What you'll do

Our experience provides the best of its category -- best bicycles, guides, vehicles! We transport our guests and bikes in Mercedes Sprinters, and our guides ride with very small groups. We'll visit waterfalls you will not see on other tours. You'll immerse yourself in the temperate rainforest!

We tell the stories that need to re-awaken. Beyond the 180 years of pioneers and loggers, before the century-old highway, this was the land of people with a rich mythology. We remember the long history this place holds, and tell these stories as best we can.

After we fit you for bikes at our shop in SE Portland, we'll head out in one of our Mercedes Sprinters. The bike ride and hike both take place in the Columbia River Gorge, the waterfall-laden western end of an 80-mile (130-km) canyon. At a breathtaking vista overlooking the Gorge, we'll take photos, and hear the story of who was here before us. We'll also tell you how the waterfalls were created before getting on your bikes to ride.

Over the course of the tour, we'll ride over six miles (10 km), mostly gentle downhill on a historic highway frequented by cyclists, see four to six waterfalls, hike 2.5 miles (4km), visit one waterfall unique to our tour -- all within a 30-40 min drive of the city. The tour is about five hours; you'll remember it for years to come!

Last minute is ok! Contact us for bookings beyond the window.
Other things to note
The cycling is appropriate for infrequent cyclists, but is on a historic highway with some vehicles. We work to make the ride safe and pleasant for all abilities, but absolute beginners may not enjoy this experience. The hiking is relatively easy, but does include 600 ft elevation gain.

I'm Sarah Gilbert, co-founder of Around Portland Tours and together with partners & guides Edwin, Evan and Jeri will host the experiences. I'm a published writer of essays and professional storyteller, and each of the narratives around which our tours are based is a collaboration between us, writers and route designers, as a movable narrative, what we call place-based storytelling.

Between us, we have decades of experience guiding bicycling, hiking and scenic tours in the Columbia Gorge, as well as wilderness readiness training and education in the botany and geology of this place. We have taken the best parts of our 1000s of visits and applied it to what we do in this experience.

We will visit the highlights you cannot miss -- like Latourell Falls -- but we will also take you beyond.

Where you'll be

After fitting you for a bike that fits you at our inner SE Portland bike shop, 833 SE Main #120, we'll head out to the Columbia Gorge, riding on the Historic Columbia River Highway and then taking a break from biking to hike up to a magical upper waterfall not visited by other tours. This waterfall was described by native people as the cursed wife of Coyote, the Beaver princess; we'll tell her story before we get back on our bikes to ride more.

This was our first time booking an experience with Airbnb, and because everything went so great with Sarah, it encouraged us to book other experiences. We traveled to Portland just as all the leafs were changing colors (total fall vibes) so riding bikes watching the leafs fall was a wonderful time; feeling the wind as we rode down hill. We thought Sarah did a great job of making us feel comfortable!

My partner and I agree that we definitely would not have gone and seen all these waterfalls if it wasn't for this tour -- definitely worth booking with Sarah :) Even though it was a bit rainy, we got to see a lot of amazing waterfalls. Also, if you love dogs, their adorable and super friendly dog Bear optionally goes on the trip with us! The bike ride was 99% downhill, super easy and very beautiful.

My husband and I spent a wonderful Sunday morning with Sarah biking and hiking through the waterfalls along the gorge. It seemed like each waterfall was better than the last and the amount of physical exertion was just right in the middle of a weekend of exploring and eating a ton :)
