With the train near Interlaken Ost station that goes up to Harder Kulm, you'll be on the mountain in just a few minutes. Here, you’ll be greeted with a spectacular view of Interlaken and the surrounding region. For the locals, Harder is considered their "home mountain." If you're up for a workout, you can hike steeply to the top in a solid hour.

The name Kulm (or Culm) is a German language toponym which is derived from the Latin culmen, meaning hill. At an altitude of 1,322 m, the Harder Kulm offers the best view of Interlaken, Eiger Mönch and Jungfrau as well as the Thun and Lake Brienz. The palatial restaurant and the Two Lakes Bridge viewing platform are an enticing place to spend time. The cable car, not far from the Interlaken Ost train station on the Harder, has been operational for more than 100 years. The Talstation building has remained without major alterations to the original design as it was in the early years after the turn of the century, and is one of Interlaken's listed buildings. For connoisseurs and those in search of a view, the Harder railway takes just ten minutes to reach the Interlaken Hausberg. The 1,449-metre mountain journey largely goes through the forest, surmounting 731 metres in altitude at an incline of 64%.

The views over Interlaken and both lakes from the Harder are spectacular. Beyond the bridge over the Aare River, next to the Harder Alpine Wildlife Park, the Harder-Kulm funicular climbs at a 64-degree gradient up the Harder to an altitude of 1,322 meters. From the Art Nouveau-style Panorama Restaurant at its top are magnificent views of the Jungfrau area, Interlaken, and the lakes. You can return along forest paths via the Hardermannli lookout pavilion at 1,116 meters and the Hohbühl pavilion, where there is a memorial to the composers Mendelssohn, Wagner, and Weber. Stop at the Harder Alpine Wildlife Park to see marmots and ibexes. The latter, once a common denizen of the Alps, had become extinct in Switzerland by the early 1900s. This park was created to re-introduce the ibex, and the breeding was so successful that within a few years they were able to begin reintroducing these beautiful creatures into the wild.

The St. Beatus Caves on Lake Thun near Interlaken is one of the most famous and popular destinations in Switzerland! On a well-built and illuminated path, explore roughly one kilometre of the Niederhorn massif. Discover stalactites and stalagmites that formed over millions of years and immerse yourself in this unparalleled natural underground world. There is a also a great restaurant. It is a truly remarkable place, still quite incredible that you go up to 1km into the actual mountain. My kids (10 and 14) absolutely loved it! Also, it is only a 20 minute drive from our chalet.

The immense caves of St Beatus – named after a semi-mythical 6th-century monk who followed a dragon into its underground lair – have artificially-lit walkways stretching for more than a kilometre beneath ground level. Interesting, unique & awesome activity on a rainy day . Access by boat & bus from Interlaken West or short drive on the scenic back road towards Thun.
