What you'll do

We’ll taste three rare teas (including charcoal roasted Oolongs and Pu'ers) aged up to 30 years old interspersed with casual and tea-related conversation.

I will cater my banter to all levels of tea experience and knowledge. My goal is to deepen the participant’s understanding and admiration for tea, by allowing plenty of opportunity to pick my brain with questions. Though I’ll provide a guided tea-tasting by going over tasting notes, and an introduction to the tea plant, Camellia sinensis, I aim to provide an informative, yet lighthearted tea experience.

The ambiance is just as important as the content: from handcrafted incense to beautiful tea ware, I strive to create a space where we can 'come to our senses' in the simple act of drinking tea.

I wear many hats: I’m a web developer, a juggler, a DJ, but as your host I am a Taiwanese and Chinese tea enthusiast. Once a year I embark on tea sourcing trips to Taiwan and China in order to build relationships with ecologically minded artisan tea farmers and to learn from tea professionals. I hold a BA in T’ai Chi and have always had a deep love of East Asian culture, philosophies, and aesthetics, which I integrate into my tea practice. The accumulation of these experiences led to the founding of Steady Hand Tea Company in addition to a Facebook group with over 6,000 people dedicated to learning about and building an international Chinese and Taiwanese Tea culture. Needless to say, my mission and joy is to connect with people over tea and to spread the infectious magic of this incredible plant and lifestyle.

Where you'll be

Our tea session will happen in my private plant filled tea studio tucked into the backyard of a beautiful old craftsman house on a quiet residential street. You may spot the chicken 'Benedict' in the backyard as well as the birds which frequent my porch.

I am fairly new to the tea world, but deeply interested in the subject. I had so many questions for Nicky and he answered every one while we sipped delicious teas from his vast collection. My friend, who has no real interest in tea, was with me, and she also enjoyed the experience, so I'd say this is good for both tea aficionados and folks just wanting to spend an afternoon in a lovely, relaxing setting. I'd love to do this again when I'm in the Portland area!

Nicky offers a PHENOMENAL insight into the world of tea. This experience is perfect for tea lovers and locals who are interested in trying something different. Nicky matches the level of insight you wish to acquaint yourself with and I wasn't disappointed at this man's passion for something the majority of people deem simple. The presentation, the conversation, and the knowledge exceed that of the experience price point. Please note that initially, his calendar wasn't available for the date I wanted, but after messaging the host he accommodated a spot for me accordingly. Don't be afraid to ask him if he has an available time slot for you!

It is rare to find someone as passionate about anything as Nicky is about tea. From its genetic background, history, production, cultural value, and so much more Nicky invites you into the best and most holistic conversation about tea that you've ever had. Although his knowledge of tea could probably fill a book or two, he never comes across as dry or too academic. In fact, he has a wealth of personal anecdotes that illuminate his journey from humble beginner to the Tea Yoda he is today. Oh yeah, and I did I mention the tea is delicious and of a uniformly high quality? If you have even a passing interest in tea, sign up for this and kiss your coffee drinking days goodbye.

Nicky introduced me to a quality of oolong and pu'er tea that blew my mind! I was so surprised that I booked another experience with Nicky so that I could try more of the other-worldly teas he has sourced. I tried an amazing rock oolong, 2x and 4x roasted Taiwanese oolongs, as well as an incredibly crisp, verdant aged pu'er. I'll definitely be going back asap!

What a fun friend date activity for us Portland locals! Nicky was gracious and open, providing tons of information about tea and tea rituals that I found fascinating. Yummy new teas, too!

This was a very engaging and educational experience. Nicky has tramped through the tea plantations of Taiwan, sampled teas from different farmers, learned the rituals, and learned how to share his knowledge with neophytes. We learned a lot. Highly recommended!
