What you'll do

This experience is created to introduce Ilkley and its historic surroundings to you just as locals know it. Foremost, I'll be like your local friend or family member to show you around, rather than a guide taking you from sight to sight. You'll learn about the heritage of this great town and surrounding area. You will discover historic landmarks and experience the fantastic landscape of Ilkley and the Wharfedale valley.

Having lived in and around the Wharfedale area for 37 years I have a wealth of walking experience and local history to share . I have completed a few of the popular Long Distance Walks including, The Dalesway,Coast To Coast ,Hadrien's Wall and The West Highland Way.
I am keen on local history and the historic sites. We have an abundance of Abbey's,Church's and historic sites all within the Ilkley area.

This is a fantastic experience of being up on top of Ilkley Moor but you do have to have the enthusiasm for a 40 minute steep hill climb as part of a walk that can last for around 3.5 to 4 hours. We were fortunate to have lovely sunshine but we could see that the paths would have been very muddy in poor weather. David is excellent company and has a wealth of knowledge about the moors and the surrounding area. Conversation was easy and he took us to several interesting features of the moor. We walked at a reasonable pace and, for me and my partner, it meant that we didn't need to have a map close at hand to make sure we were on the right track back. By the time we had finished walking, we were more than ready for our lunch! We would definitely do this again.

A great walk through the moors. David was knowledgable and pleasant, the walk lasted about 4 hours with some stops. We would recommend David and using guides in general as it allows you to enjoy your surroundings more, covering more ground and having that extra knowledge and history of the area.

This was a wonderful experience! Especially if you like the Brontes or have read English novels about the moors. It's a long day though...more than 3 1/2 to 4 hours, but it's totally worth it! A good tip...wear very comfortable hiking shoes and layers of clothes because the weather changes. Also expect to get a little muddy, so if walking isn't your thing, this may not be the trip for you. We walked about 5 miles but it was absolutely worth it! I would totally do this again! David was so kind and he even met us at the bus stop and helped us with our travel plans to meet up...even recommended great pubs afterwards. He is incredibly personal, and just a lovely person.

More tips

The walk will last approx 3 to 4 hrs. The first hour will be a steady incline on a good wide track to attain the elevation after which it is level or a decline for the return leg.

What to bring

Sturdy footwear( not white trainers ), waterproofs, hat etc. This is hillwalking. If it rains for the duration of the walk you will be wet and some of the tracks will be muddy, be prepared for this.

A snack and a drink. There will be an opportunity to visit a small cafe towards the end of the walk. Bring some cash incase the card machine is iffy.
