What you'll do

Late afternoon bird watching is rich is this area. Depending on sunset, you´ll be picked at the office in the historic center Oaxaca city between 2:00 and 4:00 p.m. by a trusted taxi driver for a 30-minute trip east to Rancho Pitaya.
Mary Jane will meet you with a checklist of local birds and binoculars for the experience. On the observation porch as you begin spotting the birds that frequent the water tubs and hummingbird feeders. Learn about the native plants on the ranch.
Delight in resident species: Blue Grosbeak, Beryline and Dusky Hummingbirds, Vermillion Flycatcher, Great Kiskadee, and the elegant Bridled Sparrow are just a few. In fall and winter, add Painted Bunting and Ruby-throated Hummingbird to the colorful line-up of winter visitors.
Meander the small horse ranch while Mary Jane points out more species, including the woodpeckers nesting in old-growth cacti. Enjoy refreshments, and snacks on the shady terrace before setting off for the second part of the bird watching experience.
Take a short drive west to wild communal lands, traditional farmlands and the Rio Salado. This diverse terrain offers a new lineup of birds like: Crested Cara-Cara, Groove-billed Ani and Black-bellied Whistling Ducks are just a few.
For the last part of the experience, visit the largest tree on the planet and the birds it attracts.
Return to the city approx. 4 hours after pick-up.

I have spent the past twenty years exploring the great valley of Oaxaca leading horse riding tours in its fascinating nature abundant in agaves, cacti and sustainable farmlands. A deep interest in Oaxaca’s native plants naturally lead me to want to know more about the birds that live in this habitat. My expertise is focused on the birds found locally.
Five years ago I began seriously studying birds, their habitat and their behavior. This interest has lead me to complete the course “Think Like a Bird: Understanding Bird Behavior”, the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. In 2018, I spent a week learning more about the birds of Mexico with Steve Howell author of “The Birds of Mexico and Central America”.
Whether you are a novice at bird watching or just new to the birds of Oaxaca, I give precise information to spot then identify the species.

I enjoyed the birding experience. My favorite part is the hummingbirds because they are so magical. We didnt see a ton of birds because the weather was incredibly windy but I enjoyed just being outdoors and walking in nature and learning about the plants as well. I would definitely recommend as a day outside the city!

An amazing introduction to the variety and richness of the Oaxaca's valley surrounding the city in short afternoon that feels like entering a lovely time warp. Mary Jane is learned and kind, fun. Her skills of observation and depth of knowledge for her surroundings are immediately discernible, she is there for you, has a deep passion for the area, Mexico. Her ability to not only spot birds but with a few syllables direct you to them was amazing. We spotted 29 species, dozens in the same categories: vermillion flycatchers, kestrels, oh so many. We drove farm land roads. I learned about common village land off limits for farming and land designated for farming - ideal habitat for birds and a seemingly wonderful compromise to preserve land and allow for commercial growing. Her ranch is awesome, sitting in comfort on her verandas as the sun set over the mountains with that amazing evening light across the wide valley, hummingbirds at the feeders, bushes full of birds, a cold beer...highly recommend anything Mary Jane has to offer.

We thoroughly enjoyed our birding experience with Mary Jane. She was welcoming and knowledgeable. She welcomed us to her home. She served a beautiful breakfast with good coffee. We saw 29 different species. We were both novice birders. Mary Jane was patient and willing to show us and explain the birds and different environments they lived in.

A lovely experience. My main intention was to get out into nature, and this was fulfilled beautifully. Yes, we saw a couple of dozen or so of bird varieties, which was wonderful. Shrikes, kestrels, cattle egrets, woodpeckers, hummers, and much more! Mary Jane has many animals (horses, dogs) on her ranch, I loved seeing them. She fed me finger food (veggies, cookies) plus there was Mezcal to try. If your only goal is birding, I think this is a great venue, however from my perspective of wanting to get out of the city, this was perfect!

I highly recommend the bird watching experience with Mary Jane. She’s very good at spotting and identifying birds, and she knows which ones are only to be found in this area. She’s very determined to help you see all the birds to be found, and you will. And she provides a refreshing snack at her lovely ranch where you will be welcomed by her pack of delightful dogs. It’s a great way to get away from the crowds and into nature.

I went on this bird watching adventure with my best friend and my boyfriend. All three of us are relatively new to birding, but not complete novices. We've been doing it together on and off for less than a year. My boyfriend is Oaxacan, but isn’t very familiar yet with local birds because we’ve mostly gone birding in the Northeastern U.S. We saw so many birds with Mary Jane. She knew exactly where to take us to see a wide range of birds in a short period of time. She clearly knows her area and I appreciated the extra knowledge she had and shared about different habitats we visited and why different birds were there. She was patient and did a great job describing the birds she spotted and describing where to spot them too, in order to make sure that each of us saw each bird. I’ve had other birding guides who didn’t do that, so I really appreciated the care and patience she gave to each of us. She also helped my friend learn more about how to use and adjust her binoculars, knowledge I know she’ll take with her on future birding adventures. Speaking of binoculars, the binoculars provided for us to use were high quality, which really makes a difference. I’ve been birding on my own in Oaxaca since and I feel Mary Jane provided us a really solid base of knowledge about local birds to grow from. I’ve been able to readily identify birds based on the field marks she told us. On top of it all. The provided transportation was punctual and the snacks she provided were delicious. My only comment is that for three people this experience was quite pricey. I really hesitated before booking, and the price is the only thing that would stop me from sending everyone I know on this experience. I do think it’s probably worth it for the ease of the transportation, the high quality binoculars, and the experience and patience you get with Mary Jane.
