There are 15 important fossil sites within the Cradle, including the world-famous Sterkfontein Caves, site of the world’s oldest and most continuous palaeontological dig. In 1893 a high-security prison was built on the Braamfontein ridge in Johannesburg. A few years later, the building of a series of forts around it strengthened the establishment and gave it military capacity. That site became a landmark. It was known in some circles as the Johannesburg Fort and in others as Number Four, the name given to the frightening section in which black men were jailed. The complex housed three notorious prisons. Hundreds of thousands of people were jailed there - including famous figures such as Mahatma Gandhi and Albert Luthuli. Nelson Mandela paid the Fort a visit first as a young lawyer, then as a prisoner and finally as the president of South Africa. The prison was closed in 1983, leaving a scar on Johannesburg's metropolis - a bleak reminder of our painful past. It is unusual for a court to be built on the site of a prison, yet the Constitutional Court's judges deliberately chose the Old Fort - for the very reason of its history. This historically rich site - where densely populated and frenetic Hillbrow meets leafy and affluent Parktown and bureaucratic Braamfontein - is now Constitution Hill, the home of South Africa's highest court.

See authentic fossils and stone tools (that are an impressive one million years old) up close for evidence that The Cradle of Humankind World Heritage Site truly is where the modern human race began. The exhibit area covers an impressive 2 500 square metres and 3.5 million years. The self-guided tour (which can include a memorable underground boat ride) is interactive, inviting you to take your time and experience a prehistoric world at your fingertips. The Maropeng Visitor Centre tour can be coupled with a tour to the incredible Sterkfontein Caves, which is only a short drive away and is considered to be the richest hominid fossil site in the world. In fact, it is here where the world-famous Mrs Ples and Little Foot were found. The caves are deep, with exciting narrow passages and a ‘bottomless' lake. Travellers with claustrophobia or breathing problems are advised to give this part of the tour a skip. The Maropeng Visitor Centre is in the mountain ranges of the Magaliesberg and Witwatersberg, just an hour from Johannesburg and Pretoria. There are several restaurants here – one overlooking The Cradle of Mankind and one at the Sterkfontein Caves. Pensioners, students and school groups pay special rates, while little ones under four years can enter for free.

The South African National War Museum in Johannesburg was officially opened by Prime Minister Jan Smuts on 29 August 1947 to preserve the history of South Africa's involvement in the Second World War. In 1975, the museum was renamed the South African National Museum of Military History and its function changed to include all conflicts that South Africa has been involved in. The Museum is an impressive memorial to the past with its collection of World War 1 and 2 fighter planes - some the only remaining planes of their kind in the world - tanks used by the South African Defence Force in war in Angola, armaments, medals, military insignia and uniforms. The most important and most famous of these fossils are “Mrs Ples”, a 2.1-million-year-old Australopithecus skull, and “Little Foot”, an almost complete Australopithecus skeleton that is more than 3-million years old. Paths ramble across the hillsides with views of the city from various sides, mixing urban life with local vegetation. The Wilds provides a pristine natural environment, that is right on our doorstep. With running waterfalls and fountains, it provides a gentle respite from the nearby inner city suburbs. At the peak of The Wilds is a sundial that marks a wonderful city skyline view.
