Safety rules for weapons and dangerous objects

We understand that some members of our community may own or travel with weapons or other potentially dangerous objects. To help promote the safety of our community, we require anyone possessing such items during an Airbnb reservation to comply with applicable laws, as well as our policies, which apply to:

  • Firearms
  • Ammunition
  • Other dangerous objects, including but not limited to knives, axes, bows and arrows, or fireworks
  • Self-defense devices, including but not limited to tasers, stun guns, mace, or pepper spray

Rules for firearms

Hosts and guests are not allowed to have firearms during an Airbnb reservation unless possession complies with applicable laws and the firearms are clearly disclosed and safely stored. For homes, firearms are only permitted if the above conditions are met and the listing accommodates only one booking at a time, for example an entire home booking or only one private room. Even if the above conditions are met, guests cannot bring a firearm to a listing if the host prohibits them.

Disclosure requirements

  • Hosts must disclose the presence of firearms on their listing page.
  • Guests must disclose firearms and obtain the host’s consent to have a firearm in advance of check-in, unless the host’s listing description clearly states that firearms are allowed.
  • If the required notice isn’t provided prior to check-in, and the host or guest prefers to cancel the reservation, Airbnb may allow hosts to cancel without fees or adverse consequences and guests to cancel for a refund.
  • Hosts and guests are also required to disclose the presence of non-functional firearms and replicas because these can easily be mistaken for functional weapons.

Safe storage requirements

  • Hosts are required to safely store firearms by keeping them unloaded in a locked storage container (like a gun safe) that is immovable and inaccessible.
  • Guests must either safely store firearms in a locked container or secure them through a device that makes them unusable (like a gun lock or cable lock).

Rules for ammunition and other dangerous objects

Our rules for ammunition and dangerous objects are similar to those for firearms and require compliance with applicable laws.

Disclosure requirements

  • Guests must disclose and obtain the host’s consent in advance of check-in if they plan to bring ammunition or a dangerous object to a listing. If a guest doesn’t provide a host with the required notice prior to check-in and the host prefers to cancel the reservation, Airbnb may allow the host to cancel the reservation without fees or adverse consequences.

Safe storage requirements

  • Hosts and guests are allowed to have ammunition and dangerous objects as long as they’re stored in a reasonably safe manner. For example, ammunition should be kept in a locked space or container, fireworks should be stored away from open flames in a space that is inaccessible to children, and an ax should be covered by an ax sheath or kept in a locked space.

Rules for self-defense devices

Hosts and guests are allowed to have self-defense devices at a listing as long as they’re kept in a reasonably safe manner.

  • For example, pepper spray is considered to be stored in a reasonably safe manner if it is in a closed bag and the device has a safety mechanism that reduces the risk of accidental discharge.

Enforcing this policy

If we determine that any community member violated these policies, we take appropriate action, including educating hosts and guests on our policies, issuing warnings, or removing the violating accounts. We also take action if a host or guest uses or threatens to use a weapon against someone else.
