What you'll do

Before our walk, we meet the donkeys and find out about their nature and special needs and features. You will learn how to approach, groom, feed, put on the halter and handle a donkey.
To start our trip we choose the appropriate donkey for each hiker. Getting ready for our trekking includes the preparation of our backpacks with all we need, such as cookies, coffee, water e.t.c. The distance we shall cover is about 3-6 kilometers depending on your courage and includes a 20-minute stop at the Bethlehem monastery, which is built on top of the ancient Sfitos town or at a very old small church of St.Nicolas. The surroundings are full of old olive trees and vineyards. During our trekking you will learn how to read and understand the donkey's behavior and how to lead and negotiate with your donkey. Walking by the side of the most patient and calm animal is a unique experience that you will remember forever. Your action doesn't stop here. When we arrive back to the stable, you can participate in feeding all donkeys, as well as the chickens and the ducks. As a reward for our effort we will enjoy a glass of Greek raki and traditional mezedes. Keep in mind that the start time of the experience is indicative and can be modified according to your wish. Because the experience usually takes more than 3 hours, please let us know if you have any commitment and should limit it to 3 hours.
Other things to note
While you can make your reservation at any time, we recommend that you choose dates that other guests have already booked. It's much more fun. It is a unique experience to see many donkeys walking in the countryside. It's also nice to make new acquaintances while traveling.

I left advertising/studio photography after 27 years in order to be near my lovely donkeys, take care of them and share my passion with everyone who wants to know this amazing animal. I trained and certified as a donkey keeper from the Donkey Sanctuary of Manchester. I love to live in the nature and - among others - organize trekking walks next to these amazing creatures. With our donkeys as hikers, we take long walks through paths, meadows and unfamiliar landscapes. This experience offers a bond of trust and friendship with this special animal.
I'm also the co-founder of the Hellenic Donkey Center -
Gaidourohora. We currently host 16 donkeys, ensuring a life with proper care, love & respect for their needs and take action for the recovery of those in need, advising and training owners and providing information, education, and treatment.

A wonderful and unique experience that you can’t find anywhere else in Athens! I would whole heartedly recommend doing this experience, it’s a fantastic, ‘off the beaten track’ day if you’re staying in Athens for a few days. And wonderful to be able to support the animal sanctuary and really get to know about the donkeys. Dimitris and his team were incredibly welcoming and kind, and they finished off the day with a traditional and local Greek dinner. Beautiful scenery, beautiful animals, fantastic food and fantastic people! 10/10!

My wife and I have done many excursions in our travels around the world and this had to be one of THE BEST! Dimitri is one of the most genuine, friendly and interesting people I've met and he immediately put us at ease and made us feel completely at home. When planning our trip to Athens we found this ABnB Experience and thought of it as a 'maybe let check it out' rather than a 'must do!' But it turned out to be one of the best things we did during our time in Greece. to start or experience Dimitris picked us up from the train station and drove us to the ranch which is a small stables set back against lovely mountains and rolling hills. I grew up in AZ in the US and it looked just like home! (minus the cacti). Right away Dimitris' passion for his work was apparent. During the ride from the station we learned a bit about the history of Donkeys and how they are different from Burros in the Southwest of the USA. This might seem kind of dull, but the way Dimitris explains things and tells stories (In VERY strong English) made it very interesting! when we arrived we were greeted warmly by the staff and given coffee. Then we met the donkeys! They are amazingly gentile and patient animals and we spent some time learning about the 'family' at the ranch and how the animals interact and are cared for. Then we were given the chance to harness our own donkey and brush them down to get ready for the trek. At first this might seem like a chore, but honestly it was such a necessary and intimate bonding moment which helped a ton when we went out for our walk. The trek itself was quite gentle and lovely, with lots of breaks to talk and take in the scenery. We stoped for coffee and a snack in a beautiful arroyo and truly felt a part of the land. It was a way to see and feel Greece in a whole different, non-touristy kind of way. After this we headed back and sat down to one of the most authentic home-cooked meals we have EVER had! We sat and broke break with our host and his partner Catirina to a smile vegetarian meal which was out of this world! Some of the best food we had the whole time we were in Athens and way better than anything you can get in the over-priced tourist places next to the Acropolis. Our meals was relax and we chatted with our hosts who our both warm, inviting, funny and very interesting! After that Dimitris drove us back to the station and bit us farewell. If you are on the fence about whether this is worth the time or the money, don't be! The compassion and care Dimitris shows for his Donkeys is matched by that he has for his guests. We felt like family and would have gladly paid double for this experience! Dimitris and his staff are perfect for couples, like my wife and I, but are more than set up to host families, kiddos and groups of all ages. There are so professional and passionate that you wont be able to leave without and smile... and becoming a bit of a donkey convert yourself. If you are looking for something beyond the same old tourist traps, something that makes you REALLY feel like a part of Greek culture, something truly unique and special then my friends, do yourself a favor and give this Experience a try. You won't regret it :)

Dimitris and the whole team at Donkeysland were an absolute delight. Everything from the pickup from Koropi station, through to the vegetarian evening tapas was lovely. My wife and I couldn't stop playing with the donkeys, the dogs, the goat, the sheep, the rabbit, the cats, the list is endless! The whole experience with presented with humour and a smile, and made for a truly memorable experience. Be prepared to lead the donkeys on a nice hike through the countryside with comfortable shoes and a strong arm to keep the donkeys from diverting you off path! Highly recommended! Thanks guys!

What a wonderful way to spend an afternoon outside of Athens! It was so relaxing to be around animals again and in the beautiful, rugged countryside. The donkeys each shined with their own personalities, and it was easy to see how much Dimitris and his team cared for them. Plus, the freshly prepared lunch was one of our best of the entire trip -- not least because of the friendly conversation! I highly recommend this experience for couples, families, or groups.
