Kenya withholding tax

To adhere with Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) regulations, hosting platforms like Airbnb are required to collect the personal identification number (PIN) from you and apply tax withholding.

Under this regime, Airbnb is required to withhold tax on host earnings at the following rates: 5% for Kenya residents and non-residents with a Kenyan PIN and 20% for all residents and non-residents without a Kenyan PIN, based on your gross earnings. Airbnb will withhold 20% income tax if you do not provide your PIN by January 1, 2026.

How does Airbnb determine if I am eligible for Kenyan withholding?

Any host with a listing in Kenya is subject to withholding. This applies to both resident and non-resident hosts.

How do I get a PIN from the Kenyan government?

If you don’t have a PIN, you can easily apply for one as a resident or non-resident. You can learn more information on how to apply for a PIN on the KRA’s website.

How do I validate my PIN?

You can reconfirm your valid PIN number number on the KRA’s website.

How do I add a PIN to my account?

You can add your PIN to your account in the “Add tax info” section.

What if I add an invalid PIN to my account?

If you add an invalid PIN, Airbnb may remove your PIN and begin charging 20% withholding on your income. You will need to add your valid PIN again to your account.
