An Aussie sporting icon - catch a footy or cricket match if you can (tickets sell fast for big games, so book ahead). Tours run daily and give access to player rooms and the stadium’s inner workings, great even if there’s no event on. Wear comfy shoes, bring layers (it gets chilly/windy), and grab snacks before heading in - stadium food is pricey and queues long. Use Jolimont Station for the easiest walk back into the city post-game.

Ask any Victorian and they’ll be aware of the Melbourne Cricket Ground’s status as the home of sport. But it is also steeped in a rich history; established in 1853, less than 20 years after the founding of Melbourne, it is often described as the beating heart of this fantastic city. It has been the home of Australian football since 1859, and was the birthplace of Test cricket in 1877 and one-day international cricket in 1971. It was the main stadium for the 1956 Olympic Games and 2006 Commonwealth Games, attracts up to 100,000 fans to the annual AFL Grand Final and the ‘G comes to life each Christmas at the Boxing Day Test. Other sporting spectacles to have been held there include World Cup soccer qualifiers, rugby league home and away matches and State of Origin, international rugby union and Austral Wheel Races. But the ‘G, as it is affectionately known to locals, is so much more than Australia’s biggest sporting stadium. It has hosted Papal and Royal visits and housed US Marines, the US Army airforces and our own RAAF during World War II. It has also been a concert venue for international and local performers, held open days, charity events, dinners and many more. Nestled in Yarra Park, about a 10-minute walk from the heart of the city, the MCG is open every day of the year for events and functions and tourists and the general public alike can visit seven days a week. Guided tours are also available.

As much a culture and dining hub as it is a business district, the CBD has plenty of clubs, bars and chic eateries on its street art–plastered laneways. Shoppers throng the ornate 19th-century arcades and sprawling Queen Victoria Market, known for its gourmet food halls. Federation Square offers Australian art at the Ian Potter Centre, and art-house films and movies at the Australian Centre for the Moving Image. Venture further to Emporium for a high end shopping experience.

Pull up a riverside table at any of the excellent eateries that stretch from Southgate to Crown Entertainment Complex. Dine alfresco as the city lights up at night or just watch the bustle along the Yarra River. Venture out onto the river itself for a coffee, meal or sunset drink at Ponyfish Island, Arbory Afloat or Yarra Botanica. Step into the luxurious world of Crown and splurge at a super-chef's signature restaurant or at the international designer boutiques. Revert to childhood with mini golf, bowling and arcade games; catch a movie; or meet mates to say cheers in one of the many bars. Time an evening stroll with Crown's Gas Brigades to see enormous fireballs light up the night sky. For a dose of public art, track down Queen Bee, a colony of giant golden bees on Eureka Tower or The Travellers lining Sandridge pedestrian bridge over the Yarra River. Two-wheeling it? Southbank makes a perfect pit stop on the Capital City Trail.

St Kilda is a traveller's hot spot. You will notice plenty of tourists from all walks of life. Beautiful beachside suburb with plenty of Melbourne history, specifically in the architecture of the buildings in the hood. To spend a day here: 1. Stroll around Acland Street, one of the main shopping precincts of St Kilda. Here you will find the famous bakery windows full of delicious European delicacies. 2. Visit St Kilda Botanical Gardens 3. See fairy penguins at dusk on St Kilda Pier. 4. The beach may look very inviting. I would not recommend swimming in the water however, due to proximity to Melbourne's sea ports. However, to spend a day on the sands or greens is just as rewarding. 5. Have a game of lawn bowls at the St Kilda Bowling Club.

Fitzroy is melbournes first suburb & has long been associated with the working class. Fitzroy has undergone waves of urban renewal and gentrification since the 1980s and today is home to a wide variety of socio-economic groups. There are many small commercial art galleries, artist-run spaces and artist studios located within the suburb. Fitzroy has a thriving street art community and is also the home of Gertrude Contemporary Art Spaces and the Centre for Contemporary Photography. Today Fitzroy is a hub for live music in Melbourne, and plays host to prominent venues; The Old Bar, Bar Open, the Evelyn Hotel, Gertrudes Brown Couch, and Cape Live.
