What you'll do

Beyond a tale of gunpowder, treason and plot, this tour tells the comprehensive story of Guy Fawkes, from his family history in York to growing up and the influences surrounding him as a Protestant and later a recusant Catholic.

Tour guide Vicki first became interested in Guy Fawkes in 2009, and her passion is one of the reasons that she moved to the city.

She interweaves her own personal journey of being diagnosed with stage 4b cancer, treatment, and remission, with the story of his life.

Where you'll be

This tour offers the complete story of one of York’s most famous characters, while also taking in beautiful buildings, including the church where Guy Fawkes and his sisters were christened, as well as some little known places within the city that even the locals are generally unaware of.

In addition to Guy Fawkes, the tour covers Kings Henry VIII, James I, and Charles I, William Etty RA, and St Margaret Clitherow.

It was a great tour and I liked Vicki’s story telling. You could see that her passion for the history on Guy Fawkes shine through. The research is also a great one.

Vicki's tour was unique and interesting. Focusing around the history of Guy Fawkes was a cool way to experience York and learn more about British history -- as Americans, we knew very little about the gunpowder rebellion etc! Vicki was willing to customize the tour to our knowledge base, and answer our questions that went off on a tangent. She was generous with her time and it was nice to hear a different voice than you usually get in media/tourism. Her sharing her personal experiences was an insight into contemporary York/UK that no other tour would have provided.

As Americans, our depth of Guy Fawkes was somewhat limited. Vickie shared details that we would never have known. Her depth of knowledge and inspiring side notes were such a bonus. The details were amazing. We met her promptly at the Exhibition Sq and we were on our way.

An amazing informative and completely unique perspective on the personal history of guy Fawkes and his life from childhood. Leading to how he came to be involved in the gunpowder plot. This was interweaved with her personal life experience which linked to her fascination of Guy Fawkes and Yorks history. So, much depth, which left you thinking that York and other places have so much untold history that it just wets your appetite for more. Wished I’d had cash on me to leave a tip as she far exceeded what we paid.
