How does Airbnb handle security deposits?
Security deposits help cover accidents that occur during a reservation, like spilled wine on the rug, a broken window, or an unreturned key. Hosts must add a security deposit to their listing before a reservation is booked. Security deposits can't be handled off-site in cash, as off-site payments are a violation of our terms.
A host has 48 hours after the checkout date to make a claim on the security deposit. Security deposits used to be authorized on guest credit cards 24 hours before check-in and released 48 hours after checkout. To make sure guests have better access to their money when traveling, we no longer authorize security deposits.
After a reservation is made, you can verify the amount of the security deposit on your billing receipt. Security deposits are not included in the total cost of a listing, and we do not charge service fees on security deposits.
