What you'll do

You will be rebuilding a school in Sumba with the local community. Activity will depend on the progress of school rebuilding at the time (please inquire in advance), either at early or late construction stage.

At early construction stage, activities may include digging sand or concrete, transporting bricks or pans of cement, and flattening the ground surface. Hard labor is required at this stage.

At late construction stage, activities may include painting school classrooms, fences, as well as mural painting.

A typical schedule is as follows:
We will start hotel pick-up at 7-8am (depending on the number of participants of the day). Please have breakfast at your hotel. The trip to the school is about 30-60 minutes by car. We will brief you on the school and activity of the day before starting at 9am. The work will continue until lunchtime at around 12:30pm. You can take breaks in between. We encourage participants to eat together. We will continue the work after lunch and finish at around 3pm. You will then be dropped off at your hotel in Tambolaka.
Other things to note
School rebuilding stage and activities may differ. Please inquire in advance.

I'm the Community Development Manager at Happy Hearts Indonesia. For the past 2 years I've worked to identify existing schools in Sumba that need rebuilding. Those schools are typically in unsafe condition without proper facilities. Each school rebuilding takes about 8 weeks to complete. During this time, donors and volunteers are welcome to build the school with the local community. After construction, the school is then equipped with proper facilities, furniture, playground, educational materials and toys. I also manage training programs for the schools already rebuilt. Schoolchildren, teachers and administrators receive relevant training such as water, sanitation and hygiene and financial management.
