What you'll do

Beautiful bikes, beautiful rides, and all our neighborhood secrets. On our tours we'll smell the roses, taste the doughnuts, ride across the bridges, and along the rivers; it's the best way to experience the diversity of culture, art, poetry, nature, parks and neighborhoods in Portland.

We believe it's all about the bike ride! Our approach is to spend more time riding, but lots of time stopping at gardens, art collectives, sculptures and beaches. We start in the inner Eastside neighborhoods, where we will fit you for an easy-to-ride bike and helmet, ready for a sweet 9-11 mile ride.

You'll visit a total of five of the city's quadrants, ride over two bridges, and along the Willamette River. We'll visit a number of almost-secret beaches, read poetry written in the sidewalks and rocks, see public art of every shape, color and texture. And have you tried some of the city's best doughnuts? (And no, we don't mean Voodoo.)

Portland is not just a city of seamless bicycle infrastructure and friendly relations between cyclists and motorists, but also a city of poets. Literally and figuratively, our bike ride is a poem--a series of poems--to our city. We'll read poetry written on murals, in sidewalks, and carved in rocks. There is, too, the whirling poetry of wheels on pavement, the sweet suspension of effort that is cycling on the quiet streets and pathways in this place we love.
Other things to note
Portland mornings are cool -- bring layers! We have raingear to borrow; or (Sept - June) bring your favorite rainjacket. We wear everyday clothes to ride our bikes, but it's easier in comfortable footwear, with no long skirts or wide legged pants. Minimal bike experience is ok; none, is not.

I'm a published writer of essays and professional storyteller, and the narratives around which our tours are based was a collaboration between us, writers and route designers, as a movable narrative, what we call place-based storytelling.

When we create a ride, it is one we as story creators develop out of the places we know intimately and love so well we are bursting to share them; and also includes elements that together make up not just the story of Portland, but also the beauty of biking in what one guest called "the most pleasant urban cycling experience" there is.

Where you'll be

We start at our shop at Around Portland Tours, 833 SE Main #120, and fit you for the bicycle & helmet perfect for you.

We head into a pretty residential neighborhood, to our favorite rose garden, into an art-heavy industrial district, across the sexy Tilikum Bridge, and onto Portland's waterfront. From there, it's a visit to Old Town/Chinatown, and along the river, before we head over another bridge back to our shop.

My child and I just had the best time on our bike tour with our guide Ana. Ana took us on such a great route with beautiful and informative stops. We got to ask all our questions, ride over bridges, stop to smell roses, and get delicious (vegan) donuts. We really feel like we got a great overview (and detailed) understanding of Portland. Highly recommend!

Amazing experience— my guide Ana was fabulous, answering all my questions, sharing personal stories about the city, and really educating me on the history of both the Portland and the state. I left feeling so jazzed and knowledgeable, like I really got a feel for Portland.

Do it!!! If you’re questioning whether you should do this or not the answer is 100% yes. The guides were knowledgeable, dynamic, and charismatic in a laid-back and approachable way. The places we visited were beautiful and the bikes were high quality and very easy to ride/switch gears and steer. I loved every part of the whole experience! I was born and raised in Portland and I still found out so many new things about the city! One fun thing for any future guests to know is that they’ll give you lots of insight into other things you can do in the city that even as a local I didn’t know about. I made notes and now have 4-6 new things I’m planning on doing around Portland thanks to them. Support this local business, it was a great value all things considered.

You don't want to miss this while visiting Portland! Anais took us to the best spots that we would have never found on our own. No guide book can offer the history and views that this bike trip will! Plus, amazing coffee and donuts on the way. Gentle enough bike ride for asthmatics :) this tour will completely make your trip to Portland!
