Personal training-related services

If you’re providing a service on Airbnb, it’s important to be familiar with the laws and registration requirements that may apply to your service listing.*

It’s important to note that different countries, states, and cities have different licensing requirements and rules. It’s your responsibility as someone providing a service on Airbnb to make sure you comply with local laws and regulations.

Licenses and permits for personal training

In the United States, you generally don’t need a license or permit to provide fitness instruction to your guests.

If you want, you can get a training certification from a reputable, accredited fitness organization such as the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA), National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM), American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), or International Sports Sciences Association (ISSA). In all cases, you should have adequate insurance to cover you in case a guest is injured or there’s any property damage. Also consider completing an adult CPR course, like the one offered by the American Red Cross, in case there’s an emergency.

In other countries, offering personal training or fitness group activities in a public open space, such as boot camps, yoga, or pilates, may require a permit. These permits may restrict how you conduct your activities, such as limitations on the use of music, lighting, signage, and how many sessions you can offer, and they usually involve a fee. You may need to be accredited for certain activities to be eligible for a permit. In addition to any permits, make sure you have the applicable accreditation for your sport if you’re offering training or instructor services.

Additional things to think about when providing personal training

Your guest’s health and safety should always come first. How you handle your service and listing is up to you, but we encourage you to:

  • Spell out in your listing the fitness level required for guests to participate in your service;
  • Explain what guests should expect from your fitness activity, including the duration and intensity of any cardiovascular activity and types of strength-training;
  • Make sure that your guests participate in exercises that are appropriate for their level of fitness;
  • Consider starting your fitness activity at a slower pace to evaluate your guest’s fitness ability;
  • Take appropriate precautions with equipment, facilities, and environmental factors;
  • If you’re providing fitness services, such as personal training, consider becoming a registered or licensed exercise professional, if applicable;
  • If medical attention is needed, direct your guest to a hospital or reputable doctor. Do not provide physical therapy advice or attempt to make a medical diagnosis unless you’re qualified to do so; and
  • Keep your guest’s health information confidential.
