Meeting point is SEESTRASSE Station (bus, tram, underground) - right in the middle of Berlin's multi ethnic district WEDDING.
Introduction in the development of Berlin at the end of 19th century.
Africa in Berlin: We will start with an apero at an Afro-Shop. We will learn about people, products and the colonial past.
The unique assembly of architecture in the African Quarter will guide us through the early years of the 20th century.
In between a little excursion to a typical small garden/allotment compund.
World heritage side by side with controversial discussions: The present dispute about the colonial past will be explained as we see practical examples.
Cultural and culinary discovery: We will go patronize an african restaurant to experience people, music, drinks and dishes.

For more than 30 years I am living in the African Quarter of Berlin. One of the most interesting neighbourhoods in the city, yet not mentioned in any of the standard guide books. Since my early years, many Africans have moved into the already existing African Quarter of Berlin. Let us explore the infrastructure of the African migrants in the neighbourhood. At the African Quarter, one can learn how Berlin, Germany and Africa are connected through centuries. Big history in a fishbowl. For more than 30 years I am a frequent visitor to various African countries, to meet friends and family. For more than 4 years, I am offering tours through the neighbourhood.

If you are in Berlin and looking for an experience outside of the typical site seeing, I highly recommend this tour. Henning was super knowledgeable and all of his personal stories really tied everything in. He showed us all the hidden gems of the African Quarter and the history behind it all. My favorite part of the tour would have to be seeing all of the connections he has made and of course the delicious food. Definitely a one of a kind experience.

Even for someone like me, who has lived in the countries Henning talked about, it was an enlightening experience. The best part was being taken to Henning’s allotment and hearing about his personal experiences.
