Part of the NC Aquarium system, Jennette's Pier is "hurricane proof" working fishing pier with wind turbines and a gift shop. The beach here is also nice and has a bathhouse and parking lot. Right across the street are a playground for the kids and Sam and Omie's restaurant - an Outer Banks institution. For snacks while you're​ hanging out on the beach here, try Cahoon's Market right next door. They have homemade salads and sandwiches as well as produce and gourmet items and beach gear.

We love to go and see the boats bringing in the catch of the day in the afternoon, depending on the season. Summer time is the best time to visit around 2 - 4pm. Kids love seeing the big fish loaded onto the docks. You can also dine or grab a drink at the Oregon Inlet center’s Sea Chef restaurant, opens at 11am.

The Oregon Inlet Fishing Center is located on Bodie Island right before you get to the new bridge to Hatteras Island. This is where the sport-fishing vessels come in after going out to the Gulf Stream for the day. If you arrive mid-late afternoon, you will see them arrive one by one and toss out their catch to be counted. It's very fun to watch these local, skilled watermen. You can also arrange to go out on one of these boats to the Gulf Stream or just off shore fishing either by a make-up charter or head boat. A fishing trip to the Gulf Stream is one of the best ways to experience the essence of the Outer Banks.

Late afternoon and you've had enough sun? Head out here about 3pm to watch the fishing boats come in and unload their catches. We've seen everything from a 300 lb.marlin that had to be lifted out with a crane, to all manner of sharks, tuna and mahi mahi.

Easy drive to the tallest sanddune on the East Coast. My recommendation, go before sunset (evening) and watch the sunset from the top. It will much cooler at that time of day and the views and colors are spectacular. Be prepared for a mild workout climbing the dune.

Play time at Jockey's Ridge. One of the largest moving sand dunes in the world. Take the kids and roll, sandboard, hanglide, slide, hike, explore. The back entrance has a nice beach on the sound. Nice calm and shallow waters here for the kids.

Features the tallest, active sand dunes on the East coast with beautiful, panoramic views of the outer banks! Incredible views from the top, especially at sunset. Offers hiking, kite flying, sand boarding, hang gliding, swimming in the sound, kayaking, kite surfing and windsurfing. You can access the park easily from our house. It is a short 1/4 mile stroll or bike ride from our house! Walk through the marked trails and you will see the giant sand dunes within 10 minutes. You will also see the soundside beach on your left as you enter the parking lot! There are multiple access trails to the beach as you continue walking on the trails.
