Set up and manage your listing’s connected smart lock

You’ve connected your smart lock to Airbnb—fantastic! Setting up a smart lock makes check-in smooth and secure for you and your guests.

Activating and managing smart lock codes

When are codes active?
Guest codes are automatically active during the guest’s entire stay. You can adjust your listing’s check-in or checkout times when setting up your smart lock. If a guest needs early check-in or late checkout, you can adjust their reservation and their code will update to match the new times.

When do codes expire?
By default, guest codes expire 30 minutes after checkout. You can change this window to anywhere from 15 minutes to 2 hours after your listing’s checkout time. This extra time isn't shown to guests, but it helps prevent them from being locked out if they're running late.

Adding a backup entry method

  • Add backup entry instructions, such as a lockbox with a key. These instructions are only shared with confirmed guests if there's a problem with the smart lock.
  • You’ll get a notification if a guest receives these backup instructions, so you can update or manage the information as needed.

Updating your check-in instructions

If you already used a smart lock for check-in:

  • Remove any old or unwanted codes from your smart lock app.
  • Update your checkout instructions to match the new process for generating and sharing codes.
  • Learn what happens to existing bookings when you connect your smart lock to Airbnb.

Update scheduled messages or quick replies to dynamically fill in door codes

  • Use the “entry code” details in scheduled messages or quick replies.
  • This automatically fills in each guest’s unique code, keeping the process easy and secure.

Checking your smart lock status

  • If your smart lock requires action, you’ll get an alert in your Today tab.
  • You can also check your smart lock’s status anytime under your listing: Arrival guide > Check-in method.
  • Guests can see the smart lock status in their reservation details.

Learn more about smart lock statuses, what they mean for you and your guests, and how you’ll be notified if the status of your smart lock changes.

Who can use smart lock integration?

There are two ways to connect smart locks to Airbnb:

1. Direct connection: If you're not using a Property Management System (PMS), you can connect a compatible smart lock directly to Airbnb. This feature is only available for listings located in the US and Canada. Find out if you're eligible to connect a smart lock to Airbnb.

2. PMS integration: If you manage your listings using a third-party Property Management System (PMS) that supports sharing smart lock codes, you can automate the check-in process through the integration between your PMS and Airbnb.

When using PMS integration:

  • Your PMS maintains ownership of smart lock management
  • Airbnb doesn't have access to your lock's real-time status (battery levels, connectivity alerts)
  • All code generation and management is handled by your PMS
  • Monitor your smart locks through your PMS to ensure they're functioning properly
