What you'll do

Join me, author Minda Powers-Douglas, on a walking tour of beautiful Chippiannock Cemetery, where you'll take in some history, learn about gravestone symbolism, and hear stories about the local heroes, villains, known and unknown.

As the author of "Images of America: Chippiannock Cemetery," I'll give you an insider's view of this Victorian-era cemetery, established in 1855.

You'll meet the fascinating "residents" including railway and lumber magnates, riverboat captains (one was friends with Mark Twain!), Civil War generals, U.S. Senators and members of Congress, gangsters on par with Al Capone, gangster-era newspaper editors (both honest and "yellow"), and our most darling of doomed children. There's also a boxer, a mustard-maker, and a madam.

Discover the many reasons why Chippiannock is listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1994.
Other things to note
At least two of the local cemeteries were built on hills. Be prepared to walk a lot. We will often be in direct sunlight. Plan accordingly.

I have given presentations and tours of this cemetery, other local and regional cemeteries, and beyond. I’m also the founder-editor of TheCemeteryClub.com (2003-present) and Epitaphs Magazine (2005-2008).

This is a great experience to not only learn about the history of the area, but to see the interesting designs/carvings of the stone markers/monuments in the cemetery. Minda is a great guide and the time flew by. There is a beautiful full sized stone carving of a women standing over one person's resting place that is true hidden gem (among many). If you are in the area, this is a fascinating experience not to be missed.
