Airbnb Helps Expand Brazil's Tourist Capacity

SÃO PAULO - June 2, 2014 - Airbnb, the world’s leading community-driven hospitality company, today announced it projects hosts in Brazil will welcome more than 120,000 unique visitors from outside the country. On average, Airbnb hosts in Brazil will earn about US $3,000.00 and will have an average of three bookings throughout the tournament.

Travelers from more than 100 different countries will stay on Airbnb during the World Cup. The top countries include 40,000 travelers from the U.S., over 12,000 from Australia, 10,000 from the UK, 8,000 from Canada, 8,000 from France, 8,000 from Colombia, and over 5,000 from Germany. On its peak night during the World Cup, Airbnb projects over 50,000 guests will be staying on Airbnb throughout Brazil.

“Representatives from the Ministry of Tourism and the 12 host cities have encouraged citizens to open their homes and welcome visitors attending the tournament,” said General Director for Airbnb Brazil, Christian Gessner. “We are thrilled that our community has embraced this opportunity to provide an authentic travel experience while expanding the tourist capacity of the host cities to ensure Brazil is the ultimate World Cup host.”

The Airbnb impact will be felt across Brazil with an increase in tourist capacity by double digits in Sao Paulo, Salvador, Recife, Fortaleza, and Brasilia. In total, Airbnb projects it will have over 31,000 listings in the host cities, with more than 10,000 total guests staying in each of Brasilia, São Paulo and Salvador during the World Cup.

This year alone, Airbnb has added more than 11,000 listings in Rio de Janeiro and expects there will be over 17,000 total listings in the city by the time World Cup begins, expanding Rio’s tourist capacity by almost 75 percent.

Airbnb’s international community will be using Airbnb to explore Brazil and travel to multiple cities during the World Cup, with roughly 40 percent of guests booking more than one destination in Brazil on Airbnb.
