Book unforgettable activities hosted by locals on Airbnb.

Travel like a local

San Francisco is as layered as the clothing worn here. Peel back its modern tech-obsessed reputation to discover classic charm in the City. Neon signs shaped like martini glasses flicker on at the old-school bars, tempting passers-by en route to a bucket-list meal. People ride bikes in search of windmills and waterfalls in Golden Gate Park. San Francisco teems with things to do (rain, fog, or shine): cooking classes, sailing trips, or vintage VW bus tours, among other activities. See for yourself with Airbnb Experiences.

Redwoods of Marin & Mt Tamalpais
We meet in Sausalito then shuttle to Mill Valley, where we start our walking exploration of Marin's magical redwood forest. Following quiet backroads and footpaths, we visit quiet groves of ancient redwood trees and follow spring-fed creeks to natural pools and cascading falls. In this peaceful forest, unique to the northern California and southern Oregon coastal region, the sequoia sempervirens soar hundreds of feet into the sky, providing an unequaled nature experience at base of mighty Mt. Tamalpais. Along the way, you learn about the coastal redwoods' amazing ecology and their clever adaptations for survival over many millions of years. It is a remarkable escape into nature on the slopes of beautiful Mt. Tam. Guests can also meet us in Mill Valley's Old Mill Park, where the walk starts at 10AM weekdays or 12:30PM on weekends. Weekday guests need to catch the 7:35AM ferry from San Francisco arriving at 8:05AM. Weekend ferry guests need to catch the 12:05PM Golden Gate ferry from the terminal behind SF's Ferry Building (foot of Market St.) The ferry arrives in Sausalito at 12:35PM. I will meet all Sausalito guests outside the Sausalito Chamber of Commerce, 22 El Portal, next to the Inn Above Tide. If you need another start time, please contact me via Airbnb direct message. This refreshing walk is also ideal for groups and corporate team building outings!
Pottery in the Mission
We will start with some of the interesting history of the studio space. Then I will get you situated on the wheel and show you how to properly secure your lump of clay. After the clay is secured we start the wheel spinning nice and fast. I will show you how to center the clay which is a very important (and frustrating) stage of making pottery on the wheel. After we successfully center the clay, you will explore how the clay moves and reacts to your touch. We will work to form a simple shape such as a bowl or cup. To finish off we will do some clean up of the form and remove the piece from the wheel in order to start experimenting with the next piece. You can expect to get to practice with around 6 lumps of clay (more if you are ambitious) and most people will create 2-3 pieces by the end of the session. Pieces will be professionally finished, fired, and glazed after the experience. This process takes at least 3 weeks. After the pieces are finished you can pickup in the studio or they can be shipped. Shipping costs are paid by the guest. Other things to note Come wearing clothes that you don't mind getting messy. We will provide aprons. If you have long hair plan to have a hair tie or a way to secure your hair back. Trim long nails if you are able.

San Francisco Bay Sailing Awesomeness
Get a taste for what an awesome experience living, working and voyaging on a sailboat can be, while viewing fantastic landmarks from the uncrowded deck, using sustainable and eco friendly wind power. Perhaps choose an evening sail, and enjoy a wonderful sunset. We will be outside only, with plenty of space, breathing clean Pacific air! Get a little salty while we sail and chat about what it's like going far from land and crossing oceans, from endless waves and wind, to calm nights under starry skies. Get a feel for what it's like to live and thrive in a constantly moving small space, in a beautiful but unforgiving environment. Hear what it's like to battle Tuna and Sailfish while under sail, and have the freshest sushi minutes later. And to anchor in tropical anchorages, bathe in the sea, and surf uncrowded waves right from the boat. Ask as little or as much as you like about surviving storms, living in foreign countries, meeting great cruising friends, and unplugging from normal living to find another path. Perhaps, ask how you can get started yourself. Spend time aboard a beautiful, ocean-going yacht that has provided a safe and peaceful haven for her crew over the span of two decades in a green, earth friendly fashion.
Sausalito's Headlands & The Golden Gate Walking Tour
Join a local guide for a scenic and insightful walk on San Francisco Bay. Enjoy the beauty of the coastal parklands just outside Sausalito in the Marin Headlands. We meet at the Sausalito Chamber of Commerce next to the ferry landing and shuttle to Fort Baker to enjoy views of the Golden Gate Bridge, Angel Island, San Francisco, Alcatraz and San Francisco Bay in the headlands above Horseshoe Cove. We make a gradual ascent on a car-free path to a sensational overlook at Battery Spencer high above the bridge to enjoy commanding views of the Golden Gate Bridge and the wide expanse of the Pacific Ocean. After exploring the overlook, we head back to bridge level, where you can choose to walk on-your-own across the Golden Gate Bridge (45 minutes, 1.7 miles) back to San Francisco or continue on to Fort Baker. If you choose not to walk the bridge, we conclude our walk back in Sausalito. Note: If the walk is not on the calendar for the date you want or fully booked, please contact me and we might be able to accommodate you. This walk is also ideal for corporate team building outings! Please note: If you prefer to drive to Sausalito, I will meet you at the entrance to the Bay Area Discovery Museum in Fort Baker. Plenty of free parking available in a large outdoor lot at the museum.
Redwoods of Mt Tam Photo & Nature Art Walk
Embark on a creative escape into nature and the fresh air of Marin's majestic Redwood forest. Following quiet backroads and trails along spring-fed creeks to groves of soaring redwood trees. In this peaceful forest, unique to the northern California and southern Oregon coastal region, the sequoia sempervirens rise hundreds of feet into the sky, providing a unique habitat for wildlife. We stop to photograph natural pools and lovely Cascade Falls, where we create botanical prints on sunny days. These works of nature art use the cyanotype photographic process that makes beautiful Prussian blue prints of ferns and leaves we find along the way. On overcast days, we gather forest leaves along our route to create elegant botanical stencil prints. White wood frames with glass are provided for the print you make in the forest, a wonderful keepsake from this informative, visually stunning nature walk and photo outing led by local photographer, printmaker and writer Ben Davidson. Our three-hour outing meets in downtown Sausalito at 9:30AM weekdays and noon on weekends. We shuttle to nearby Mill Valley to start our exploration of the shady redwood forest canyons at the base of Mt. Tamalpais in the heart of Marin County. If the walk is booked and you can meet us in Mill Valley, I can accommodate you. Also see my Redwood Forests of Marin & Mt. Tam www.airbnb.com/experiences/61714
Explore the Golden Gate Waterfront on a Photo Walking Tour
Escape to the Golden Gate waterfront, learn about its rich history. We start with a photo session at the elegant Beaux Arts Palace of Fine Arts before heading to Fort Point and the Golden Gate Bridge, one of the world's most beloved and scenic icons. Ben is a native San Franciscan, a travel writer and pro photographer. He leads you on a loop route to hidden vantage points for world class views. Your photos will be precious mementos from this unique San Francisco walking adventure. The Golden Gate Bridge spans the narrow opening to San Francisco Bay. It shows off its famous reddish-orange glow in various hues that change throughout the day. Even on foggy summer days, the bridge's tall towers and slender cables mysteriously disappear in the fog, providing ample opportunity for dramatic black and white photographic interpretations. Strolling along Crissy Field, we see the bridge from little known perspectives on our scenic hike on the lovely coastal landscape of the Golden Gate. Learn the rich history of the Bay, from the native Ohlone people who inhabited this region for thousands of years, to the Spanish and Mexican colonial eras, to the military forts of the Presidio. Note: If the walk is not on the calendar for the date you want or fully booked, please contact me and I might be able to accommodate you. This walk is also ideal for corporate team building outings!

Nature Meditation & Yoga on the Pacific Coast
We will deeply connect with the land as we immerse ourselves in mindfulness in nature. We will meet in a beautiful bay area park where the sea, sky and land meet. As we walk to our first meditation spot, we will begin to develop a relationship with the land through learning about the natural and cultural history of the area including the native and medicinal uses of the plants along the way. Once we reach our meditation spot, we begin with an arriving practice and nature meditations that awaken our sensory perceptions, tune us into the elements, and explore themes of gratitude and loving kindness. Then we will open up our bodies through gentle easy yoga and chi gong movements and mindful meandering. Cultivating a receptive, embodied quality of attention, states of joy, awe, wonder, and love become more accessible. Rejuvenate your body, mind & spirit. This is an unplugged event where we will have the spaciousness of both silence and connection time. We welcome people of all ages, races, gender identities, sexual orientations, and abilities to join us. We recognize that there is still work to be done to make our programming accessible to everyone, and we are committed to making progress in creating an inclusive and welcoming environment for all. Great for groups, teams, and team building. Alternate locations in the Bay Area can be arranged for private groups.

We will pay homage to the homes of the Grateful Dead, Janis Joplin, and Jimi Hendrix. We will talk about the Summer of Love and why thousands of young people flocked to San Francisco in the 60’s. After completing this walk, guests will have a familiarity with the Haight-Ashbury, its history and its architecture. Check this ‘must-see’ off your SF to-do list or confidently return and continue to explore on your own. We will literally get down to earth, get centered and throw some mud on the potter's wheel. Don't be afraid to get your hands dirty and explore the depth of your creative spirit. Our master potter will demonstrate the mesmerizing process of throwing a basic cylinder on the wheel. Then its your turn to get your hands into the clay and create your own masterpiece. Anything you want to keep will be trimmed, bisque fired, glazed and glaze fired by our master potter's and made available for you to pick up at a later date (3-6 weeks). After you have created your masterpieces, the last 15 minutes of class will be for clean-up. If you want to use all your time creating, for a small fee, the teacher will do the clean-up for you, just ask. *Please arrive 10 minutes early so we can start on time. Late arrivals disrupt the flow of the demonstration and won't give you the time you will want to create. *For a private group or team session at a date and time of your choice, please send me a message. Other things to note Children are welcome with an adult guarding registered and participating in the same class.
Eat the Mission!
All food is included! First, we'll meet in front of the Delfina Restaurant (est. 1998); their award-winning pizzeria is where our journey will begin. Our culinary experience will cover a total of FIVE local eateries, featuring eclectic dishes that'll certainly satisfy your appetite. Of course, it wouldn't be a Mission food tour without a traditional taqueria (est. 1987) experience! While we may not physically dine in each location (crowds & lines), a collection of their most famous dishes will be ordered & prepped in advance by yours truly. Skip the line and get straight to eating! We will close the tour on a sweet note, permitting you to sample some of the best ice cream in the country. Choose your favorite flavor for an indulgent dessert! A massive meal awaits - just bring your eating pants, comfy shoes, an open mind, and a ravenous appetite for adventure! Other things to note All tastings are included! Please bring comfortable walking shoes and layers for SF weather. Happy to provide special accommodations for vegetarians / people with food allergies, just let me know!

Your guide to San Francisco

What is the best food in San Francisco?

That’s a loaded question. San Francisco is a city that brings the world together through its food (and drinks), a mix of iconic and innovative. For a real taste of the Bay Area, here are some local neighborhoods (in San Francisco and beyond) that you can’t miss, no matter how many places are on your list.

The Richmond District

Some of the best dim sum in the city, among other eats, can be found in this neighborhood that runs adjacent to Golden Gate Park. This is a great alternative to San Francisco’s famous Chinatown for authentic eats, most notably on Clement Street.

The Mission District

For real-deal taquerias, it’s hard to beat the Mission for tacos, burritos, and other Mexican fare — the lines are there to prove it — but that’s only the beginning when it comes to Latin American cuisine. There is so much more to enjoy here in the form of Salvadorian restaurants, vegan empanadas, and Peruvian tapas, among others. Take food tours with locals to get the most out of the wide selection of the Mission’s delicious eats (think noodles, pizza, coffee, Michelin-rated pastries, and more).

Temescal (Oakland)

Head across the Bay Bridge to arrive in Temescal, one of Oakland’s oldest neighborhoods. This walkable stretch of Telegraph Avenue has long been a local darling for bistros, dive bars, and kid-friendly restaurants.

Where do locals hang out in San Francisco?

It’s not uncommon to start the day with a yoga on the beach, or a jog in the Golden Gate National Recreation Area — passing Fort Point, the Marina Green, Crissy Field, and Fort Mason — before hitting a brunch in the nearby Marina, or heading over to the Castro or Hayes Valley. By afternoon, people flock to restaurant parklets in neighborhoods like North Beach. However most locals would agree that the city’s green spaces, favorites include Dolores Park and the Presidio, are the place to meet up with friends and family for a low-key outing.

What are the best day trips from San Francisco?

The San Francisco Bay Area is a “choose your own adventure” place with natural beauty in the city and beyond: mountains, valleys, beaches, and lush parks are all reachable on day, and half-day, trips.

North Bay

The Napa and Sonoma wine regions are some of the best ways to explore outside of the city, and most people arrange wine tasting and transportation tours for a safe and enjoyable day out. For those looking for more of an outdoors vibe, the Marin Headlands are laced with beautiful hiking trails, many of which lead to Mount Tamalpais (better known as Mt. Tam). You can also head out in the early morning to Muir Woods to see some of the world’s most ancient redwoods. From there, take the scenic Highway 1 drive to find a sprinkling of beach towns with cafes, breweries, and bookstores in places such as Dillon Beach, Stinson Beach, and Point Reyes.

Bike rides over the Golden Gate Bridge drop you in Sausalito for galleries, restaurants, and more waterfront trails that extend to Mill Valley. For those who don’t feel like making the round trip on two wheels, opt for a quick ferry ride from Sausalito back to the Embarcadero. Another great ferry option: a short ride drops you at Angel Island for beautiful sweeping views of the bay and easy-to-moderate hikes. Just be sure to bring a picnic to Angel Island, food and drink options are limited.

East Bay

Just over the Bay Bridge, urban wineries, live music, and shopping can be found in Berkeley, Oakland, and Alameda. The first Sunday of each month, the Alameda Flea Market (the Alameda Point Antiques Faire) is a popular spot for locals to shop for a mix of vintage clothing, art, and furniture in a labyrinth of stalls, set against 360-degree backdrop of San Francisco’s skyline and the Port of Oakland’s cranes. For nightlife, First Fridays are a celebration of the Oakland arts, and the Fox Theatre in Uptown Oakland is a Bay Area favorite for music venues, with easy BART access back to the city.
