Gateway of India is Mumbai’s most iconic landmark, overlooking the Arabian Sea in Colaba. Built in 1924, this grand basalt arch was constructed to commemorate the visit of King George V and Queen Mary to India. 📍 Distance from the apartment: Approx. 25 km 🚕 Around 1 hour by cab (depending on traffic) Located right opposite the majestic Taj Mahal Palace, the Gateway is a must-visit for first-time visitors to the city. It’s best experienced: • Early morning for peaceful sea views • At sunset for golden light and photographs • In the evening when the monument is beautifully lit From here, you can also take a short ferry ride to Elephanta Caves or simply stroll along the waterfront soaking in Mumbai’s energy. The Gateway of India is, without doubt, one of the most popular tourist hotspots of Mumbai. Sitting proudly on the Apollo Bunder, it overlooks the Arabian Sea. It is one of the defining monuments of the city of Mumbai and was built in the year 1924. The construction was undertaken by the famous architect George Wittet, to commemorate the visit of King George V and Queen Mary to Mumbai. The imposing structure of the monument is a beautiful confluence of Indian, Arabic and Western architecture and has become a popular tourist hub in the city. It is also the starting point of a number of ferry services that ply to the historic Elephanta Caves. Nicknamed 'Mumbai's Taj Mahal', the foundation of this landmark was laid in 1911 and it was inaugurated 13 years later in 1924. The structure in itself is a made of yellow basalt and solid concrete and is embellished with numerous Muslim and Hindu motifs as well. The basalt arch of the Gateway served as the entry and exit access to India through waterways before independence and was the exit point from where the last British ship left India for England. There are statues of Swami Vivekananda and Chhatrapati Shivaji that have been installed near the Gateway as well. The view from the sea of the Gateway complex, especially at night is quite ethereal and beautiful. The Gateway of India is thus, not only a historic artefact but an example of marvellous architecture in itself!

Elephanta Caves are a UNESCO World Heritage Site located on Elephanta Island in Mumbai Harbour. These ancient rock-cut caves date back to around the 5th–8th century and are dedicated primarily to Lord Shiva. 📍 Distance from the apartment: Approx. 25 km to the Gateway of India 🚕 Around 1 hour by cab to Gateway of India ⛴️ Followed by a 1-hour ferry ride to Elephanta Island The highlight of the caves is the magnificent Trimurti sculpture, a massive three-faced depiction of Shiva representing creation, preservation, and destruction. In the early years of the nineteenth century, when Bombay was still a patchwork of fishing villages, marshland, and narrow dusty roads, a small shrine appeared in the village of Prabhadevi. It was built in 1801 by a wealthy contractor named Laxman Vithu Patil, but the true force behind the temple was a woman named Deubai Patil. Deubai had no children of her own. Instead of praying for a child, she funded the temple with a quiet, unusual hope — that women who could not conceive might find blessings here. At the heart of the shrine stood an unusual image of Lord Ganesha. Unlike most Ganpati idols, whose trunks curve to the left, the idol here has its trunk turned to the right — a rare and powerful form known as Siddhi Vinayak, the giver of fulfilled wishes. The temple itself was modest: a small structure with a single dome and a narrow courtyard. Few could have imagined that this quiet shrine would one day become one of India’s most visited temples. But word began to travel. Merchants prayed for prosperity. Sailors prayed for safe voyages. Families came seeking children, success, and relief from hardship. And slowly, the belief took root across the city that the Ganpati of Prabhadevi listens quickly. Today the Siddhivinayak Temple stands transformed — a grand structure of stone and gold visited by millions each year. Long before Bandra’s promenades filled with cafés and traffic, the hill above the Arabian Sea was known simply as Sundarban Hill — a quiet rise overlooking fishing villages and coconut groves. It was here, in the 16th century, that Portuguese Jesuits built a small chapel dedicated to the Virgin Mary. At its heart stood a statue of Mother Mary holding the infant Jesus, brought by missionaries sailing from Portugal. The fishermen of Bandra soon began to believe the statue possessed unusual grace. They prayed to her before venturing into the unpredictable Arabian Sea. But the church’s history would not remain peaceful. In the 18th century, during raids along the western coast, Arab pirates attacked the chapel. Believing the statue was made of gold, they mutilated it — cutting off the right arm of the figure before throwing it into the sea. Years later, fishermen discovered another statue floating in the waters near the shore. The villagers believed it was a divine sign and brought it back to the hill. A new statue eventually replaced the damaged one, and devotion to Our Lady of the Mount only grew stronger. The present Mount Mary Basilica was built in 1904, standing high above Bandra like a watchful guardian of the coast. Even today, sailors, actors, politicians, and ordinary Mumbaikars climb the steps to light candles and whisper prayers. Every September, during the famous Mount Mary Fair, thousands arrive with wax offerings shaped like hearts, homes, babies, or limbs — symbols of hopes, healings, and miracles sought from the Lady of the Mount. From the hill, the sea stretches endlessly westward. And in the quiet of the basilica, amid flickering candles and salt-tinged wind, the centuries of faith still linger in the air. Juhu beach is the longest beach in Mumbai and the most popular among tourists as well. It is renowned for its wide variety of street food that has a typical Mumbai flavour and is sweet and sour. The surrounding area of Juhu is one of the poshest localities in Mumbai and is home to a lot of famous Bollywood and TV celebrities - the most famous being Amitabh Bachchan's bungalow - and it is not rare to spot a celebrity jogging on the beach. Television shoots are often held and a number of toy-sellers, roasted corn vendors and acrobats attract the eye. While here, you may also visit the iconic ISKCON Temple which is meters away from the beach or watch a theatre performance at the famous Prithvi Cafe. Just taking walk across the beach sand can bring an infinite sense of calm. Although the beach was criticized for being unclean, efforts by BMC have significantly improved the scenery in the past few years.
