What you'll do

Truly the ultimate Japanese experience involving nature, culture, historic buildings, a delicious Japanese 'kaiseki' course lunch, and a natural hot spring 'onsen' bath. We meet at Mikkaichicho Station, a 30-minute train ride from Nankai Namba Station in Osaka City. From there, we go by minivan to Mt Kongo, the highest mountain in Osaka Prefecture. It will be a great way to get out of the crowded city for a day and see some local spots. And I can take you to the trails only locals know.

We will enjoy the clean mountain air, fresh spring water, and nature. Try the local soy milk and see a traditional Japanese shrine and temple located on the top of the mountain. Mt Kongo is not only famous for its beauty but its ancient shrines and temples, castle ruins, battles, and historical figures.

After the hike, we will take a short drive to a famous local 'ryokan' inn with a hot spring 'onsen' bath located in a picturesque valley. The main building is a registered National Cultural asset. Here you will have a gourmet traditional Japanese 'kaiseki' course meal prepared with the finest seasonal and local ingredients in a private Japanese room. After lunch, a leisurely dip in the 'onsen' bath will leave you refreshed and invigorated.

This experience provides the best way to experience Japanese food and culture and will surely be one of the highlights of your trip.

I came to Osaka in 1998 intending to stay a few months before returning to Canada and a career in teaching, but enjoying Japan, I never left. I love Japanese food, culture, and nature. Yes, beautiful nature exists in Osaka. Come and join me and I will show you. I have been climbing Mt Kongo and the Kongo-Ikoma mountain range for the last 20 years. By living in Japan and with a master's degree in Japanese Studies, I can offer unique insights and share local knowledge with you about things sometimes easily missed.

Sincerely,
Tim

This experience has the best combination of nature, Japanese culture and a good workout! Tim is very knowledgeable around the forest and an excellent guide! We loved the onsen and Kaiseki treat after the hike. I would highly recommend this experience to my family and friends.

We had a great hike with Tim. The actual hike was rough (could be a bit rougher since I was carrying our 10 month old kid on my back) but we got through fine. Great views from the way and up top. There would have been easier routes but we were a fir party of five so Tim took us through a bit challenging scenic route. The kaiseki Lunch at the nearby Ryokan was top notch and the bath A welcome finish To the trip. The Ryokan has A fairly modest size Onsen so dont expect a Spa with multiple pools. The Ryokan itself is a real experience with being a real old time Japanese experience. Pricewise the trip was A bit so so, but I assume the Ryokan part takes up most of the money paid so. All and all I would recommend this trip for those wanting to experience something outside the city that really takes you To nature and old time Japan.

Tim has a great experience set up and I would 100% recommend. We messaged using the Airbnb app to personalize my hike, I wanted to go further. He made that possible. Traveling to the trail heads would have been difficult for me alone, don’t think I would have figured it out easily. Instead, Tim had everything planned and knew right where to go. That allowed me to relax, enjoy the trail and the sites. Tim explained the writing on the signs we passed and the history of the area very clearly. I liked learning about the temple and nearby structures, but all the writing was in Japanese. So without Tim there to translate, I wouldn’t have understood. As we hiked he made sure the pace was comfortable, offered snacks, and to take photos. The views were rewarding. Get some fresh air, do this hike!

Let me start off by stating that I’m not much of a hiker. Further, I’m quite a bit out of shape - but I’m on a path to shed some pounds and get in shape. I booked this tour knowing it was outside my comfort zone, but that’s exactly why I did it. In a word, it was awesome... and Tim is a fantastic host. Though he is Canadian, he has lived here for over 20 years and speaks fluent Japanese. This was great because I could ask so many questions, from etiquette to culture, and I was able to truly understand his answers. And the hike was fantastically beautiful, if not a little steep. If you’re in good to moderate shape, you’ll have no issues. Tim makes it look very easy and was so very gracious and patient with me. The kaiseki lunch and onsen bath afterwards were a real treat. It was an incredible experience from start to finish and one I would not have done without his guidance. I highly recommend Tim’s hike!

My sister and i had a great adventure. The walk was challenging but tim was so nice to adjust to our level . We really appreciated his going out of the way to make sure we were ok with it. I suggested to him to be more detailed in describing what to expect. Maybe he can indicate the different levels of the hike that he would want the client to experience. The very authentic local experience for lunch and onsen was a great way to end our activity. Tim is highly recommended. Thanks for the experience tim!!!
