee to take their cars onto the peninsula and then park up. The coves are beautiful and the water is clearer here than anywhere else in Istria. Pinizule is our favourite beach which appears as you leave the pine wooded area. Another area of interest is the cliffs by the Safari Bar towards the bottom of the peninsula. Here you will see cliff jumping of all different heights. Safari Bar is a lovely bar built into the tall grass with benches and tables made from carved tree trunks.

The town of Bale-Valle lies at the intersection of roads leading to Rovinj-Rovigno, Pula-Pola and Trieste, only 5 kilometres from the sea. The town developed around the medieval castle of the Soardo and Bembo families in the 15th century and is mentioned in the earliest written documents as the Roman settlement Castrum Vallis. It is yet another typical Istrian town built on a hilltop with narrow streets and stone houses that create a special atmosphere. The town is dominated by the bell tower of the Parish Church of St. Julian, built at the end of the 19th century. At Colone Cove near Bale-Valle a very rich site of fossils belonging to several species of dinosaurs has been discovered.

Golden Gate (Zlatna vrata) or Arch of the Sergii leads you to the main city square - Forum. In Forum there is Temple of Augustus and old town hall. The “Golden Gate” was erected between the years 29 and 27 BC by the Sergi family, in honor of three members of the family who held important positions in Pula at that time. This triumphal arch leaned against the city gate Porta Aurea thus called because of its richly ornamented arch or gilded elements. The gate and wall were pulled down in the beginning of the 19th century as a result of the city expansion outside the city walls. The Arch was constructed in Corinthian style with strong Hellenistic and Asia Minor influences both in the method and ornaments. As the eastern side was not visible it has remained for the most part uncarved, while the western, town side is richly decorated. Today numerous cultural performances, theatrical and musical, are held on the square next to the Arch. The adjacent street is a shopping area.
