Inside the Buffer Zone of Nicosia

Nicosia, Cyprus

Experience hosted by Eleni

What you'll do

This is not a regular city walk, but a passage through a town frozen in time. It will give you an insight into the current situation of the Buffer Zone “Green Line” off the beaten track, on streets that are hard to discover without the experience of a local guide. You will see the Venetian walls and how they form a boarder around the Old City, so unusual that once seen on a map will never be forgotten as a design synonymous with the unique shape of this ancient fortification.
On our walk we will explore the Southern side of the city and follow the infamous “Green line” that cuts through the centre, separating the city into southern and northern sections. This division has kept the two major communities, of Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots apart for more than four decades. Our journey begins at the Ledra Palace Hotel known in its era as the largest and most majestic hotels of the capital.
You will witness life having evolved along either side of this schism, something once impossible to do until recent agreements between the two sides to open border crossings. We will explore Ledra Street located at heart of the aforementioned walled city now once again rekindled to one of the most popular pedestrian commercial streets accented by abandoned buildings reclaimed by nature through decades of lost time scarred by bullet holes, military outposts and barricades.
Other things to note
Kindly note that our walk could last between 3.5-4 hours with our break, so make sure to wear comfortable shoes!

Group Tours are also offered with a slightly varied itinerary, tailored to your needs. Please ask for details and all arrangements can be made.

Life unfolds one step at a time, but at any given moment, we can change direction and walk a different path.

Greetings, my name is Eleni and I am an Outdoor Life Coach, walking group leader & guide.

I love nothing more than sharing the sights, sounds, and secrets of streets rarely discovered. I've been leading recreational walks for many years and I’ve always noticed how different I feel when I spend time outdoors: grounded, creative, and renewed.

I enjoy connecting and showing people around this great city and I feel the best way to connect is on foot!

The intention is to leave you with an insider’s perspective of Nicosia, the last divided Capital City in Europe.

Where you'll be

During the morning walk, we shall take a short break at a traditional Cypriot pastry and coffee shop serving locals for over 76 years, where you will delight in the melt-in-your-mouth pastries, of which their cheese and Cypriot traditional Croissant' are to die for!
If you choose to include the afternoon/evening walk we will visit a Kafeneio-bar situated right on the Buffer Zone and enjoy some local beer.

This was one of the best tours I've ever been on - Eleni is super knowledgeable, shared her family story with us, and spent the afternoon with our group showing us the history of the city – with churches, cafes, mosques, bakeries, parks and everything in between. We all felt like this tour was the highlight of our time in Nicosia, and Eleni was really flexible with adjusting the tour to our questions / interests so we really can't recommend this tour enough!

ELENI IS AMAZING. Not only did she do a wonderful job taking us through the history of the green line/buffer zone, she also is such a kind person to be around. We got to see certain areas and buildings and learn about what they used to be and what they are now post the divide. She also shared some touching personal anecdotes. Additionally, she is so friendly to everyone we came across (locals, UN people, etc). HIGHLY RECOMMEND.

Can’t recommend this experience highly enough. We had a great time and learned so much about the history of this beautiful place. Also, Eleni is truly one of the most genuinely kind people I’ve met - I can’t think of a better host!

So glad that we signed up for this tour. Eleni took us to corners of Nicosia we could never have found ourselves and had fascinating and personal insights you can’t find in a guide book. A great way to learn about Nicosia’s past and present. I just wish we’d done it earlier in our trip so we could follow up on all the local recommendations!
