Photo matching

When you book a home, service, or experience—or when you become a host or co-host, you’ll need to complete identity verification. As part of that process, we may verify certain personal information, such as your legal name, address, phone number, or other contact details.

We may also ask for a photo of your government ID and, in some cases, a selfie to match against the photo of your government ID. Learn more about the identity verification process.

Government ID and selfies

When we verify your identity, we may ask you for a photo of your government ID and a selfie to help make sure it’s really you. While no process is perfect, photo matching aims to minimize fraudulent behavior, promote safety, and enable meaningful, real world interactions within our community.

No facial matching process is entirely accurate. The effectiveness of this process can vary based on factors such as the lighting, photo quality, or changes in appearance between pictures you provide. Some users may be able to choose to use facial recognition technology—also known as facial recognition—to complete face matching in the identity verification process.

This process may “match” photos that are not in fact of the same person, or fail to match photos that are of the same person. Fraudulent individuals may circumvent even the most sophisticated and diligent efforts to match photos submitted for comparison.

Alternative verification method

If you can’t provide a selfie that matches your government ID, you can contact us to arrange an alternative verification method. If you’re not able to be verified with this information, in limited circumstances, you may be eligible to provide other proof of who you are.

Note: When a user is identity verified, it means that they provided information we validated through our process. While this process helps safeguard our community, it does not guarantee that someone is who they claim to be. Always use your own best judgment, and follow our safety tips for guests and hosts.
