Uluwatu Beach Perhaps the most legendary of Bali’s surf spots, Uluwatu Beach sits underneath the beautiful 11th century Pura Luhur Temple. The sandy stretch and its array of attributing bays essentially feature five amazing breaks in one — The Peak, Racetrack, Outside Corner, Temples and The Bombie. Depending on the time of day and swell, each of Uluwatu Beach’s peaks has its own unique features but requires an experienced surfer to fully enjoy their tidal power. To gain access from the car park, and the selection of cafes and facilities lie above, traverse down some stairs into a wondrous cave setting where you can swim straight out into the breaks. If you require more sand to leave your belongings or sunbathe, take a left and discover a bay with ample space to spectate the surfers from a distance. Uluwatu’s five main surf areas all break left down the reef, with various sections that change with the size of the swell. Temples is the least crowded section due to its distance from the shoreline, while The Bombie is responsible for some of the biggest waves ever ridden in Indonesia and is a must-see spectacle for any surfing enthusiast. The Peak is located directly in front of the cave and is, therefore, the most popular, so be prepared to be patient and allow for surfing etiquette. Outside Corner is perhaps the most iconic peak, but is really reserved for experienced surfers, while Racetrack is a fast and long ‘rippable’ section with makable barrels draining off the reef. Best at low tide, it is found to the right of the cave and angles towards Padang Padang Beach.

The cliff-fringed coastline is also home to hidden beaches and world-class surf breaks, a mecca for wave riders from the world over. Uluwatu and the Bukit should be top consideration if you’re looking for a stay in Bali that is away from the crowds common to Bali’s south, such as Kuta, Legian and Seminyak.

Thomas Beach is yet another dreamy Uluwatu beach, located just a short drive from Padang Padang Beach. Featuring a 200m stretch of soft white sand and crystal clear water, Thomas Beach is the perfect spot for swimming, baking in the sun, and beachcombing. If you’re into surfing, there are a few surf shacks on the beach where you can rent a surfboard or brush up on your surfing skills with a quick 1-hour lesson (300,00 IDR). When the swell is right, Pantai Beach is a great place to surf, particularly for beginners, since the waves never jack up quite as quickly as some other Uluwatu beaches. Several warungs line the beach, selling all your favorite local Bali dishes, cold Bintangs, and freshly cracked coconuts. Beach chairs and umbrellas are also available for rent. Getting to Thomas Beach requires quite some effort, however. Thankfully, this means it’s never too crowded and is a great spot to chill if you don’t like crowds. From the entrance (opposite Suka Espresso), it takes about 10 minutes to walk to the shoreline, but note that there are quite a few stairs to climb. While going downhill is pretty easy, expect to break a sweat coming back up! There is no entrance fee to Thomas Beach.

If you’re up for a little workout before your beach time, Green Bowl Beach is the challenge you’ll love. To reach the beach, you’ll need to walk down a long set of steep stairs—going down is quick, but coming back up will definitely get your heart pumping! Why visit Green Bowl: • A hidden, small cove with turquoise water and soft white sand, surrounded by cliffs. • Less crowded compared to other beaches because of the stair access—so you’ll often find it more peaceful. • Natural caves along the beach offer shady spots to rest between swims. • Also popular among surfers when the waves and tide are right. ⸻ Practical Info • Entrance Fee: Around IDR 10,000 per person (plus parking). • Best Time to Visit: Low tide—more sandy space and safer conditions for swimming. • Facilities: A few warungs at the top of the stairs, but limited options down on the beach. Bring your own supplies. • Swimming Note: The currents can be strong at high tide—better for surfers than casual swimmers. ⸻ Tips • The stairs are long—going down takes only a few minutes, but climbing back up can take 10–20 minutes depending on breaks. • Wear comfortable footwear for the steps. • Carry water and maybe a snack—you’ll want to recharge after the climb. • The effort pays off with peaceful vibes, crystal-clear water, and a secluded feel. ⸻ Green Bowl is not just a beach—it’s an adventure with a rewarding finish.

Green Bowl Beach is about a 20-minute scooter ride away, known for its clear water, limestone caves, and a quiet surf break. To reach the beach, visitors go down about 320 steps. It’s best to visit around mid-tide, as the beach can shrink at high tide. Be prepared for a climb back up and watch out for monkeys near the parking area. There aren’t facilities, so bring water and essentials with you.
