This was my first guided tour on an overseas trip. Our guide, Shin, spoke both Japanese and English for our family and smoothly guided us through the Jigoku Onsen Pilgrimage, Kanawa Onsen Street, and the Medicinal Herb Steam Bath, and also booked a nice dinner and a massage for us. Shin was a great host who really tailors the experience based on your preferences. The tour was on the pricier side since not enough people signed up and it became a private tour, but Shin let me know beforehand so I knew what I was signing up for. We went to a few of the Beppu Hells, a local wagashi café, and a herbal steam bath. Shin also recommended an amazing massage therapist when I expressed interest, and it was probably one of the best massages I’ve ever received. I also had the opportunity to do a sound bath from him. I didn’t know what to expect since I’ve never done anything like it before, but it was a really relaxing time! If you’re the kind of person that enjoys calming activities like massages, yoga, or meditation, then I would recommend this experience. He was easy to contact, flexible with my schedule, and was kind enough to bring me to the station when I had to leave the sound bath early to catch my flight. Overall, a good experience.

We had such a special afternoon with Shin and his musician friend Tamami. They treated us to a private sound bath unlike anything we’ve experienced—rows of crystal singing bowls, handpan, bells, chimes, and other instruments blending into the most beautiful, meditative soundscape. My wife and I felt completely transported. Afterward, Shin showed us around Beppu, even leading us to a tiny restaurant tucked down an alley we never would’ve found ourselves. Instead of the crowded public baths, he arranged a private onsen for us—quiet, authentic, and deeply relaxing. Shin is wonderfully well-traveled and easy to talk to; spending time with him felt like reconnecting with an old friend. We couldn’t recommend him more highly.

Shin is such a kind soul and is very knowledgeable. I really enjoyed visiting Beppu and seeing all the different hot springs. We also visited a local Japanese restaurant that specialized in traditional sweets that was delicious! I was able to take so many beautiful pictures and would absolutely recommend this tour.
