What you'll do

NYC community gardens are not the only things to bloom in the Spring. The streets awaken & heat up. Crazy colors, messages & meanings emerge. We'll see the latest walls by big international artists, & local artists of every type. It's all relevant. Urban history is sprinkled in to provide context and connect dots. Artists & gallery folks sometimes hop into the dialogue, as does a customized soundtrack!

Exploration begins at a local stronghold of the NY art world, born (like street art) in the early 1970s. After quick introductions, we'll hit the road. On bad-weather days we mine indoor sites like street-centric galleries. Nicer days typically cover more ground, and we weave about alleys & parks finding important (& sometimes just fun) art "in the wild." A dizzying array of graffiti bolsters street art stars like Shepard Fairey, Invader and Kobra (we'll see art by at least one of these stars along the route). Walks typically end in a quiet place- sometimes with a drink- to help process the visual overload. I'll pass out a map of recommended relevant spots in case you crave more, make sure you're comfy, & be on my way.

Other things to note
Wear comfortable, weather-appropriate attire. A water bottle and camera are recommended, as is some cash for snacks, drinks and shopping in this eclectic corner of NYC before or after the tour.

I'm an artist and walking guide that has been living in NYC for 15 years. After teaching at the Cleveland Museum of Art & graduate school, I moved and began work at the Brooklyn Museum. I've also worked at a Lower East Side art school and cathedral museum in Manhattan and historic house museum & an old Navy Yard in Brooklyn. I do art walks via @GothamSideWalks- my company of 1!

Where you'll be

There are nearly 200 art galleries on the Lower East Side, and we'll visit a few of the most relevant shows. Focus is on the legacy of art in the 'hood. Think CBGBs and the famed Downtown art scene of 60s and 70s, murals (legal and otherwise), art filled alleys and quirky artist-run spaces. It's a place where world class artists collaborate and decorate... and have been for decades. Special guests often pop up. Come see and hear for yourself!

Rich possesses all the talents of a great teacher. He was very knowledgeable, made the information relatable, answered all our questions, but most of all created a learning experience that was FUN. This street art tour is a fantastic way to see art in an intimate way and discover hidden spaces in the LES. We will recommend the experience to our friends and hopefully we will meet Rich again when we return to NYC.

I’ve been to NYC 5 times now and was looking for something different. Having an appreciation for street art and graffiti this looked really interesting and didn’t disappoint. I highly recommend it. You get to see and understand the history of graffiti in the city and Rich has some great stories to tell. Made me look differently at the streets when walking around after the tour. I could have easily spent another hour with Rich walking around.
