Vaguely reminiscent of Wrigley Field in Chicago, Mesa’s Sloan Park is like a second home to Cubs fans. (Seriously, everyone we talked to here has Chicago ties). The ballpark itself is filled with nods to the city, like that hard-to-miss red “Wrigley” sign. In fact, people are so proud here that it’s taken on the name “Wrigleyville of the West.” Food trucks and beer go for days at this place. Our favorite has to be Huss Brewing’s Magic in the Ivy... which, yes, has Chicago roots. There’s plenty of lawn space to go around, and even a bar out in center field.

The Salt River opens around May for tubing down the river and closes for the year in September. The water gets warmer the later in the summer you go. This is a relaxing, cool way to see the scenery. There is a company: Arizona's Salt River Tubing and Recreation. They rent you a tube and do shuttle bus drives to drop you off and pick you up and take you back to your car. The cost is around $19 per person. It takes about 35 minutes to get the the shuttle area. Check out there website for exact cost and times.

Less than 15 miles from the house, visitors can rent an inner tube and receive a complimentary shuttle from Salt River Tubing. Floating the Salt River showcases the beautiful desert landscape. One will enjoy the sights of riverbanks lined with mesquite trees, Tonto National Forest's textured cliffs, wild horses, bald eagles, and more. Salt River Tubing is open May - October . If you prefer a lively float with a party atmosphere, the weekends are very popular. Those seeking more solitude will be happier with a weekday float.

The campus of ASU is an officially designated arboretum. There are some trees that are on the national registry. I especially like to walk over on the weekend morning when there are no students. Be sure to visit the ASU Art Museum on the SE corner of Mill Ave and 10th Street-free and open to the public. Gammage Auditorium on campus was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright and touring Broadway plays are regular features.

While the Desert Botanical Garden is technically in Phoenix, it really borders Tempe, making it such a short drive away for anyone staying in Tempe that it’s worth including on this list. The Desert Botanical Garden is really a must-do for any visitor to Tempe. During the summer, as Tempe gets hotter and soars above 100 degrees, I really recommend visiting the garden as early as possible. Since they open at 7am, the best time to go is right when they open for the coolest temperature and best lighting for photos. They also sometimes do things like flashlight tours at night and other special night exhibits, so it’s worth looking on their website to see what’s on and tour times.

4725 E Mayo Blvd. This place is AMAZING! The MIM is the #1 rated attraction in Arizona and the second rated tourist attraction in the state (behind the Grand Canyon.) One of Scottsdale’s most iconic courses, Troon North features two championship courses: the Monument Course and the Pinnacle Course. Known for its dramatic desert terrain, both courses offer stunning views of the McDowell Mountains and challenging layouts with wide fairways, strategically placed bunkers, and natural desert features like cacti, boulders, and rock outcroppings. The Pinnacle Course is particularly famous for its more challenging design, with demanding elevation changes and tough green complexes. The best view of the Phoenix can be had by climbing the trails at Camelback Mountain between Phoenix and Paradise Valley. There are two trails that will lead you up to the peak: a steep, rugged trail called Echo Canyon and a less strenuous trail called Cholla. The trails are over a mile long (1.14 and 1.4 miles respectively). The trails are open from sunrise to sunset.

Gorgeous views at the lake and on the drive there. There is a dinner paddleboat cruise that's fun, or pack a lunch and sit on the beach. Look for Desert Bighorn Sheep up in the rocks! This is a beautiful lake that weaves through the tall canyon walls. This is about an hour drive from Queen Creek. Even the drive is beautiful as it weaves through the desert with so many stunning views. You'll probably want to stop and take a few pictures. During the rainy season, if you catch it right, there will be waterfalls falling over the edges of the canyon walls. They do boat and canoe rentals at the marina. There are picnic areas at the lake and it's fun just to bring a tube and swim in the cool water. They do scenic nature cruises and dinner cruises on the Dolly Steamboat. Requires Tonto pass to park.

Canyon Lake is the perfect spot to cool off. Go for a swim, launch the boat, hang out on the beach, or all of the above. It’s an ideal day trip for a picnic by the shoreline and tossing a line. You’ll love the steep mountain vistas and the secluded sites to get away from it all. The Canyon Lake Marina and Campground offers marina services, has a restaurant, and a relaxing beach area. The lake’s two boat launches, designated swimming area, and three recreation sites (Acacia Picnic Site, Palo Verde Recreation Site, and Boulder Creek Recreation Site) are open year-round and offer easy access to some serious water play. Only 20 minutes from the house - Saguaro Lake is a gorgeous reservoir on the Salt River. Come here for a bite at ShipRock Restaurant, take a cruise on the Desert Belle, have a picnic next to the water, or if you're lucky enough to know someone with a boat - dip into the marina and go for a ride.

The park also hosts numerous events and festivals, be sure to check their calendar. We live in the desert, so it's not often that you get to enjoy a body of water, especially so close.
