A walk to the History of Cancun

Cancún, Mexico

Experience hosted by Ale Y Beto

90 mins
Up to 10 people
Hosted in English, Spanish

What you'll do

We will meet in Groud Zero, where the vestiges of the first street of Cancun are, in the back of the city hall. Here you will hear the brief history of the founding of Cancun that celebrates its 50th anniversary on April 20, 2020.
Then we will walk to see the first 15 houses, most of them now restaurants and shops. You will hear stories of how we used to live in those early years in the middle of the jungle and the sea. We will walk along Avenida Carlos J. Nader and many other fun stories will come as we walk through the oldest streets of Cancun. With luck, we can talk to the first people in the city as we walk to the City Hall and the first hotel in Cancun, built for workers.
Then we will have a unique gastronomic experience at the local "la flea" market, a place with three choices of tacos for breakfast. You choose to eat or just drink a soda. Here, there are quesadillas in one place, carnitas tacos in another, or tacos in stews if you want more options. Meet the local people and enjoy authentic Mexican food.
We ended this experience outside the office of Fonatur, the federal trust office in charge of the construction of Cancun since 1970 and now in charge of the maintenance of the hotel zone. More exciting stories will come to nurture your knowledge of Cancun, one of the most successful cities in the world.

I live in Cancun since 1977, when my father came to work for Fonatur, Mexico's federal office in charge of the construction of Cancun. We lived in one of the first 15 houses built on the first avenue of Cancun that bears the name of one of the first founders of the city Carlos J. Nader. Now I am 47 years old and I am very excited to share stories of my unique childhood. My family and I still live here and we have witnessed the success of Cancún and of course, we are part of it. Being of the first families, we had to create our own community and be the first to do many things to help build Cancun. I am currently a sales professional so I regularly talk to many people from all over the world. I'm also a traveler and host of Airbnb.

Everyone who visits Cancun needs to take this fun and informative tour. Beto was my guide. He is personable and shares the history with words and first-hand experiences while showing exactly where and when events happened. The tour was truly eye-opening and made me appreciate Cancun as never before. I came to see that Cancun is special because of Beto and other families like his who worked to make its beginning strong. The tour caused fond remembrances from a visit my Husband and I took here many years ago shortly after we were married and with special friends. It was interesting putting into context what was going on in the history of Cancun and not knowing it at the time. Many other wonderful thoughts come from this tour. You will not be disappointed!

This experience was nice and enlightening. It was interesting to get a history lesson about the area I was staying at. I thought it was really cool to be staying right in front of where the 1st 15 housesof Cancun was built. My host was very knowledgeable about the area.

Beto was awesome! He personally knows and has lived the history of Cancun. Great stories and details about the creation of the town and how it progressed throughout time to the present. Showed some good local taco places and gave recommendations about markets near by.

For those wanting to connect with Cancun a bit deeper, I recommend this trip. Why not know a bit more about city planning, and the changes this city has gone over time?! Amazing experience especially for solo travellers like myself
