What you'll do
Guests will be greeted at the gate and escorted to my test garden. Once at the garden, I will take the guests around to see all the different fruits and vegetables I am growing in water-conservative self-watering containers made from inexpensive and/or recycled materials, as well as my laying hens. I will explain how the self-watering containers are made, how they work to regulate water consumption by whatever is planted in them, and the benefits of having control of the soil quality on a container-by-container basis. I will also share other sustainability measures I've used to repurpose and reuse waste materials to grow food in the test garden, as well as provide the basics of backyard laying hen care. This is a look-and-see event with a Q&A session to follow. Snacks made from food I've grown may be included, depending on what is ready to pick in the garden.
I developed the Learn & Grow Educational Series in 2013 while pursuing my master's degree in educational psychology. I was assigned the task of creating an educational product in one of my courses and decided that I wouldn't do it for just a grade; I'd do it to make something real that actually made a difference. Learn & Grow has over 34K followers around the world online. It is used to address food shortages and hunger relief, as well as make home gardening accessible to renters and people without access to open ground for growing. I've become adept at growing my own food using our test garden and laying hens, marrying my food producing knowledge with best practices in teaching others. The instruction I provide online is great, but photos don't do justice to seeing my test garden up close.

Where you'll be
My test garden is currently located on the private property of a good friend of mine, so we have to keep the tours small and infrequent in order to keep the tour-related traffic through her neighborhood at an acceptable level. The test garden is located in a lovely, quiet corner of her estate behind tall fences and big gates in a rural area filled with beautiful homes, horses, and agriculture.
