What you'll do

Are you interested in learning about the legacy of our Africans ancestor in the Cuban Culture? Are you ready to witness its influence in the daily life of the Cuban people? Then this experience is a MUST for you!
First we will share a cup of coffee and get to know each other in our headquarters: Beyond Rots Store. From there we will travel to the town of Guanabacoa, the cradle of Afro-Cuban culture. Once there we´ll visit the local museum to learn about the history of the 3 main Afro-Cuban religions. Then we will walk through the streets of our town, having a firsthand contact with the Cuban life. Finally we will meet a “Babalawo”--the highest priest of Santeria. He will cleanse us at his altar and explain us about how he looks into people’s future and gives advice based on what he sees. Additionally, we will enjoy typical Afro-Cuban food and relax under the shadow of a sacred Ceiba tree listening to emblematic music played by some members of the community, while we taste a cup of Aguardiente, the beverage used in all Afro-Cuban religious practices. You will come as a guest but you will leave being part of the community. At the end we´ll go back to Beyond Roots store, the first and only Afro style shop in Cuba, having the opportunity to visit an space dedicated to highlight the Afro identity in the island.
Other things to note
You can stay for a reading with the babalawo and have the perfect opportunity to take a closer look in to your future. It has an additional cost.
The experience finish at Beyond Roots store in Old Havana, a place where you can find unique gifts to share with your relatives your afro cuban experience

Everything was perfect from the detailed explanations to the immersive and hands on experiences! The food was amazing and the drumming and dancing was life changing! Everyone was so friendly and welcoming and I learned so much and in such an authentic way. I highly recommend this experience!

What a great idea! This was such a great way to meet others on this trip and learn more about our shared cultures. I left feeling really “at home” having Ben able to participate fully and learn something new each step of the way. A wonderful experience!

This was a lovely, casual history lesson. I definitely learned a lot about the African influence in Cuba and it left me feeling empowered and enlightened. Our guide was very personable and friendly. The stroll through Guanabacoa was brief and I think I would have liked a little more time. Meeting the Babalawo was great and our "cleansing" felt sincere. Our hosts for lunch were gracious and very welcoming as were the people who performed for us. It really was a well planned, full itinerary that left me with a desire to learn more on my own.

I’m glad and grateful I had the opportunity to learn about the Afro-Cuban roots and religion. My tour guide was so sweet, friendly and knowledge. She has a passion for teaching and storytelling and was able to tell our group so many details about the culture. She always referenced Nigeria and our ancestors, which I appreciated. We finished the tour at Beyond Roots store in Old Havana, which is the first Afro-Cuban store!

Francys & José were amazing guides, who were welcoming, insightful and knowledgeable. It was intimate way to in learning about Afro-Cuban culture and three Afro-Cuban religions. The spiritual cleanse and the reading by a Babalawo is completely worth fully participating in! Anyone looking to learn about Afro-Cuban culture as well as gain more perspective on your life you should totally go for it! The spiritual dancing was a plus! You should definitely bring money to get some souvenirs from their store in Old Havana, it’s worth it!! Trust me!
