What you'll do
I'll meet you at the station (COLLE MATTIA) just 20 minutes by train from Termini, South east of Rome (near Frascati). Just 400 meters to stroll and you will already be in the vineyards -this has to be the easiest winery to reach from Rome! I am a certified Sommelier and I have been living is Rome's wine Country for over 25 years so I've got lots of stories to tell you about Romans, Popes as well as the actual wine making and grape growing - wine has been part of the culture and lifestyle for the past 2500 years around here! You'll be surrounded by vineyards with some wonderful views (on a clear day you can even see the sea!) We'll go down into the cellar caves for a guided tasting of 3 fine wines and you might even meet the Count. You won't be drinking on an empty tummy, we'll give you a tasting of the estate's Evoo on bread, and pizza too. You'll also get the chance to buy wines directly from the producer. And by the way, this is the only winery to have wine and grape based cosmetics. Morning train time is 10.14 from Rome Termini (train 7537 - or 21855 to Cassino), return train leaves Colle Mattia 12.20 for Rome. Afternoon train 14.05 (number 21907 to Frosinone) arrives 14.29.

I adore this area and its history! I love wine too, so I studied and qualified as a sommelier with the FIS organisation and now I love to teach others how to taste wine. I'm English, but I've lived here for 38 years and over the past 10 years I have persuaded many wineries to open their doors to visitors. If you visit I am sure you will realise why and also wonder how come you hadn't been to visit Rome's Wine Country before! And did you know that if the Castelli Romani hadn't existed, Rome would never have been founded? I'll tell you why when I see you!

Where you'll be
You'll be within the Rome municipality, though just a few kilometers from the town of Frascati, not far from the Tusculum hill archeological site. Other nearby towns are Colonna, Montecompatri and Monte Porzio. So bang smack in Rome's Wine Country, which produces great whites (Frascati DOCG) but also fine reds. The Estate was founded in 1734 and the wine cellar was originally an ancient Roman cistern, now below the fortified family mansion.
